so is there a driver for the monitor in the device manager. Surely the nvidia drivers should have sorted this for me, so I wonder why it hasn't, I tried to install Vista as there are more vista drivers available for this laptop than there are in Windows 7.

    1920x1080 = 1080p = UXGA (WUXGA = 1920x1200)
    1600x900 = 900p

You don't need one, it just uses the inbuilt one.

You can replace it with a fullHD one if you wanted.

Hello guys i am new to this amazing community and i would be please if you can help me with some issues.

So well i bought this amazing thing about 2 years ago. Now with so many great games for PC i bought Skyrim which is EPIC>.< but I have a great problem that ruins my expirience and it is the Frame Rate. In low config i have a descent 20 - 30 FPS (it varies a lot :S) depending on the location. I have the minimum requirements for the game which are a 2.0 ghz (ihave 2.2) dual core processor and a 512mb videocard. So i think that the low FPS are being caused by the graphics card memory which is just 512mb. I would like to know if i can add more ram to my Nvidia 9600mGT video card to 1gb (since acer says that the max is 2gb) So i have to buy a memory for my video card or can i "share" from the main RAM that s 4gb, well thx and these are my specs:

    Acer Aspire 8930G
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7500 @2.2GHZ
    RAM: 4 GB
    System Type: 64-bit WINDOWS VISTA
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB
    Board: Acer Aspire 8930 PSMBOU-1234567
    BIOS: Acer V1.06 09/09/2008

Neither actually. You can't add RAM to a video card and it is already using your system RAM when it needs to.
Also lack of on-board video memory is not a problem in 90% of cases. What your notebook is lacking is GPU processing power.

Bethesda's minimum requirements are useless "Direct X 9 compliant video card with 512 MB of RAM " isn't saying much but recommended requirements are a bit more revealing "DirectX 9 compatible NVIDIA or AMD ATI video card with 1GB of RAM ( Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 or higher; ATI Radeon 4890 or higher)."

I can play Skyrim on medium settings, I don't know about the framerate cause I haven't checked it yet, but it ran rather smoothly to me.

@downloads--> So do you mean that my GPU is already capable of using the 2GB , also how it works? i mean it will sound strange but a print on my pc says that the it could go up to 2gb but i don't know how it is possible or it means that my GPU can take up to 2gb from my main RAM?

@demon148--> Do you have the same model and specs as me?, i really want to play this game "smoothly" with this notebook. Do you think that it has something to do with the fact that i don't have the Acer config anymore? i deleted the RECOVERY partition some time ago and i am not using the manufacture configuration.

I ask for your help guys in order to see what can i improve of my notebook to play Skyrim. I will list my main problems.
-> The HD is dying (it already makes rare noices)
-> I don't have the Acer Configuration anymore
    -> My GPU is a 9600mGT with just 512mb
    -> My CPU is a T7500 with 2.2 GHZ

    THX A LOT

Yes- your GPU can borrow some system RAM memory if needed and it does that automatically.
Another thing- 9600M GT in Acers was either 512MB DDR3 or 1GB DDR2 the former being a lot faster since DDR3 memory is a lot faster than DDR2- so if had you "upgraded" to 1GB DDR2 one would have made it slower.

if you had it running ok before, flash it back to that bios and stop playing around with it.
40c for the CPU isn't that hot and well within the safety range
what are you trying to do? get the fans to spin fast all the time or are they never coming on at all even when the CPU get even hotter?
in most every day work on my 8930g the fans are barely on and just turning slowly and only speed up when needed which is how there meant to work
no point having them at full speed all the time as its just added noise for no real benefit

what we ment to be looking at in that vid
it looks like some kid just playing with setting and not really knowing what he`s doing

Shakennstirred, why you can't just upload BIOS 1.20 with EIST unlocked, which I believe you have?

why do you say i must have an unlocked bios?
my overclock has nothing to do with the bios
having the bios unlocked isnt going to help you if your wanting to overclock , as its the cpu`s that are locked not the bios
i got the x9100 Extreme because there are unlocked by Intel

the unlock bios didnt give me anything extra that i could change really
main reason was having VT unlocked and the SLIC 2.1 and 1.21 bios which is what i asked for, but they didnt have v1.21 only 1.20

Here is moded BIOS v1.10 with EIST unlocked and advanced menu: Acer_Aspire_8930_v1.10_WIN_AS6935_8930_SLIC21_ADV_menu_EIST.rar.
It did help me to overclock a little my CPU with ThrottleStop, but it also caused my Lappy to shut down in heavy scenes in games, when i'm using extraoverclocking of GPU (Nvidia 9700M).So,anything you do with it,you do it on own risk.Good Luck!

    Sounds completely strange...

why does me deleting the file off my hdd sound strange
once you have installed it to the pc you never need to install it again
its not like a program you need to keep if you reinstall windows
as the bios file is kept on a chip on the motherboard so once installed its there for life or until you get a newer bios file to overight it.
    so no point keeping it

the x9100 doesn't control the fan the motherboard does via the temperature probe under the CPU
VT isnt enabled by default thats why you need a modded bios to turn it on
this will tell you if VT is now on

Hi guys, I own a 8930g-864g64bn. I would like to upgrade it to 8gb but I understood that it can support only 6gb with 1.21 firmware. So I upgraded it using 1.21-clean.fd, the flashing went ok and it shows 1.21 in the bios.
It still can't see my 4gb modules, tryed in every combination (4, 4+4, 2+4), they are Corsair DDR3 1066mhz. What am I doing wrong?
I noticed also that the serial number in bios is 12345678901...Why did this happen with the clean 1.21?? Should I come back to my original 1.20?
    Thank you very much!

the bios isnt the limiting factor in how much ram works
i dont have bios 1.21(couldnt find one with 2.1 slic), im still on 1.20 and im on 6gb ram.
doesnt just one 4gb stick even work? have you tried both slots
my 4gb stick is in slot 2 but im sure it did work in both, my 2gb stick is the one that came in the laptop, it being a Elpida ebj21ue8bau0-ae-e ..

the 4gb stick that works in mine is a corsair 1066mhz code on it is CM3X4GSD1066 is yours the same

A single 4gb stick didn't work, the pc freezes on boot, tried in both slots and every possible combination. I have exactly the same corsair model you have.

Why do you think that the 4gb is not a bios limit? The chipset should support 8gb. Can you send me the bios that you are using please?
    Thank you

i said that because you said you need bios 1.21 and clearly you dont as i dont have 1.21 so it maybe something else
also alot of cheaper acers you can but more ram in so why would acer limit the higher spec laptop and not the cheaper ones

Hi. Can anyone help me try & work out a screen problem i seem to have recently acquired?

Have been through the re solder of the DC in jack issue, have just re-done it as neatly as possible to make sure it isn't the cause of my problem.

Have always had a slight screen flicker if you for some reason pickup the 8930g, but it's never been an issue. I've just avoided doing so, presuming you're putting undue pressure on connections.

In the last 2 days on normal turning on, have had blue screen/seemingly bad connections, horizontal lines, leading to a complete failure of resolution with the entire screen going white similar to the effect if for some dumb reason you put a magnet near a tv screen!

If the problem occurs, the only resolution is restart & interrupt boot menu, going safe mode or just interrupt & then just starts normally.

Weirdly, crtl + alt + del interrupts blue screen > black screen, so maybe it's not wiring but driver issue? Have updated nvidia drivers & checked what my limited knowledge allows me.

The thing that gets me is how it's completely inconsistent!

Otherwise she's AOK. Funnily enough I've also been looking at this forum working out what CPU to upgrade to [just been negotiating price of X9100], & now this starts to happen.

I've been looking on the interweb but can't find any particular issues similar to the DC jack thing, & the fact that I can sometimes interrupt the blue screen with crtl + alt + del makes me wonder if it's the GPU or something else outside my limited computing knowledge.

If you can think of any avenues to chase up I'd be grateful!

Just remembered I updated BIOS to 1.20 recently, with no problems, if that can have any bearing. Although the more I think about it it seems to be a wiring issue.

    Thanks for the thoughts Download.

I've already repaired the DC jack about a year ago. & redone it today even neater so it's not that [nice firm connection & no flicker in the blue LED's even if you give it a tug].

And I finally got round to updating Win7 to X64 [been meaning to for a while] after the whole screen thing started & have formatted C & D drives [getting bloated!] & reinstalled all software & updated drivers.

Yes I like my Tank too so I'd rather fix it :)

i seem to remember that its has something to do with the bios
im sure they added a fix in a bios higher than 1.14, i remember upgrading the bios and the dash not working, they added a newer bios that fixed it soon after.
it is in this very long thread somewhere lol

FYI I managed to [I hope] fix my dodgy screen issue.

Having convinced myself it was a wiring problem I took it apart, & found that one of the wires feeding into the screen, near to the DC jack, had at some point moved & snagged itself around one of the screws holding the case together. It had worn through the insulation, causing a short.

    That's a relief!

Can I just double check with you guys that you have no problems with the X9100 CPU? It doesn't overheat or anything?

And also, at present I have a 9600M GS GPU, is it really worth upgrading to a GT? List prices for the two are fairly similar.

Nice try with the Gasket close you will close the gap between fun and heat pipes the gasket has on it something to close that gap. You will have better temps. Also Something that i do my self is to cut the Metal Plate from GPU Heat Sink and make it only to atract temp from GPU NOT the Memories . So i use these for the Memories . ::: Zalman, leading the world of Quiet Computing Solutions :::

So with that mod the Heat pipe will be used only for the GPU No the memories . And U can overclock it very much. The g94 core afte 90 Celcius Its Using only the 80% from Gpu NO downclock Afte 100C 70% and after 105C Shutdown So With this Mod With Overclock you Will Have 75C Max.

I use this paste . Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra - top performance for High-End systems!

Its a Metal Liquid and is By far the best I use Artic Silver 5 before its about 6-7 C more .

    hope I help :)

Apologies if this has already been answered elsewhere, but this thread is huge and searching hasn't turned up an answer.

My problem is quite an annoying one, basically if i have music playing, be it via foobar/wmp or whatever, then the laptop pretty much freezes up(not as soon as i play music, but can be anything from a few seconds to minutes): Webpages wont scroll/load etc, but the music carries on playing as normal. The only way to resolve this is to press the mute key on the cinedash, which causes everything to spring back into life again. This will repeat itself if music is restarted(but not always...)

The problem can also occur in games, whereby it will lock up and a single sound effect will loop constantly. Again a mute will unlock the machine.

I've tried different drivers, both from the acer site and realtek ones.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

U are very lucky... mine failed at 90-110°
y didn't dropped! Because of very high temperature the chipset from video card got loose! Y try to do a special operation called "reflow and reball", in a autorized wokshop, but every time they tested, the chipset fail to stay conected properly!!!!
Be carefull, best solution is to buy a special coler pad, try to get a good one around 70-80euro, not just a cheap cooler pad! Acer have big problems with heating!!! :(( in rest are great laptops! :D

I haven't changed my bios at all, unsure without rebooting as to what version it is. Is there a decent guide to changing the BIOS / a recommended version to use?
    Thanks.

For "Download"! u can find a cooling pad at any computer shop, but before u buy, make sure it is a cooling pad that fits your laptop. I can remember the name that y wanned to buy for my 8930g, but make sure that the cooling is blowing the air in the right direction(for more info try a google, very easy) or ask the person at the shop!!!! U can see some cooling pads on youtube onso! :D
try to keep your laptop on hard surface so he can cool himself, and if u do like to play games on your laptop buy a cooling pad(not necesarily if u just watch movie, or internet, not heating at all in my case)

Y just fond on Youtube a great cooling pad for 8930g!!! :D :D :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KQSLaQr8SE if the link doen't work type this on youtube "CM Storm Cooler Master SF-19 Gaming Laptop Cooler Review"
It's a great COOLING PAD FOR LAPTOP GAMING!!!!

hey... in the video he mentioned the name of the cooler that y wanned to buy. :))))) NZXT CRYO LX!!!!!!

    dear friends,

i have a strange problem; my notebook shutsdown randomly and restarts. now as it restarts it does not go further then the windows logo. if i disconect the ac/dc font and run on (my weak battery 15min) all goes well. The notebook has been taken to a repairshop and they checked all and have no other option to say that the motherboard has a problem.
THE NOTEBOOK STARTS ALL |FINE IN SAVE MODE.
i checked the dc connector incl. the wires and dont see notthing that worries me.
must say that this problem started after a clean up of the fan and thermo past on cpu and video.
is this cause of the problem??? i dont think so as in save mode all goes well.

any advise would be welcome. i miss my notebook working on a nettop now is not funny.

    paul

    ok,

it is surely the ac/dc connector that causes the problem. if i start with battery and then plug in the ac/dc conector the notebook crashes.

this this really meas the motherboard is gone????? or is there a simple solution?

can i remove the cable and make a direct connection to the motherboard~~~ there are 4 wires 2 black 2 red which is which?
or can i do something with the battery connector to get a indefinitive source of elec

    please help

have you tried a restore of windows?
if its running fine in safemode there maybe a fault with a driver or file for some reason, worth a shot..
if that doesnt work you may have damaged something with static when you cleaned the fan n cpu
