Hi, the trouble with that benchmark is that I believe it is added to by individuals, thus it cannot be possible to compare like for like. I could put my desktop q6600 in there and it would give many CPU's a good thrashing, seeing how it's running at 3.6ghz.

Still back on topic, I'm in agreement that Acers spec have variations, thus it is difficult to see what you are actually getting. However my laptop was advertised as having DDR3, and thats what I got. Unfortuantely though, the site where I got it from is no longer advertising them :-(

I must agree with chriscatt, don't count on some synthetic benchmarks. In my opinion in real life the quad will hardly outperform the C2D unless you're running some heavy, cpu intensive application which actually support quads and use all cores. So if the price difference is huge and you're not planning to perform CPU intensive task go for the C2D. Though...for future-proof laptop quad might be the way to go..

Hi, or, if the bios supports it, and more than likely it will if it's the same model, purchased a quad later on when the prices have come down and sell off your old processor :)

Hi, I'm a new member of the Acer club and this is my first time in a forum, as to your problem, the best and easiest way is to use either a USB flash drive 16Gb or an external hard drive, and lastly, a duel layer DVD or 2, either way you will have them saved to an external source should you have a problem with your laptop and have to restore it,
    Hope this helps.

For the people concerned about DDR3 i bought mine in canada. My system also shows DDR3 like that in the epowering settings. But like I posted here before its only running at 400mhz, even though it shows in CPU-Z it is corsair ddr3 which can like go even up in to the 600mhz. I flashed the bios to the latest like i stated before, didn't change anything. I think its the cpu that is holding it back as it is only t5800 which has 400mhz fsb. I thought the ram would run at its own speed regardless. Acer support is dumb as hell when I emailed them about the bios update and possible new ones, they said they dont support 3rd party inquries lol! Then I emailed them again that this is a bios question and they say to call the phone support haha. I say screw it, im still pretty happy with the laptop overall, it runs most games and things well enough. The screen is very nice and the blu-ray. Hopefully i can upgrade the cpu if i want to later on...

Sorry to make my first post here a tech question. :)

I've just received my AS8930-7665 and while it's an amazing piece of work, the "5" key on the keyboard is working very oddly. Which is to say, it works about 1 out of every 10 times pressed.

It's also the key with the Euro symbol, which makes me wonder if it's something to do with the keyboard setup or if it's just a bad keyboard and I should send it back?

If anyone else has had a similar experience, it'd be great to know.

    Thanks very much,

    Gus

Well, I have one of these lappys on order and just waiting for it to arrive <hoping it will be today!>.

As many people have added an additional internal HD, I wondered if anyone has added a 500 GB drive rather than a 320 GB?

It drove me crazy that the fingerprint scanner of my 8930 was very bad.
My previous laptop had much better recognition.

After the first few days of retraining the scanner I decided to experiment a little and found out that the fingerprint scanner was actually installed upside down.

So i have to swipe my finger upwards across the scanner to get a good scan/recognition.
    Instead of downwards like 'normal'.

    Has anyone else noticed this?
Perhaps it's just a fluke with my laptop's fabrication.

Anyways, it used to recognize 1 out of 10 swipes, now it recognizes 9 out of 10.

I Hope this information helps someone :p

To make this work you will need to retrain the fingerprint.
I noticed immediatly that only 3-4 swipes were required (like it's supposed to) instead of 20-30 swipes for one fingerprint to be set.

Mine came with quadcore q9000 and two 500 GB drives.

Also I was able to reconfigure my old laptops installation (also intel / nvidia) to this one by copying the entire partition.

Now I have dual boot vista 32 bit and 64 bit :p I use the bios to decide which disk to boot. Also I removed the acer backup stuff, it was way to messy. I kept the install after cleaning it up a bit, in case I really need a 32 bit system to support some bios flashing for instance.
And it's always nice to have a second bootable system at hand in case you break something on the first drive :p

My laptop purchased in EU came with DDR3 (2x2GB Micron sticks capable of up to 610MHz according to SPD info) running at 533MHz.

Btw, does cardreader work for you in Vista x64? Mine cannot see any card at all and there is no "JMicron JMB38X Flash Media Controller" in Device Manager.. Will have to RMA, I guess.

// edit: it works now :) I downloaded latest drivers from station-drivers.com, the one on Acer FTP was useless..

Any one have any ideas how to install the Bluetooth software?

I resently reformated the laptop and managed to install all the drivers apart from one supplyed on the offical website.

The installer tries to install it but it can not find any Bluetooth devices. I thought there is a Bluetooth device installed?

I have had my Acer 8930G-7665 for about a month now, and have a couple of problems that continue:
    1. during startup, it sometimes gets to the "Welcome" screen and just hangs, I have to power it off and then start with the power button anew for it to continue.
    2. At random times my hard disk light comes on solid, and everything comes to a halt from 10 seconds to 4 minutes, then it breaks loose as if nothing had happened and works like normal.
    3. Where can I find a list of current drivers? If I had that, I could verify at least that an old driver isn't hanging me up.
I like the computer, and I am over 66, trying to keep my brain from becoming cement.

    Thx for any info,

    EJ Hines

Hi, have you scanned for virus's and trojans at all. As far as new drivers are concerned you'll need to go to the manufacturers sites, however you could just re-install the ones that came with the laptop, I'm assuming you made recovery, drivers and applications disk?

Help me out here folks please, a while back I posted about mediocre performance on my 8930 (P8400 2.26ghz, 4g RAM, 9600M GT, 320g HDD), I'd been running in 'balanced' battery mode & just switching to 'performance' mode boosted my 3D Mark 06 from around 3500 to a solid 5100. However.................of late I've noticed a slowdown in games & just ran 3D Mark again & it had slid back to the 3500 range. I hadn't changed drivers (nVidia reference 179.28) or any hardware.

I tried the new 179.48 drivers & still only managed around 3600, very disappointing.

Any ideas where to start looking for the lost performance ? TIA.

Thanks saturn95. The laptop itself is great but I have run into the hellish problem of copying my data from my girlfriend's laptop to this one.

I'm copying via wireless from Vista to Vista and the transfer rate is insanely slow. I've disabled remote differential compression, have removed McAfee and used the command netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable to disable transmission control protocol but I still get transfers of between 500-700K. I can download from the internet faster than this! I fear that my 20 gigs of data is going to take forever :-(

Does anyone have any suggestions for improving wireless network transmission speeds? I've spent most of the afternoon researching this on the net but with no joy, well nothing I have tried has really improved things that much.

tip: buy a usb or external sata drive housing

next time you need to transfer from laptop to laptop you can take out the drive and use eSata (or usb)

You can later upgrade your drives and use it for mobile storage space!

I'm getting an SSD once the prices become less rediculous, so I will swap out one of my 500GB drives and use it for storing data.

Also you could try and use a network cable and connect the laptops directly (or use a router/switch).

Also note that windows uses QoS (Quality of service) which means that it will limit data transfers per application so that overall the bandwith is shared.
I never found a use for this, so you might want to disable it.

Yet another note: I've read somewhere that windows media player lowers your bandwith for other stuff if you have it on. It might help to close media center and WMP.

That's all the tips I've got at this point.
I hope any of it helps :D

Thanks for all the suggestions. I actually have two external drives, both almost completely full, but you're right - that might be one way of doing it. Or perhaps leaving both laptops on over night and letting them get on with it.

Yep, I've also read that WMP can sap the network pulling power, so am keeping it closed when doing transfers.

I've also got a router/ADSL modem, however this is provided by our ISP so not as good as some other models out there. I might try hooking both lapops up via cat5 instead of wireless to see if that makes a difference.

Anyway, thanks for your suggestions! I realise I have gone a little off topic!

Wow, it appears that plugging in cables increase transfer speed up to 10 MB/sec. I guess this means the wireless connection is a bit crappy. Maybe there are better drivers out there for the 8930?

    Is flashing the BIOS worthwhile?

Hi, welcome to the forum, sorry but what do you mean by changing the shared memory, doesn't the gfx card have it's own dedicated memory? If you are talking vista's turbo cache then best leave it alone as Vista can deal with it ok and allocate ram where it is necessary. And your english is excellent...

Do you have the latest Realtek drivers installed. They are 2.18. When you plug in to the audio jack it should pop in system tray and say a device was plugged in audio jack. Are you plugging in to the right jack. Mine has three audio jacks and the first one nearest the front is for headphone as yours should be i presume.

I was wondering - for those who have installed a new 7200rpm drive, has this had a noticeable speed difference? Any recommendations as the best programme to use to transfer the OS to the new drive? Guess I should go back and reread this thread! :)

I went to the Acer site with all the drivers, but I just dont see one for Intel "wifi", so I suspect it's listed under some other name. anybody?

My 8930 has just arrived and the process of transfer begins ;)

Hopefully I will not run into any problems, but I have a question regarding connection to a TV - the documentation is not all that great and the user guide reffered to in the supplied Generic user guide is rather sparse.

I have an LCD HD ready TV which has a maximum resolution of 1280 x 768, and has a DVI input but no HDMI.

If I get an HDMI to DVI cable will I be able to play BluRay movies on the TV using the Laptop, or won't it work due to the resolution?

If it is possible, are there any settings I have to change on the 8930 to make sure it works?

Also, does anyone know where to get a User guide. there is not one on their web site.

No idea but it happens with some models so it's better to use the actual ftp, that way you'll sure see ALL the drivers&software provided.

I have tried both the Intel Wifi driver from Acer's ftp and Intel's site, but both of them have not been able to activate the Wireless-N speed on the 8930.

All my HPs connect to the same Linksys Wireless-N router at >120Mbps speeds, but the Acer 8930 is capped at 54G. Is anyone else having the same experiene? Does anyone know of a workaround?

Try this, go into the properties of the card, advanced tab, and change the 802.11n channel width for band 2.4 to "Auto", now you should see up to 150 Mbps.

I have found the answer

Using an HDMI cable from the Laptop to DVI input on the TV works.
When I plug in the cable the laptop automatically sees the TV and adjusts the laptop resolution to the same as the TV and displays a clone (copy) of the laptop display on the TV. Using the Acer media player I can run a dvd and it plays on the TV perfectly (at a slightly better resolution than when the DVD is played in the standalone DVD player connected to the TV via scart.)

However, BluRay cannot be played this way.

What I had to do to play BluRay was to set up the TV in the 'Display Settings' as an 'extension' to the desktop, then move the media player on to the second screen (TV) and play it there.

So all is working well

Still haven't found a full user guide though

It's weird, I've tried this, and also rebooted the machine, but it's still stuck at 54Mbps even though all my HP notebooks are running at 130Mbps.

sigh.. what's going on?? Is there any other setting I should try?

edit: nevermind, to enable Wireless-N, one must set wireless security on router to AES, that worked!!! I found out about this after asking our friend google.

edit 2: even thought I managed to make it go past 54Mbps, but now it's capped at 65Mbps. weird.

Hi, because of licencing regs you aren't allowed to display blue-ray on your laptop screen and the tv both at the same time. All you had to do was 'Fn' 'F5' until the display is on the LCD TV only and it will work fine.

Since a few days or week ago, my laptop doesn't reboot properly.

    Here are the details:
    - Windows boots fine
    - after a Windows reboot or shut down, the screen stays black
sometimes the laptop also shutsdown after I gave the reboot option and waiting for about 10 secs for it to start up (with the black screen)
    - the behavior is constant (and thus very annoying)

    I found two workarounds:
    - after a shutdown remove the power cable and let the Laptop rest (i go to work and shut it off anyways)
    - for a quick reboot I need to shut off the laptop and remove the powercable and the battery (only 1 second is required), then insert battery and wait for video to turn on, then plug the power back in.

after either of the workarounds my screen turns on and the bios post is OK.
If I don't use the workarounds the laptop stays at a black screen and the bluetooth button flashes slowly. The laptop either shuts off or stays in a Black screen (of death).

I am going to reinstall my videodriver, because I am sure a Microsoft Windows
update has killed something in my nVidia driver. I will post the result as soon as I have them.

I don't think it is the laptop though, since some of my friends have the exact same issue with their laptops since a few days / week. And they all have differen brands (but all nVidia video chipsets)

Just wanted to post the workaround and check if anyone was having the same problem.
