    Thanks for your quick response.

When I click the link, my screen becomes blank and nothings happens. I'll try on another computer.

I've just noticed something, the 9700M GT is supposedly clocked at 625MHz, whereas on the 8930G (according to CPU-Z) it's clocked at 575MHz. What's up with that?

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-9700M-GT.9454.0.html <-- see

Edit: The shader speed on this laptop is also 100MHz slower than it should be. According to CPU-Z it's 1450MHz, but it should be at 1550MHz. o_O

But it would be ok to overclock it to the original specification? If that's what the card is meant to be running at, surely it wouldn't do any harm?

Edit, did it with nVidia's own performance tool, improved quite a bit might I add!

What nvidia MXM III cards have been tried on the 8930g other than the 9700m, 9650 gs etc?

I think someone should try an hp fx 2700m/9700m GTS card, cause they are only 100$ and much more powerful.

    NVIDIA DRIVERS 6.06

All I changed was the core clock to 625MHz and the shader clock to 1550MHz. I left the memory at 800MHz as that's the maximum. I'm not technically overclocking it, as this is the recommended clock speed. Acer are the ones for underclocking it. I think the reason for them doing so was to prevent the card from overheating, as it does tend to run pretty hot anyway. I've only noticed a 3 degree increase in temperature, however I can now run L4D2 maxed out 1920x1080, with around 25 - 30fps, before it was around 15fps.

It's worth noting that the temp increase is only when gaming, idle it stays the same. It's not a problem at all with a notebook cooler! I probably will need to clean my vents again soon too. (as I have 4 rats and a dog all in my room, as well as the wifey, so it gets dusty as hell in here)

    overclocking works great with it

Mine has just decided to have a mind of it`s own. I`t would be perfect if Acer eDataSecurity wouldn`t crash every time after i encrypt or decrypt a file.
The encryption/decryption works. But imediatly after i press Ok on the confirmation message the program crashes. Also ePower management never worked. I reinstalled both programs and nothing has changed. Any ideas?

    Tnx!

Cross-post from Acer 8930G VT enable success in windows!:

Another thing unrelated to the above content, I ran the PCMark benchmarking test (the free one), and got a stupidly low score of 4000 - is that normal? And also, why is it reporting Core clock at 169 MHz and Memory clock at 100 MHz when they are definitely NOT those numbers?

@Pantry: I had to create a Batch file because the overclock shortcut works by Command line parametres. Because I just ended up keeping nVidiaInspector in my downloads folder, this is what it looks like:

    START /DC:\Users\{Username}\Downloads\nvidiaInspector "Overclock" nvidiaInspector.exe -setGpuClock:0,3,575 -setShaderClock:0,3,1440 -

    setMemoryClock:0,3,920

I just added the .bat using msconfig, but I think Shaken's method might work better.

Still waiting on a reply about the BIOS.

I tried the Paragon, and it didn't seem to work quite right.
So I did a clean install. Glad I did.
Anybody wondering if an SSD upgrade is worthwhile, I highly recommend it :)

Hi I'm wondering if anyone can help me?

i have an Acer Aspire 8930G 584G32Bn and am wanting to upgrade my processor
could anyone guide me as to what the best processor would be?
I believe the best processor is the x9100 or the T9900 (dont know if the quads would fit and doubt the new 'i' processors would fit the motherboard)

    here are my specifications:

    Windows 7 64bit
    Acer Aspire 8930G 584G32Bn
    T5800 2.0 ghz core 2 duo
    4gb ddr3 ram

    320gb hdd
    512 mb geforce 9600M GS

Thanks... any help would be greatly appreciated

(btw i use my laptop for photoshop, gaming, web development and various other tasks, and the laptop is mainly used as a desktop replacement so is always plugged in)

X9100 is your best bet. Most people would recommend E0 stepping, although I got lucky with my C0, as it's overclocked to 3.3GHz, undervolted 1.175v and idles at ~25 degrees c. \o/

If you like gaming on it too, try upgrading your 9600M GS to the 9700M GT, (or overclock it, iono)

I have had one of these for close on a couple of years now, and although I do not play Blu Ray very often, in the last few days a problem has developed.

When I insert a Blu Ray, the drive goes through the motions of starting to read it, but eventually gives up. When I check the drive in Explorer it says no disc in drive, and if I try to access it with any software (Totalmedia 3 etc) the same response - no disc.

The problem started a week or so ago, with a rented blu ray - I thought the disc may be the problem as it took about 6 attempts at inserting it before it read - but it did eventually read.

However a second rented disc tried this morning will not read at all (have removed and inserted it about a dozen times). So I inserted a copy of a Blu Ray I own - which always read before - and this will no longer read.

I have gone through a re-boot a couple of times, cleaned the discs etc - but still no joy.

Anyone any thoughts - is this a case of a hardware problem having developed?

PS. DVD still read OK - no problems with them or CD's

I have a problem with the blu ray disks too, mainly the regions. I've got a few region free blu ray disks, and a few region 2 blu ray disks. If I want to watch one or the other I have to change what region the blu ray player is, and I've only got 3 switches left. What's up with that?

My problem is more serious than that - the discs are not even recognised by the drive.

In your situation, as long as you own the discs, you can use BluRay ripping software to rip the disc to your hard drive as an ISO - removing the region code as you do it.

Once ripped when you want to play a movie, use virtual drive software to mount the ISO as a 'Virtual' drive. It then plays as it would from the actual drive without having to change the region each time.

I could do that, but it's a bit of a faff and it's not ideal. Plus Blu Ray files are frigging huge.

I appreciate that - takes about 1.5 hrs to rip a BD to ISO.
Depends on how often you want to watch them as to how much it is worth doing. ;)

Look for HD Audio manager either in Notification Tray or Start Menu or Control Panel. You should see the options for sound effects etc.

Acer Aspire 8930G will not boot. All lights appear to function as if all is OK but the screen is completely black. Specs: Windows Vista, 4GB ram, 500GB HD, 9700M GT graphics card. Suspect motherboard but read other posts that the graphics card could be bad. Is it possible to bypass laptop screen and connect directly to monitor? Tried this by removing graphics card and connecting monitor to HDMI connector - but no change (black screen on monitor). Other attempts to fix - removed ram one at a time then both, moved hard drive to other slot, and did a hard power reset. Any helpful ideas??

I have also a 8930G and upgraded the standard 320 GB HD, to Seagate Momentus XT ST95005620AS (Hybrid), 500GB SATA-300, 32MB, 7200rpm with 4GB SLC NAND solid state memory. It rocks for me. Starting up is faster, most used programs are starting faster by the NAND memory. I need much space in my 8930 and hace also a Samsung Spinpoint MT2 1TB in the second bay.
Now i want to upgarde the T6600 proc to a faster one.

thats because acer also say 4gb max for the 8930g
but the pm45 chipset can use a max of 8gb

in another tread someone added 8gb to his 8930g but windows only see 6gb
so thats why i only got one 4gb stick

also dont go to crucial for the ram it costs to much
if your in the uk get it from here
    Kikatek.com | (CM3X4GSD1066) Corsair 4GB DDR3 1066MHz PC3-8500 SODIMM Memory Module
    cost £32.39 with free P+P

can someone direct me to a thead about replacing the acer aspire 8930g lcd 18.4 in. screen thanks in advance this is top priority for me my screen got shattered when it fell off desk!

Since, there are way better antivirus programs out ther then what is preloaded on the 8930g I say yes.I did and went with Norton antivirus 2009 gaming edition for its small footprint,McAfee is junk imo.But ultimately the choice is yours! :D

Hey guys, I've had my 8930 for almost 2 years, and I love it. It's this exact one:
    Newegg.com - Acer Aspire AS8930-6386 NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T9400(2.53GHz) 18.4" Wide XGA+ 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 320GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT

I had an issue with the media touch pad before, but taking the battery out fixed it. My NIC drivers went corrupt twice for unknown reasons, but reinstalling them fixed the problem. Other than that (and the minor throttling issue that this thread helped me fix), this thing has been great! And better audio than any other laptop I've heard!

I've read through this thread and am interested in installing an SSD to boot from and then getting Win 7 64 for it.

    I have a few questions:

Which SSD should I get? I'm leaning towards G.Skill.

Should I move the old drive to the second bay and install the SSD in the first?

Is the FSB speed maxed at 1066? I would like to get faster RAM. I read also about someone putting in a 4gb chip, but I don't think 6gb would improve speed or performance.

Is it possible to put a quad core processor in here?

yes ram is stuck at 1066 max because of the pm45 chipset
if you running 64bit any ram added will help

I went with an 80 gb Intel ssd. Very happy with it.
Yes . I moved the old HDD to the second bay for storage.

I should get a SATA II drive correct? But would it be ok if I got a SATA 3? Looking at this:
Newegg.com - Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC064MAG-1G1 2.5" 64GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Here's another quick question- Can I run 2 external monitors and keep the default monitor on? Like run one from VGA and one from HDMI? For a total of 3 displays?

Very interested in upgrading my RAM... Thought it was impossible. Still it's a shame you can't get the full 8GB.

Hi, a sata3 drive will not run any faster than a sata2 one on your laptop, I don't think your idea with the 3 monitors will work, however I could be wrong. If all you want is the same picture on three displays then a HDMI splitter would work.

I was able to install 1 4GB RAM module. But when I try to install the second one, my notebook didn't boot up. So, now, I have 6 GB of RAM and the notebook works ok.
