Hi, I have all the Vista updates installed, no black screen here, do you get the acer boot screen up? If no, then it's not a windows issue check your bootup settings, specifically ensure the hard drive is first. If you do get the bios screen then it looks like the drivers aren't initiating correctly or there is a problem with the gfx card itself. Uninstall the NV drivers then re-install the latest versions. You could also try this tweak http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=153286

Mine was capped at 65 until I did what I stated above and now it is at 150.

No screen at all, the laptop doesn't power up correctly.
    The backlit doesn't even activate.
I will check changing the drivers later.

Yea... I have done more research on this, it looks like MANY people with the Intel 5100AGN cards in other notebook brands/models are being capped at 65Mbps, especially with a Linksys router like I do.

This is an issue that has to be resolved by Intel eventually because their current driver is simply not consistent, causing dropped connections etc.

Hi, if you're not getting a screen at all then I suspect a hardware fault, possibly the LCD, maybe motherboard, the memory, or the gfx card itself. This certainly isn't a windows issue...

Can anyone recommend what bundled software can be removed from the 8930? I'm looking to get rid of the bloatware, but do want to keep the important things like the fingerprint reader software and other stuff. All suggestions welcome.

What software is trialware apart from the games and MS Office 2007?

With the games, is it best just to remove the Acer GameZone console or do you have to remove each game individually? What about the NTI Media Maker and NTI Backup software.

How is the new drive working out for you?

Hmmmm, I guess Power Director can be removed as it is a 30 day trial version. I also removed the Acer IM (chat) programme as no need for that.

Another thing that made me wonder was eSobi. Is this a 90 day trial version or a full version? I'm happy to stick with google reader for my RSS feeds, so I'm guessing it can be removed.

Hi, Acer gamezone seems only to be a link on the desktop to their site, so I don't know if uninstalling that will remove all the games, so you might end up uninstalling them individually. Yes powerproducer can go but keep NTI's Media Maker if you want to burn CD/DVD's, but the backup can go if you retain Acer's own, I recommend regular backups with whatever.

Another thing that can be done is to reduce the amount of disk space the restore file takes up by following these instructions http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/reduce-system-restores-disk-usage-in-vista/ I recoomend at least 20gbs. There are also 'lite' versions of Adobe reader here, http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Adobe-Reader-Lite-Download-90151.html with Quicktime and Realplayer versions here http://www.filehippo.com/

I would recommend a fresh install to new users, you can download the drivers from the site while you install.

All that Acer CR@P is completly useless, you only need the webcam software , the launcher and the bio protection.

Hi, and where would you download it from, and how can you garantte it is the right copy, you suggested something but failed to fully explain how. Installing a fresh copy is a waste of time and energy, Vista is already there it just needs some care and attention...

You cannot discuss on the forum where to download a copy (forum rules). As far as a clean install, it is not a waste of time, it is the only way to get rid of all the crap/bloatware that comes pre-installed. Yes you can uninstall the crap/bloatware one app at a time but that takes longer than doing a clean install and does not fully remove everything.

Hi, I know that thank you :) so why is it then being suggested? I still disagree, how can unloading some software take longer than having to load the OS, some other software and the drivers as well. Your theory doesn't make any practical sense at all. All this could lead to is a laptop that doesn't function correctly because the advice given is incomplete. There is no explanation of how do to this in the correct manner being given. Just a 'clean install'...

It seems you don't see the benefits of a clean install of the OS but yet it looks like you want a step by step guide to do so, confused.

Hi, oh I think I understand alot more than you think, I see the benefits of not wasting someones time by giving out partial information. When there is already a good OS on the hard drive, all that needs to be done is a bit of pruning. Alot simplier and less of a waste of time and will achieve the same with less issues, ie searching for drivers and downloading them. For christ's sakes, it even hasn't been said to create a backup of the boot partition and a drivers/software DVD. All that has been said could only result in a borked laptop and a worried owner...

I just recommend it for people that want the 8930's awesome power :p

If you don't know how to do it, then you should have bought a cheaper laptop as you obviously don't spend a lot of time optimising your computer.

Also the recovery partition and the bloatware use up disk space better used elsewhere. I just used my old partition from an Asus laptop (almost no bloatware). A clean install does require a install DVD, which can be downloaded by anyone with a MSDN subscription.

Downloading and installing the drivers is easy, as the basic functions of vista are already mostly functioning. The first must have is the intel drivers for the chipset and the wireless (or the drivers for the network card). Be sure to have your firewall ready as well. A virus scanner should come as soon as the network connection is up.

Then install everything that you need and disable all the hardware you dont need. (Most commonly firewire (not on the 8930 :p), bluetooth and the Modem)

the rest is up to you, some services can be disabled (use google before you do), for a small memory boost.
Also you could use stuff like www.ccleaner.com and www.defraggler.com
as well as many of the Microsoft tools at www.sysinternals.com
    Great freeware tools :p

All the Acer stuff took hours on my laptop, as well as removing it. I still have it as a backup OS (32 bit can flash bios, 64 bit might not).

I also have a ghost image of my primary partition, just in case something happens to it. Also I use backup software to store my savegames on a different computer. All this requires additional software...

But still get to know the software and make sure you get what you need for ultimate performance :p

Ati Tool and rivatuner are great for overclocking (although atitool on the 8930 is only a performance monitor).

Perhaps we should start a thread for optimal drivers on the 8930 (nVidia drivers to be the most commonly performance critical driver).

Sure you can do that with e-recovery, creating a bunch of discs with the original os on it.
And drivers you need to download from their site... :)

Been looking at the 8930 for a while now, and since I had decided on only buying a new laptop once Windows 7 had been released I was hoping for a new version with a quad core CPU and maybe a high end GPU...

Now that its arrived, Well I'm happy with the new CPU and the new look keyboard and I guess the 1 Gig 4670 is a improvement on the old 9700GT, but was really hoping acer would go to town with maybe a 4850.

What really has me swaying between the old model and the new one is the new design and look of the thing. I thought the old one was amazing looking with its cine-touch and curved gemstone design, now it looks a bit more normal...

Here is a image for anyone who hasn't seen the new design yet:

when its this model going to be released? the 8935? i mean..., the 8930 its a powerful computer that runs pretty much everyting without probelms (i tested with world of warcraft at max resolution and it was giving me 40 fps...) anyway...wondering, why make a new model so fast, when the 8930, its still amazing? Plus, as far as i know, the 8930 havent been on the market for more than a year?

(sorry for bad english and/or gramar, not my main language)

Well first of all, the 4670 runs rings around the 9700M GT. Almost 35% better, I would say. It's the closest a Mainstream card (128bit) has gotten to a Performance card (256bit). Second, Acer are catching up with the times by adding WiMax and Backlit keyboards. So, it's a good move by them.

I'm still not that crazy about the design though...

I'm thinking about buying an 8930. Can anyone tell me what games are like to play a non native res. Is it still clear?

Also what does the desktop look like in native res. How small are the icons?

    Thanks.

hi, just bought 8920G-6A4G32BN on impulse, (easter offer), saw it loved it and bought it. thing is, it came with too many other software and i dont really feel comfortable with it.

i plan to do a clean format and this will be my first vista clean format. i have read trough this particular sub-forum, and quite a number of people have done clean format and i would appreciate their input in this.

    1. i have vista cd home premium cd from my office computer, can i use the serial number at the bottom of laptop ? i read somewhere it might not be the same which is a bit worrying.

    2. if the installation above doesnt work for whatever reason, can i install e-recovery to restore vista from the hidden partition ?

    3. if the innstallation is succesful, is there anyway i can make a backup of this new clean installation and back it up in to the hidden partition. i.e to use it as future restore point ?

all three problems can be solved by getting a second sata2 drive ;-)
Install on the empty drive and leave the one with the backup stuff intact.

It seems to have fixed itself. I did reinstall my videocard driver (updated to version 182.50)

And i shut down the laptop a couple of times while the power was disconnected and the power was connected at bootup a few seconds after shut down.
The only thing that I haven't checked is rebooting with the power attached. I'll test right it after this post.

I keep doing the workarounds I found, but I haven't had to eject the battery for a week now.

Has anyone noticed that the range on the 8930G remote control is terrible? With the one i received with laptop Acer Aspire 8930G-944G64Bn if i don't point directly at the cir and move any more than a metre away the signal is not picked up. Anyone with similar problems?

    Well that did not work...
Rebooting froze again with a black screen (backlit stays off as well).
Also the bluetooth light was on (continuously).
After 10 seconds the laptop turned off again.

Turn on, screen stays black (not even backlit), bluetooth stays lit.

Removed power cable, removed battary for 1 sec, turned on, screen backlit turns on, reattached power cable, boots ok.

    Annoying :(

Ahhhhh!!!! Why make a remote that only works a metre away!!! Not impressed. Another quick question for anybody...when you restart vista does your eaudio settings always revert back to movie? I set it too music --> rock and everytime i reboot it goes back to movie.

Well, another vote here for a complete re-installation of the OS on a 8930.

On my machine, World of Warcraft was playable at 1920x1080 resolution, but only on lower settings. If I put everything on "High", I would get 3-5 fps, not good! I'd already removed all of the software which I didn't use, so there shouldn't have been any bloatware left behind.

I installed the Windows 7 beta (build 7000) on a partition, having heard good things about performance, copied my WoW folder from the Vista boot drive to the Windows 7 boot drive (just in case!), ran the WoW repair.exe and then launched WoW. 1920x1080 resolution, every video setting on "High", 30-40 fps! :D

I thought there would be an improvement, but this is ridiculous, so out with the old, and in with the new.

I gathered all of the drivers and software I'd need, and this weekend I nuked the existing Vista installation, formatted my C: drive and installed Vista from scratch. Strangely, the license code from underneath the computer wasn't accepted by the installation. I triple checked it and so did other people, but the installation wasn't having any of it. Luckily, I have an MSDN subscription through work, so I grabbed a key from there (that's where I got the Vista DVD from the in the first place) and went ahead. Re-installed all of the drivers, e-launch software, Arcade Deluxe etc. etc. Fired up WoW, 1920x1080, everything on "High", 25-35 fps!

Now I know that my new installation has everything on it that the Acer build has, so everything *should* be the same, but it obviously isn't. Something in the Acer build is definitely wrong, as you can see by my frame rates. I have no idea what it is, but I'm happy with my system now!

    So, in conclusion:

    • Don't be afraid to nuke the Acer Vista installation and install your own.
    • Make sure you back everything up that you need to keep before you do this. I have already installed a second SATA HDD, so this bit was easy.
    • Make sure you have all of the drivers and software downloaded and ready to go. I'd already copied the entire set of software and drivers from the Acer ftp site to my second HDD, for easy access.
    • I have no idea why my license key didn't work during the installation, but I'm glad I had access to a different one!

I tried changing the resolution of WoW, to try and increase my fps, and the result was nowhere near as sharp as the native resolution. YMMV.

Your key didn't work because that key goes with the Acer licensed copy of Vista. That key goes with the version of Vista on your restore dvd's.

    Hi all,

Hoping somone can give me some help. I have an 8930G and can't seem to get the HDMI output to work. In the settingsI am unable to set it as the default. I have just updated the latest 9700MGT drivers as I was having problems playing my Blu ray discs. If anyone can point me in the right direction It would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Gavin

I have a 6935G, the 8930G is just too big, but was wondering if anyone has opened theirs up would like to see where the 3rd wifi/wimax antenna is placed?, also a picture of the tv tuner with cable attached, as my model does not have the tv tuner, also how do the built in 5.1 speakers sound?, the 2.1 setup on my 6935G sound great,

Anyone could recommend any good backpacks for 8390G monster ?

18"4 isn't very popular size and i dont want to carry it in my current backpack, that is suited for 15"4 and 17" kind of laptops (i had Toshiba Satelite before).

Would be good if the backpacks werent ridiculously expensive, something up to £50 for example. I've seen someone recommending that Targus TXL617, but i can't seem to find it anywhere in UK (only links to US stores that'd ship to UK, which would cost twice the original cost of the backpack itself :E).Thanks in advance

I couldn't find the backpack I have now, but apart from the color i think it's this one:
    http://targus.com/uk/product_details.asp?sku=TCB001EU

Even though it says 17 inch, it can snugly fit the 8930 (although it wont be very well protected at the top of the bag)

Mine is black and dark metallic blue.

Hi, I have one of those bags and the 8939 fits nice and snug into it. Also the targus warrenty is a lifetime one, and they don't ask for the bag to be returned or quibble over the reasons for making a claim. They just ask for some details and the tag inside the bag to be sent to them and they'll then replace it. I have done this three times now for different Targus cases and have been impressed with their service...

Mine was capped at 150Mbps (using D-Link DIR-855 Quadband router and drivers supplied by Acer).

Getting latest 12.4.0.21 drivers from http://www.station-drivers.com/page/intel lan-wan.htm got me this - nice and stable 300Mbps, using WPA2 w/ AES:
