Have only ever replaced a CPU on a laptop in the past, so not very familier with opening them up, only decided to try this one after searching the net for upgrades and stumbled apon this place , must admit i am looking fwd to it, be interesting to see how much better it will be compared to when i first bought it ... specs were t5800 4gb ddr3 but running at 400mhz 9600m GS and 2 320gb 5400rm drives and the 954 screen .. gone to a t9400 to start, 9700gt, 120gb ssd ( still undecided which one yet) 750gb 7200 scorpio black , tv card and a 1080p screen, should keep me busy .. oh and change the acer sign to blue to match the rest
-
Well the CPU will be a big boost on performance and temperature.
The t5800 is 65 NM and 800mhz Fsb
That's why your ram said it was running at 400mhz its actually running at 800mhz but is read as half.
The t9400 is 45nm so temperatures will take a nice drop also and your ram will actually run at 1066mhz so it gets a speed bonus also.
For a 1080p display you will also need a dual lamp inverter.

Thanks squee, i did notice the ram started running at 1066mhz when i installed the new CPU, i was going to upgrade the ram to crucial, but noticed the stock was micron, which is pretty much crucial without the tag
I have the dual inverter and the cable froma donor machine, just trying to find a screen, looked on ebay and they all say compatible and id rather get an orig samsung
I done a temp test ealier, CPU at idle, for an hour never went above 22 , GPU was about 64 idle , is that high? i looked at my GPU cooling block and it seems my factory one already has the cutout for the diode on the circuit board, hopefully you can see the pic below
-
mine idles in the 50's but thats with MX-4 etc .
Though when i replaced thermal on mne i noticed a scorch where the gpu had hit thermal limit 105c literally black near chip :<
Though its running quite fine havnt tried it under load after reapplication though -
Thanks squee ,
Mine has MX-2 on it, havnt tried it under load yet, want to wait till i get all the mods done, may have to invest in an air pad, but me thinks finding one thats big enough for an 8930g might be a task -

I quite like the zalman one, the cooler master one, looks like a speaker grill with a few fans bolted to it

Right after the mod to heatsink I got to 89c peak under heavy gpu load and using a makeshift stand with 2 Sega boxes. That and a second rethermal. Glad to see its not 102c again

using 90w power supply.
Cpu is rated 44w and GPU is rated 45w not including est of system.
Edit need help. Just reinstalled windows 7 64bit and all drivers.
Now the Acer media panel on turns up volume in increments of 2 instead of 10/20.
That and there is now on screen display.
What am I missing had it working before? -
What gives???? -

Be interesting to find out if thats a common issue, before i shell out on win 7

Yeah I can confirm the above. Just a search to the drivers site in acer. Select vista as operating system and install. All A-OK. Perhaps this might work on windows 8........:rolleyes2: -
the problem with win 8 is it has its own volume level that comes on the screen when you change it, I think this is interfering with the acer program.
we need to find away to turn the windows volume control -
can anybody help me with a list of compatible processors and grafic cards???

About CPU selection it depends on what it is WORTH upgrading to and what you can AFFORD upgrading to.
It is WORTH upgrading to an X9100 extreme edition. The question is what you can AFFORD?
If you own a T-model, perhaps an upgrade to an P-model will offer an extra kick (affordable solution)
Also maybe the Q9000 is good to mention but you might not be totaly compatible with it.
About GPU selection a decent upgrade is the Nvidia 9700m GT, considering the extra cost of replacing also the backplate and heatsink.
A mediocore upgrade is replacing the 9600m GT that has DDR2 with the one that has DDR3, making no changes at all and providing a small boost,
Also it is said that the 9650 GT is another option but it requires modified drivers and I personaly think going to a slower DDR2 is not worth at all.
Unconfirmed succes is for the nvidia quadro FX 3700m, but there is no solid proof.
Lastly worth mentioning is if you decide to go for both X9100 and 9700m GT a PSU upgrade is suggested, meaning a new power brick of 120watts and a new 120Watt compative power jack.
Hope I helped -
I would like to know where did you buy usb tv board with thank you -
-
Well Peeps I want to put to sleep the myth surrounding the Quadro FX 3700 ................ It does not work in this laptop I have two of these laptops both with X9100 cpu;s ssd;s etc etc and with power supply exceeding 160W ie 19v and 7.1a having tried all possible solutions to change vbios etc etc they will not startup at all.
Video card used in a Dell XPS works great so not a problem with card your max is the 9700M-GT 512Mb DDR3.
Got a real good deal on second X9100 from the USA 125$ incl postage and yes not an engineering sample SLB48 -
Indeed the best card is the 9700m GT, but considering the myth around the quadro FX 3700, mine boot up quite nicely. The problem was running the card...... BSODstorm......Forgot to mention that I had the HP one with the .05 bios and upgrade it to .10. But no success at all.

Thanks in advance -

Thanks jerry, I'm purchasing as I type
I thought that'd be the best to get, but you know yourself you buy something and find someone who bought it cheaper...

Hi guys and gals Long time visitor, first time poster here looking for some help. Had my 8930g for almost 4 years now, When I first got it i went for the windows 7-32 bit upgrade and i remember way back then i had some issues with the sound drivers which eventually i resolved. A few years have passed and my machine has given me many many hours of great gaming. But eventually it started to slow down and grumble so decided to do a fresh install , Had the chance of a new win 7 64 bit at a good price so went ahead and installed. But after these years have passed my "little grey cells" are failing me and i cant remember what I did to resolve a couple of issues. 1) Mike jack on front wont work :- in control panel even when i plug in mike it says " not plugged in" although windows notification tells me a device was plugged in to jack - headphones work fine though. downloaded and installed latest realtek driver for win 7 64bit from acer site as it says this is not supplied by win 7 but this hasn't sorted it- installed eaudio software as well still no joy, what am i missing ? or do i just need to keep removing and installing sound driver till it works ? 2) haven't installed the "chip set" download but i did this after the first win 7 install way back when, does this need installing again ? (total ignorance here lol) 3) attempted to do the "windows experience " index test but it fails to run saying " your machine doesn't have the multi-media support to run this test" ?? now im sure i didnt have this problem last time so what have i forgotten to load ?( not loaded acer arcade stuff do i need it? for this test to run ? ) Thanks in advance for your help if anyone can give me answers or point me to the places in forum where these Qs have been covered I would be really grateful ! Im plowing through the forum from page 1 and am at 101 and solved 2 or 3 other probs on the way but i'm losing the will to live reading every post
Edit :- finished reading full thread and didn't find what I was after. Went ahead and did chip set anyway (thought even if up to date it wouldn't do any harm) removed both realtek and nvidia audio drivers re loaded Realtek driver but audio control panel still says audio jack not plugged in :/ Headphones working fine, on board mike working fine and guess what ? headphone mike working fine ! ain't life and computers strange?? Think i need to go lay down in a dark room for a week)

Long time no chat, lads! I come again in my hour of need. I done gone goofed and bricked the bloody thing.
Was trying to FINALLY flash the 1.21 BIOS, it flashed, went to shut down, hung for a minute, powered off and immediately back on, then shut off again. I immediately knew SHTF but I tried powering it on anyway. Alas, she's deader than Batman's parents.
So now. My course of action is? I do sincerely hope she's only softbricked but the fact that I get a blank black screen upon boot leads me to fear the worst... -
-
I've since tried the whole Fn+Esc thing with the BIOS on a cd, Dvd, or usb drive. No dice.
If I turn it on without any key combination, it starts, goes for about 5 seconds, powers back down, then restarts itself and introduces me to the same black screen.
Edit: thread in question. http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/574261-acer-aspire-8930g-boot-up-bios-frozen-3.html -
Does any body have a bios for the 8930g that is unlocked to allow me to change out the wifi card , I'm trying to put in a intel ultimate 6300 WLAN card but its wont work due to the whitelist, I'd be extremely grateful if somebody could help me as I've been searching with no success for quite some time.

try the forums on here Bios Mods -The Best BIOS Update and Modification Source
they can mod a bios for you -
The problem might be the card itself- if it is a Lenovo card it won't work whatever you do. -
I currently have a intel 5100 pci-e card in it .
I tested the card in a Lenovo laptop and it didn't work at first until I bypassed the whitelist on the Lenovo laptop so I assumed it was the same case with my acer .
Where do you think the issue lies , it pick's up the card but it doesn't work with code 10 error .
Thanks for the reply too I've been trying to find some info for the last couple of weeks now -
Well one thing I know for sure is that it's not a whitelist- no Acer notebook ever employed any kind of whitelisting.
The fact that the card did not work on Lenovo notebook doesn't entirely confirm that it's not a Lenovo card- or simply might not be a card whitelisted for this particular Lenovo notebook.
It would be helpful if you could test it in a different non-Lenovo notebook. Also what does it look like in device manager? -
I've just been thinking same that I need to try it in another laptop .
The driver is installing ok in device manager but I have the ! At the side of it , also if I go into the device via device manger I can access all the options of the device but it just won't work and it has the error code 10 failed to start hardware properly. -
How To Fix Error Code 10 (This device cannot start) -
Hey guys
I got a refurbished acer aspire 8930g a couple days ago and It has 512mb of graphics ram - I was wondering if I could increase that amount to to 1gb or even 2gb. Also has anybody ever overclocked before on this computer cause I was wondering if I could do so without damaging it
Thanks
Taffy -
You can't increase the ammount of VRAM. You can only replace the whole graphics card (if it's MXM unit)

I know its a chore -
hi back in feb this year. my screen was dim so i got inverter tried fitting myself damaged screen. so i got new one of ebay glossy 1920x1080p like other one. annoying how in corner hair trapped in screen this seems be common problem now. so the question is since i got new screen fitted the function keys no longer work for brightness. and when i click battery icon that dont change any brightness at all. i am just hoping the screen is already at full brightness but hard to say when i playing resident evil 6 on it and thats a dark game lol.
-
Has anyone replaced the original (dual lamp) inverter and found screen brightness control not working?
Opening Windows Mobility Center, I can see that when I press Fn and right or left arrow keys, the brightness slider moves smoothly across - but actual screen brightness only changes by one notch and in reverse order (Fn and left key increases brightness, Fn + right key decreases brightness).
After fitting back the original (noisy) inverter, screen brightness works fine again.
Running windows 7 64, nvidia 197.16 drivers
-
I notice that with the original inverter (blue pcb) fitted, Fn+righ/left keys would control brightness even at the bios splash screen - so maybe it's some hardware / bios thing.
Out of curiosity, I disassembled another 8930g that I have - and the same thing happens - brightness contols works with the original inverter but not with either of the two brand new inverters that I have.
Anyway, I've given up on this now, and reassembled everything back together again - my family were threating to trash all the laptop parts - and it's better to have a little inverter whine than no brightness control
@ GARNER_WDH - with the new inverter, screen brightness was fixed (give or take 10%) somewhere in the mid position - so you may be having a similar problem.
-
screen bright but dont know if full brightness and also seller said maybe not screen for may 8930g so he asked for my screen part to see if it the same. also i finding screen colours on things different are you as well Also acer crystal eye camera not found when installed reinstalled drivers no luck

Hi could somebody please help??
I have an 8930 g and really like the laptop but suddenly had a loss of screen resolution especially noticeable on text.
I believe it is due to a mechanical issue with the hinges or the wiring between the body and the screen as I can sometimes provoke the problem by moving the screen or hinges in a certain position. This causes it to improve although
not return to normal. Then again returns to poor resolution.
I believe there is a ribbon cable in there somewhere. The laptop is 4 year old but has been looked after well....Please cba somebody help?? Sorry for any typos, my screen is hard to see right now!
Thanks -
It may be a ribbon cable indeed. Consult a Service Manual, find the cable in question and replace it.
These are cheap on eBay.
It would be good if you could test the notebook with an external monitor. If the ribbon-cable theory is correct everything should be clear on an external monitor. -
Hallo to everyone! I've just bought on Ebay an express card 54mm USB 3.0 from CSL Computer. The brand of the card is the same: CSL.I performed installation on my Acer 8930G laptop: I installed the drivers contained in the two folders on the installation CD and inserted the card in the laptop slot. In Win7 device management page everything seems to be ok (two new devices are in the list, and properly installed), but when I try to connect a USB device in a port of your card, nothing happens. I tried with a mouse and an external HDD USB 3.0 (Toshiba Stor.E). I also plugged in the power cable in order to supply extra power to the express card, but nothing happened again. My operative system is Windows 7 Ultime Edition 64 bit. Have you got an idea to try to make it work? Here is the link where you can see the item: 2 Port USB 3.0 ExpressCard Port Karte 54mm PCMCIA-Express-Card für Notebook, ... | eBay
Thank you very much!
