Hello guys, I fixed my 8930g!! It was a dodgy cmos.
However, a new problem has arisen. On my screen, black colours have turned blue. I have tested it on a 32" HD telly using a hdmi cable, and the colours are fine.
Is this a problem with my screen or is it a problem with the cable? It happened whilst playing a game, the whole picture on the screen went a tinted blue colour, with normal colour flickering in parts of the screen, then it went completely. Booting in safe mode gives the same results. I'll try rolling back drivers, however seeing as it's fine on a different monitor, I'm not sure if it'll do much good.

i believe 6GB is the most, although i remember reading that sometimes it works good all the time and for some people they have a few niggly problems, although i dont think they are serious problems

kAKty:
Thank you thank you thank you!
This card had been collecting dust for 2 weeks and I was merely procrastinating on sending it back under suspicion that I'd just gotten a bunk card.
Your suggestion was exactly the solution I needed and the card is now working "a beaut".
I can now play the Witcher 2 on my 8930 the way it's meant to play. Oh, and of course, all kinds of advanced OpenGL applications...
I might look into flashing the 260 bios that's floating around these boards here once I'm reasonably convinced that there won't be too many complications that can arise as a result of doing so.
I can recommend this upgrade to anyone, though 3 or 4 year old Quadro cards still do not come cheap. -
-
What models of QUadro are working with 8930G ??? i would love to buy one.
-
-
My 9700m just went up in smoke, have no idea why, anybody have any recommendations? Where can I get a new one?
-
They are very expensive and this laptop its waste of money. You can buy second hand 8930g for 300 euros and the card it self has 300~400 euros so . guess what u can do.
Or else u can try ebay and if u are lucky the card works. -
-
The best choise is what u said, try to sell the cpu , monitor , ram, mainboard and take 300 euros minimum of these. add some 200 euros more and buy new one.
The 8930g its to old to give anything more 100 euro is max if u can find a gpu for max 100 euro its ok do it . -
-
Is this what I need? theres no picture so I cant tell, I have that part number on my card (VG.9EG06.001), but that seems too cheap -
I was actually coming here for a similar reason, though I was coming to ask if anyone has a 9600M/9700M that they're simply not using anymore that they'd be willing to sell for a fair price. I have suspicions that mine is starting to bite the dust... Not shelling out $400 for one, I could buy a new (albeit crappy) computer for that much. -
Please could someone tell me what SATA connection the harddrive uses in the 8930G?
I'm looking to replace the Harddrive that came with it with a new SSD, but i dont want to bother getting the latest ones with the fastest read/write speeds if the SATA connection in the laptop cannot handle it..
many thanks -
The connection is SATA II.
-
Well it's been a while since I've been here.. haven't booted my baby for over 1year or so, today I did and it still runs smooth but since selling this thing in the Netherlands might give me a more solid price then what the user a few post back say they're worth .. is it really that bad??? I mean I bought it for 730euro 2the 2 new HD's costed 90x2 extra so around 900total.. what should this be worth? if it's any lower than 500-600!!! I'll be keeping it until the humidity in the air rust and oxidize my connectors
heheh

Hi all, been trawling this huge thread looking for an answer but can't find one specific to my Laptop.
I'd like to know what's the best CPU I can upgrade too, I think it should be the T9900 or X9100. I currently have a T5800 fitted
I have an Acer 8930 (Not 8930G) Model LE2
running:
InsydeH2O Bios Version 1.20
Mainboard PSMBOU-1234567 PM45 Chipset ICH9-M southbridge
Any help appreciated. Just want to squeeze all I can out of teh laptp ready for the release of The Old Republic...cost of new laptop is out of the question but can spare £150 for CPU if possible.
Assuming the better CPU will run hotter, is there any fan upgrade that will fit in the laptop with the new CPU that I should consider.
have seen some talk of under-volting the CPU to keep cooler...as a complete noob how would I go about doing this? -
Hiya, a few questions, similar to those asked by Aginoth.
I have an 8930g, with the PSMBOU-1234567 Mobo, which means it's Quadcore compatible, right? (I swear I read that somewhere in this giant thread!) If it can take the Q9000, it should be able to house the QX9300 as they have the same chipset/socket etc. Has anyone done this? If so, let me know how it went!
What I want to ask is: Where do I find a Bios that will accept either the QX9300 or the X9100 and allow overclocking/undervolting?
Thanks in advance.
Also: Aginoth, I too have pre-order SWOTOR! -

If it can take a quad, it's q9000 only. Other ones wont boot.
-
I own an 8930g. bios 2. I was wondering, firstly where I can get bios 2.1 (without all the spam etc) and secondly What is the maximum ram i can install ( currently 4g ddr3 8500)

the link is in post 2016
from what ive read the max RAM you can put in is 6GB , a few have tried 8GB but it doesnt boot -
Thanks,

Can anyone tell me whether my dvd burner in my 8930 is a dual layer burner? My 8930 g has a hl-dt-st bddvdrw ct10n. I was also thinking of upgrading my harddrive to a 7200 rpm would I notice the difference?
-
It has to be DL burner- everything since circa 2005 is.
As for 7200rpm you would notice it- linear read speed is roughly +50% compared to a typical 5400rpm drive. -
Hi
I have a 8930g 864G32Bn, with a Dual Core P8600 and 4GB RAM. Can I install 2x4GB 1333Mhz modules to use with a 64-bit OS?
Also, can I upgrade the processor to a quad core? I haven't been able to find a real answer to this. -
-
Thank for the quick reply I am also trying to figure out how to speed my 8930 up any tips? I have been playing starcraft 2 on it and for the most part it works fine but when it gets bogged down with processing heavy graphics it lags alot. Would adding ram help I guess we can't replace graphics card. Any tips would be appreciated.
-
@Ziggy: Only what's on the 5400 hard drive would be affected by the lower speed on that drive. Also, overclock your card/lower the graphics settings. I can comfortably play SC2 with little to no lag on recommended settings.
Also, because my fan is starting to crap out (ticks around like a dying motor), I need some help replacing it. One of the screws simply won't come out - tips? -
It seems to me that someone either told me or i read it somewhere that if you install 2 different harddrives on the same computer that operate at different speeds that they will both operate at the speed of the slowest harddrive. Am I wrong?
-
Stavrakis - no you cant put 2x4gb modules in it , the most its been shown to work with is 6GB of RAM..doesnt boot with 8GB , the ability to fit a quad core depends on the motherboard, only a specific motherboard number can take a quad core, i cant remember what the number is but it is in this here http://forum.notebookreview.com/5849877-post9.html
and this info might help as
well http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/337227-acer-aspire-8930g-owners-lounge-166.html#post6395241
you can change the graphics card in it as well, but it is usually very costly to get a card , and it has to be of the same form factor as the card that is in it already, there is a thread in these forums which lists the cards available that you can use, ive shown the link here
http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/396320-acer-mxm-models-cards.html
i dont believe that is correct ziggy, if you fitted a 7200 in conjunction with the 5400 already in the laptop, they would operate as 2 seperate drives and hence the 2 different speeds.....i believe it may be different in a desktop system if the 2drives were connected via the same IDE cable and would run at the speed of the slowest drive on the cable but i may be wrong on that hehe -
Hi all. I've just used CPU-Z to check mobo and it states 8930. My Acer was sold as 8930G and the bar code on the back says 8930G. Can I upgrade RAM from 4 to 6gb or not?
-
Hello everyone, after reading a lot of posts and solutions, I hoped you could help me with a problem I have.
After having my Acer aspire 8930 for 2 years now, and already having solved most of the problems it gave me, I am now unable to solve the following problem.
When I started up my laptop recently, my screen did not show me anything but a completely white screen. After about 2 seconds, a fully green screen appears, followed by a red, blue, grey, and finally two black to white gradients.
This procedure kept repeating itself endlessly, no matter how often I rebooted. (also tried removing both the battery and powercable to reset it).
I do have a normal screen display on an external monitor, but the laptop keeps on showing the coloured screens meanwhile.
After a while the laptop screen just worked fine again, but the problem reappeared after a week, and now it just happens sometimes after I wake up or reboot my laptop.
Some people told me this is probably my graphics card having trouble, but the screen is perfectly fine when the problem does not occur, so I'm guessing it's the cable going from the card to my screen. Turning my screen back and forth doesn't have influence.
So, what to do now? replace the graphics card? or is it just it's cable?
Thanks in advance! -
Hello everyone,
This is my first post here, but I think you guys can give me great advice.
I bought my Acer Aspire 8930G in january 2009, so now it is a bit over 2,5 years old. It's the version with a Intel T5800 CPU, GF 9600M GS GPU, 4GB RAM and a hard disk of 320GB.
I'm wondering if it is still worthwile to make an upgrade to this laptop. Are the chances that my motherboard will die on me in the next 2 or 2 years big, or is it worth the gamble to make some serious upgrades?
The upgrades I have in mind are:
1) Extra hard disk, I have one free slot: Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB 7200 rpm 32 mb 2,5 inch (all the way SSD is to costly...) (120 euro's)
2) New CPU (T9600, X9100 or T9900, I'm not sure what's the best choice, even after reading allot of posts on this forum) (from 100 too 180 euro's)
3) New GPU (NVidea GF 9650M GT) (150 euro's)
4) RAM upgrade to 6 GB (since i've read here that the BIOS doesn't support 8 GB) (25 euro's)
All together this is allot of money, so I'm not sure if it is worthwile to do these investments, maybe I should just wait till the laptop dies on me and buy a new one then.
What are your toughts about this?
Thak you in advance,
Yarnev -

2) the 9700M is actually quite crappy. You have an MXM III heatsink, upgrading to a 9800M GS or the quadro equivalent FX 3600M is a good idea! Could try a better card - 9800M GT or even FX3700m but they will run hot.
-
An extra question (the one I posted a couple post higher still stands...): in the 5th picture, there is something I also noticed in my laptop. Left on top of the left HD-slot is a place with 2 connections, but only the highest slot has a thingy attached to it. What is this thingy? And whats the purpose of the free slot?
Greetz,
Yarnev -
It's an extra mini-PCI Express slot. You can use quite a few things there- 3G modem, TV Tuner or even a small SSD.
It's a bit more complicated than just fitting a card there though (i.e. for a TV tuner you need an antenna connector) but that gives you some options to play with.
EDIT: DOWNLOAD types faster than downloads -
Yes that is a dummy cover for the antenna connector.
Here's a photo of 8930G with the connector in place.
Mind you it's not a mod- that one is from an actual review made by a Czech website. -
-
his name on Ebay is listed in this very large thread somewhere lol you will have to look lol -
It was meant to be used for a TV tuner as this notebook had a configuration that had it on-board but it will work with any mini-PCI Express.
-
Shakennstirred, can you please upload modded bios with unlocked menu made by TTAV134 ?

Right Guys, see if someone can do better than Acer's support team. The specs of my 8930g are :-
C2D P7350 2.0GHz 1066MHz
GeForce 9600M G
4GB DDR3
The problem is, I wiped the hdd from Vista x64 and installed Windows 7 x64 I have Nvidias latest drivers but I cant get 1080p resolution. Does anyone know how to sort this? -
Can someone tell me if there is a monitor driver, because mine just gives me a standard display? If so can someone post it for me? -
i think i remember reading something about it depending on what type of screen is in the laptop, a WXG vs a WUXG...1 is 1080p resolutions and the other isnt...i know my laptop has 1 of the screens that hasnt got the 1080p resolutions, i think mines is the WUXG....
-
it clearly states 1080p, also has blu-ray player. I am trying to find out if there is a driver for the CineCrystal displayer.
