    The T9400 should work fine. You might have a defective CPU. I would say try and return it, then go for another CPU.

    I suppose the other possiblity is that it's overheating. Did you apply thermal paste properly? What did you use? Either Article Silver 5 or IC Diamond are my choices.

    I prefer IC Diamond but that's just my opinion.

    Well since no one can answer any of my video card questions I've decided I'm just going to order another one and hope for the best. I found a cheap 9700m on ebay.

    I ordered some heatsink brackets for it, (33.AP70N.001 & 60.AP70N.001) but it was hard. Only Germany had any, so it'll be a while before they get here if they ever do (I paid enough for them).

    dude, i dont know why you bothered, you should have overclocked the 9650 to 9700m gt, ive overclocked a 9600m gt to achive speeds of the 9700m gt, with temps that peak at 72 degrees stress tested, this gave me an extra 300 points with heaven mark. epic if you ask me, ive also put the x9100 cpu in here, and runs nicely at 3.5ghz. ive had prime95 running for hours on end, as far as i can tell, temps dont get above 60degrees. cool if you ask me :p with this, i can play crysis 2, on low specs and get a nice frame rate. and the darkenss 2 on max settings.

    Hello! Been a long time lurker here but looking for a few answers.

    1. Is GPU-Z always right? Do I have 9600M GS 512mb DDR2?
    screengpu.gif

    2. Can the T9600 2.8GHZ be overclocked at all on this laptop?

    3. Is there a GPU upgrade from the 9600M which will get me DDR3 and not require a new heatsink and more power? I'm considering the DDR3 version of my model if I can find it at a bargain basement price.

    4. Anyone know if this laptop can dual boot from internal HD and ESATA? Wouldn't have thought it'd be an issue but never actually used the ESATA yet and sometimes these things can be a little quirky.

    5. Anyone have a universal laptop charger that works well with this laptop? Been wanting to get one for travelling.

    6. USB 3.0 expresscards, anyone used one with this laptop? I know it's not full 3.0 speed but do you get any more bandwidth/speed by going for one with less ports, should I go for the model with the power cable or is the one with no power port/cable better and therefore not require this?

    7. Is there a definitive way to tell if I have 8930 or 8930G. There's no "G" on the front of the laptop but I remember being told it was a G at some point.

    A little backstory if you fancy info on what I use it for:
    A friend sold me this laptop for £50, stock it had 4GB ram, T5800 and I believe the DDR2 9600M GPU. I only bought it as it was a steal and have been using my desktop, mac mini and netbook as my main systems. Recently I started upgrading it, added SSD boot drive, cleaned out all the filth inside the case that was overheating it and re-installed Windows 7. Even just these three steps made it a much more responsive system, the old hard drive was knackered. Now I'm aiming to get a little more performance out of it without throwing too much money away on old parts.

    I've been using it as an all-in-one media center as the big screen, blu-ray drive and dedicated GPU mean it's a very versatile entertainment laptop. Got a USB TV tuner set up to record TV programs and a 3TB hard drive for media. I've done light gaming on it with current titles and I have to say it performs just fine for my "console style" offline gaming needs, however I have noticed when using the mouse it lags bad! Is this the DDR2 graphics or just overall suckyness? I'm considering moving my desktop to work and using this as my main system at home depending on the upgrades. I do game

    Upgrades I've done/doing/recommend/hope will work: (because it's bloody annoying searching through this thread for individual part upgrades)

    Agility 3 60GB SSD boot drive works well with this laptop

    Prices for the X9100 3.06GHZ CPU seemed a little uneconomical for a boost on an old laptop (£135) I snapped up a T9600 2.8GHZ (£30 delivered) which appears very similar to me except the clock speed, it ups the FSB and cache from my stock T5800 2GHZ so it seems it'll be boosting the laptop on all levels. Hasn't arrived yet..

    Got a 4GB stick of ram on its way to up it to 6GB. I do audio work so that ram will get used, plus I have had problems while gaming where windows will minimise the game and say low on ram - though this could be because I'm still in 32 bit. I'll also reinstall W7 in 64 bit once i've finished upgrading bits!

    Battery is knackered so got a 14.8V high capacity replacement from eBay on its way, only £20ish.

    USB 3.0 expresscards look to give a nice boost even though you don't get full USB 3.0 speeds or power.

    Only thing left will be the GPU... as I said I'm not expecting to play BF3 on full settings I prefer a lot of older games, and well optimised games like Skyrim work fine on existing GPU so I'm looking for suggestions for an economical improvement. My GPU is apparently 9600M GS 512mb DDR2, but I thought there was only 512 DDR3 or 1GB DDR2 versions so do I have DDR2 or DDR3?

    Also installed and enabled Throttlestop because in the past I had seemed to have throttling issues but maybe it went away when I reinstalled the OS, as throttlestop hasn't detected anything yet.

    Phew /longpost
    Cheers!

    You should be fine the 9600M GS you have is DDR2 as i states.

    You can Get a 9600M GT thats 512mb DDR3 for the job

    GZ on cheap lappy and cpu upgrade was cheap enough.

    The throttling issue is only properly noticeable with games, You see they stutter quite a bit, Chipset Clock Mod turned on in Throttlestop @ 100% fixes this.

    The Esata Port I dont know if it will boot from and i dont recommened booting from externals anyhow.

    THe PCI expresscard should give better bandwidth but for devices that need the extra power it needs to use the usb from the ones you have.

    hey dude, just read your post. and thought id give a bit of info,

    i recently upgraded my laptop. and now it runs a char,

    i had the 9600m gt 1gb ddr2 version graphics card. and tbh, it sucked. i got the 9600m gt ddr3 512 mb version for i belive 60, you could sell you gpu on ebay for 30 -40, and get an upgraded one like i did, i will also add, i overclocked my 9600m gt to the same speeds as a 9700m gt, giving me an overall 40% increase in perfomance from the ddr2 version. tempratures are lower than the stock temps. as its also undervolted and onlyhits 70degrees c max when stress tested, and normally hovers at 67 degrees whilst playing crysis 2 or black ops 2. i can just about squeze the performance out of this card to play far cry 3.

    also as for your cpu, i would see it beificial upgrading to a quad core cpu, i got my x9100 for i belive 70. i also overclocked it to 3.5ghz. giving me a total of 7ghz. and temps dont hit anything above 60 when stress tested. i too upgraded to the 9600 cpu, but i sold it on due to it not being powerful enough and getting a bit hotter than my current cpu. my advice is, if you can get your hands on an x9100. do it, no turning back. you see if you can find a laptop online that will play pretty much any game, and has 3.5ghz processor for £300.

    i also upgraded the ram in my laptop. belive me it was worhtwhile. games really munched on ther extra 2gb. also, when i get round to it. ill be adding some small fans inside the laptop to ventilate the components more. hopefull knocking off an extr 10-5 degrees heat over. for the price of 6 pounds. seems worthit to me, however. i am designing watercooling for this laptop. so far so good. my circitry is good. no leaks, just got to fit it now, i play on adding this with no modifications to the case, ATALL.

    also. unless a processor is unlocked. you cannot overclock it in this laptop. belive me, i tried for ages, trying with a PLL mod. it would not give, the only way is getting an unlocked processor.

    if you decide to do any of the suggestions ive mentioned. id be glad to help you with any troubles you may have or any questions you may have.

    peace out man

    Hey guys thanks both for the useful info!

    With the GPU, it sounds like it's worth me picking up the DDR3 model, and news that it can be overclocked is great. I did a quick search on eBay to see if there are any other mxm2 cards with 512mb ddr3 and found "HD 4500" for a similar price, don't know enough/can't find enough to compare the two myself what do you guys reckon?

    ATI Mobility Radeon

    On the X9100 I thought it was dual core not quad? I was looking at a Q9000 but my motherboard is the 001 model so according to most people on this forum it can only handle dual anyway. So the X9100 overclocks easily to 3.5GHz without adding internal cooling or a high wattage charger? Hmmm not sure which to go with. I didn't plan on much overclocking due to heat and power but when its gaming usually it is on a laptop cooler.

    So I could probably get my money back on the T9600 as they usually go for £40, I've found an X9100 for £70, it will definitely work with any 8930/8930g and is that a good price? I remember reading someone couldn't get it to work but maybe it was faulty.

    Also I've never undervolted a cpu but sounds like its necessary with the x9100. Is it easy and won't it affect the performance?

    go with the 9600gt DDR3 or a GT240M as long as its MXM 2 will work fine.

    The cooling on the 8930g is sufficient for the X9100 and if you have a 9600gt or lower the Stock 90w Charger is enough.

    I only needed the 120w because i have the 9700gt (after upgrading) and it was draining battery even when charging unless i undervolted the cpu.

    CPU power requirement is 44w before undervolting and the gpu required 45w under load.

    The x9100 can be undervolted to save power and heat at stock speeds and it will overclock to around 3.4ghz at stock voltage. 3.5 wards requires the next step up in voltge to be used.

    Also it depends on the CPU i got the rare E0 Stepping one i cant measure temps but it runs cooler that other though it doesnt let me undervolt as low as some get theres and my max OC is 3.5ghz it crashes any higher.

    Though 3.5ghz is theoretically the max this cpu goes with our laptop not many get higher that 3.6 overclocking it.

    Thanks for the pointers, the DDR 3 version is about the same price of the 240m which seems a little better to me.
    So this GT 240m will be ok for GPU without changing the cooler or charger?
    Genuine Acer 5739G 5935G 7738G Dell M15x nVIDIA GT 240M Graphic Video Card KCTKH | eBay

    Looks MXM II to me, and I believe the memory is listed incorrectly at 240mb as surely it would be 256mb minimum.

    Do you know if the 240m comes in different size/speed variations like the 9600 gt? It seems from the site that it only comes in ddr3, and from googling the part number it seems this part number is for 1GB DDR3 but I'm completely new to laptop GPUs and upgrading them!!

    EDITS
    Actually, it's not the same as the DDR3 9600, it's half the price!

    I did a google round and found this thread about the different types of MXM: http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/396320-acer-mxm-models-cards.html

    Seems the 240m won't work as it's MXM-A

    I read this thread, searched using google, expermented and now I need your help.

    I want to use virtual machine on my Acer 8930g - I need it for Windows Phone 8 programming or to be specific - Windows Phone 8 emulator in VS 1012 for Windows Phone.

    I already installed BIOS Version/Date Acer V1.21, 3.3.2011. BUT when I enter "msinfo32" in command prompt and get to System Information to look for Hype-V options (down on the list) all is OK except "Hyper-V - Second Level Address Translation Extensions" - This option says NO.

    How can I enable that because BIOS v1.21 is not enough or am I doing something wrong.

    Thank you.

    Ok guys got an issue, I bought a 9600M GT (ddr3 version) installed it and nothing! No picture on screen whatsoever. In case I had done something wrong and messed up the motherboard I reinstalled the DDR2 version and it works fine, so unless I've done something wrong it's the card. Any ideas or is the card dead?

    Also a heads up to anyone who's never upgraded a laptop GPU before and looking to do an upgrade, It was a pain in the to fit the card first time round, a lot more fiddly than swapping the CPU or any desktop upgrade I've done.

    EDIT: Last thing I can think of is could it be the bios? Currently only got 1.05 so maybe I'll give it a go. Anyone have details about the different bioses and the differences?

    Does anyone know of a place that'll ship the 2 9700m gt brackets (33.AP70N.001 & 60.AP70N.001) to Canada?

    Or anyone got any they want too sell?

    The ones on my 9600m gt 512 ddr3 don't line up.

    Try your local authorized acer parts sypplier. I got mine from them. Found them also on ebay/amazon from time to time but they were too expensive there.

    Upgrade the bios might give you a solution. Although the card doesn't need any mods to the laptop. It snaps right in and works. Check the card if it is warm after one minute of boot. Probaply a busted capasitor during transport or because it is faulty from the beggining :(

    Mine was a DDR2, but you're right I could've just gone for the DDR3 version of the 9650. I wanted the 9700 because I figured I could clock it higher, but I didn't know it would be so hard to find a heatsink for it.

    Supposedly the fastest you can get is the Quadro FX3700M which is about as fast as the GT240M. Not everyone can get that card to work though. It requires a lot of power.

    Join the club. I think I found a website that has the 60.AP70N.001 but it's in Germany. Acer HEATSINK.VGA.MXM3 60.AP70N.001, 33,00 €, Laptop-Parts.de

    And just to do the internet of frustrated acer fans a favor; here is where I bought my 33.AP70N.001 from. http://www.zandparts.com/en/Acer-33.AP70N.001

    Could you tell us more about how you did that? The only parts I can find on Amazon/ebay are for the UK, Italy or France. And every Acer parts dealier I try to order from is sold out.

    Have you ordered your parts yet? Did you get them? Or have you received any shipping info?

    I ordered my 60.ap70n.001 toward the beginning of the month and it still hasn't even shipped yet. :\

    I would like to contribute to the whole mess about the GPU upgrade. I gave another go to the FX 3700m. Havbing installed some extra heat spreaders to the original heatsink I gave it a shot but the laptop didn't boot up at all. Seems the only parts that are able to be installed are those of an HP model.

    I couldn't find at the time another card so I abadoned the project.

    I decided to go to a smaller solution, an HP FX 2700m. Its has a TPD of 65Watt rather than the 75 of the 3700m. I don't know where I have read it but the acer motherboard (or any motherboard with an mxm slot, I think) can deliver up to 65Watt. The HE tab can increase it to 75. I don't stand behind that, because I don't know if its true.

    I got myself an 2700m, installed it like a charm and boot up nicely. Installed drivers from laptop2go, an older version 198.05 and fot a single day, all seems ok. Haven't tested the hdmi yet though.

    Run Far Cry 3 and Lost planet 3 at low to medium settings and went pretty smooth. It idles at 50 - 55 degrees and maxs out at 78 with the acfan control manualy at high speed. I also have a coolermaster U3 but seems it doesn't need it.

    Windows expirience gives 6.6 to every item, except the hard drive that has 5,9. Will keep you updated for anyting

    No. It uses the one from 9700m. The larger one. The card is an mxm III size with the HE connector. Pictures of the inside will be up a little later.

    P.S. Both HDMI and VGA output doesn't work

    9700m gt gets 6.5 on overclock

    hmmmm maybe a 9800m gt will work

    it has the HE connector but is 65watt only also

    I was aiming for a 3600m but I couldn't find one at a decent price. I paid 65 euros for the 2700m so it was worth it. Installed the latest drivers with a workaround :D

    yea by pure fluke 9800m gt mxm HE was on ebay reported booting but blackscreens so it needs oven treatment.

    if it works over than the fact its the first time i have seen this slot type for this card it will be great also maybe try flashing the 3600m gt to a 9800m gt see if that boosts performance or flash the 2700m to a 9700m gts

    I am goona buy an FX 3600m heatsink and mofidy it. Possibly open a hole to the bottom cover.

    Propably try using geforce drivers via device id change, rather than risking flashing bios. There are no reports of succesfully flasing either 2700m to 9700m gts or an 3600m to 9800m gt.

    Still waiting for the heatsink. I haven't tested the driver change yet since I've read that there is no actual benefit. No HDMI and VGA output though and propably no solution to that.

    I will buy an FX 3600m that has HDMI support and try. I haven't found a decent price for an HP part.

    On the other hand, the 2700m is OK. No much over heat (max 81 degrees on Lost Planet 3).
    I have my extreme x9100 at 1,175V at stock speed during game, and 1,25V and 3,5 GHz all the other time for performance.

    Without the lower cover, GPU idles at 38 degrees and CPU at 37 asthe laptop rests on the Coolermaster U3 pad.

    Even with the lower lid on and without the base, GPU idles at 45 - 51 and CPU at 43 - 47.

    Haven't try any gaming with the lid on, and the cooler base of...... :D

    So.... Bottom lid on, cooler master base off and gaming NO.

    GPU reaches 95 degrees and laptop shuts down.

    I received today the larger heatsink and will start to modify it. Also bought an FX 3600m. Will test it with the new heatsink and post results.

    Though I might be discouraged, later I will replace the power brick with a 150watt and give the FX 3700m another chance.

    Also anyone interested in my parts that are left behind I will gladly accept offers

    Currently:

    - One 9700m GT
    - One stick DDR3 2GB
    - One stick DDR3 4GB
    - One P8400 CPU
    - The side USB board without the TV out

    In a few time I MIGHT have

    - a complete mxm III heatsink
    - the current fx 2700m

    I haven't finished all the tests yet.

    For the screen you will need new full HD panel and probably the screen cable that has two connectors for the 2 inverters. I am currently looking for more info on that.

    Could you please tell me who your acer dealer is?

    I've been searching for Acer dealers and messaging them and I always get the same reply; they don't have it.

    If you ever get your mxm III heatsink working I'll gladly buy your old one for the 9700m

    This is getting really frustrating for me. I've been looking since like, August, and nobody has this part.

    Seems these parts are really scarse.
    What I meant with dealer, I was reffering to the authorized distributor of parts. Plain talking the guy whos ships parts in for repairing Acer Laptops.

    Keep searching.

    So, the FX 3600m won't boot. But I am assuming that the card was working OK since I heard from the speakers that windows did load up. So maybe a modded bios will do the trick.
    Its beyond my abilities so, I will stick to the 2700m for the moment.
    The custom heatsing was a disaster. I couldn't transfer heat from the gpu to the fan, so the card had only passive cooling and kept reaching shutdown temparature pretty easy. Thats a no go then.

    Lastly, a pair of good thermal pads from mxm upgrade and an diamond mc 4 thermal, were enough to have the lower lid closed and use the laptop for everyday usage (internet, browsing, encodind, youtubing and movies).
    Gaming without the cooling pad is a no go.

    So far these are my news.

    Next on the menu is an psu upgrade to 150watt and an quadro FX 3700m. If this is ok, next a screen upgrade to a full HD LED replacement.

    Here's a new BIOS, which doesn't lock the EIST.

    I took the BIOS file from rped ( 2nd thread), which is BIOS 1.21 with VTx & SLIC21, and prevented EIST lock.

    It does *not* open up any non-standard BIOS options.

    I haven't tested the SLIC, but I assume it works.

    Some technical info:
    Windows modding tool: Tool to Insert/Replace SLIC in Phoenix / Insyde / Dell / EFI BIOSes
    Instructions: http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...ida-both-cores-core-2-duo-26.html#post7084949

    I unlocked the EIST in file F7731B4C-58A2-4DF4-8980-5645D39ECE58_0_169.DASM, in these 2 locations:

    • 0000293C 480FBAE814 bts rax,0x14
    • 00003D18 480FBAE814 bts rax,0x14

    EIST lock is bit 20 of MSR 0x1a0, which the normal BIOS annoyingly sets to 1, which prevents EIST from being toggled on/off.

    EIST toggle is bit 16 of same MSR.

    Now, with this modded BIOS, this works in Linux, to turn off EIST:

    Code:
    $ rdmsr -p0 0x1a0
    364850489
    # 4 (instead of 5) to disable EIST, on a Core 2 Duo
    $ wrmsr -a 0x1a0 0x364840489
    An example, to undervolt:

    Code:
    wrmsr -a 0x199 0x491a

    Hello All,

    I have an 8930-6386 (2.53 GHz, 1680x945 screen). It can charge the original battery, but not two replacements that I have tried. Has anyone successfully replaced the original battery (14.8V, 4800mAH, 71Wh, AS07B42)?

    JohnBrown105,

    I have the 8930G-7665 2.0 GHz quad core Q9000 with 1920x1080 screen and have no problems with any of the batteries listed below:

    Generic, AS07B72, 14.8V 4400 mAH, 65Wh &
    Acer, AS07B72, 14.8V 4800 mAH,
    Acer, AS07B32, 14.8V 4800 mAH

    All of these are 8-cell batteries, the lower voltage 6-cell won't work, the key is voltage (after form factor) at 14.x volts. There are a few more models that will work, but many more that won't but will fit.

    Other upgrades I've done include the 750GB Seagate 7200RPM hybrid drive (#1 recommended upgrade - SSD speed, HD storage) + 1TB 5200RPM + 6 GB RAM.

    I have not messed with video upgrade (I'm using the 9700M with updated video drivers to utlize the CUDA processors), but contemplating CPU replacement as 2 of the 4 temperature sensors have malfunctioned causing heavy computing issues where I have the throttle down the CPU to prevent overheat shutdown. I am also considering the BIOS upgrade that was posted in

    brebs,

    Thanks for posting this version of the BIOS. What other versions of the BIOS do you have? I am assuming this version will run virtual machine. Will it also work on the Quad Core Q9000?

    Has anyone tried the version that brebs posted? I usually lurk and wait to hear from other people's experience, but like the prospect of undervolting my CPU for the above stated reason.

    Just what can be googled. What do you want?

    Yes. I run qemu, in Linux.

    I don't see why not. The DSDT contains entries for 4 CPUs:

    Code:
        Scope (_PR)
        {
            Processor (CPU0, 0x01, 0x00000410, 0x06) {}
            Processor (CPU1, 0x02, 0x00000410, 0x06) {}
            Processor (CPU2, 0x03, 0x00000410, 0x06) {}
            Processor (CPU3, 0x04, 0x00000410, 0x06) {}
        }
    I have ;) But just me, AFAIK, so far.

    My T9400 CPU (dual-core) normally also gets throttled, when both cores are fully utilized for a few minutes.

    What seems to be working nicely so far (I'm still working on it), is:

    Code:
    # Disable SLFM (changing 9 to 8)
    wrmsr 0xee 0x8eb91000

    # Preparation - ensure that EIST is enabled (the 5)
    wrmsr 0x1a0 0x364850489

    # Reset to a low value
    wrmsr -a 0x199 0x619

    # Undervolt at a reasonable non-optimal speed, to stay under the thermal throttling limit
    # 8 is the speed (9 is usual, a is IDA (turbo). 18 is the voltage. These are in hexadecimal.
    wrmsr -a 0x199 0x818
    I use a USB laptop cooler which sits under the laptop - it had 2 fans, but all the heat in the 8930g is in the left-hand side (video card & CPU), so I just disconnected the cooler's right-hand-side fan, to reduce fan noise.

    A great trick to increase airflow substantially is to hack away the 8930g case's plastic fan grate (I used a pair of scissors). Yes, this makes a hole in the case's underside, but it really works :cool:

    I am long-overdue for attempting to re-apply the thermal paste on both the CPU and video card.

    The thermal throttling seems to be triggered by TM2, but I haven't been able to influence it. This becomes more evident when the thermal interrupts are enabled, with "wrmsr -a 0x19b 0xffff1f". The thermal readout seems to get stuck ("rdmsr 0x19c -f 22:16") :(

    brebs,

    Thanks for the quick reply. I predominately use my machine for HD video processing, and have balanced the GPU and CPU in Sony Vegas and get HD frame-rates in near real time, as long as I can get about 75% utilization on each, it rocks, however, if the CPU climbs above it I have to use Throttlestop to enforce more aggressive throttling (the opposite of its intended function of overclocking) based on thermal profiling to prevent the CPU from shutting itself down.

    btw, do you know of a program that actually works where I can manually force the fan to maximum to slow the heat-build up so that it can cope?

    I am using win7-64 home premium.

    If I am in a rush to process a long video, I will completely remove the underside cover, and place the machine on a A/C register with fan turned to 'on' (not auto -- then no throttling is needed) to complete the job 25-33% faster.

    You should definitely be undervolting the CPU, for starters.

    I have not found a way to control the fan (I only use Linux) - I've tried changing CPU MSRs in countless combinations, and also the Nvidia settings. However, I don't believe it would help, because a 100% fan is still overwhelmed by a 100% CPU and 100% video card.

    So, currently I throttle the video card (Nvidia 9700M GT), using this script (in Linux):

    Code:
    #!/bin/bash

    temperature() {
    	# https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA
    	# Also:  nvidia-smi -a | grep Gpu  and  nvclock -T
    	# nvidia-smi -q -d TEMPERATURE | grep Gpu | cut -d: -f2 | cut -d' ' -f2
    	/usr/bin/nvidia-settings -q gpucoretemp -t
    }

    throttle() {
    	echo "In throttle"
    	s=20
    	while true ; do
    		t=`temperature`

    		# To see what speeds are supported:
    		# nvidia-settings -q GPUPerfModes -t

    		if [[ $t -ge 100 ]] ; then
    			# Lowest possible
    			pspeed=169
    			mspeed=100
    			s=5
    		elif [[ $t -ge 96 ]] ; then
    			pspeed=275
    			mspeed=300
    			s=10
    		elif [[ $t -ge 93 ]] ; then
    			pspeed=400
    			mspeed=300
    			s=10
    		else
    			# No throttle
    			resetSpeeds
    			s=15
    			if [[ $t -lt 77 ]] ; then
    				# Can go back to normal relaxed mode
    				applySpeeds
    				return
    			fi
    		fi
    		echo "t=$t pspeed=$pspeed mspeed=$mspeed"
    		applySpeeds
    		sleep $s
    	done
    }

    resetSpeeds() {
    	pspeed=575
    	mspeed=800
    }

    applySpeeds() {
    	if [[ $pspeed -ne $appliedPSpeed ]] ; then
    		/usr/bin/nvidia-settings -a GPU3DClockFreqs=${pspeed},${mspeed} # > /dev/null
    		appliedPSpeed=$pspeed
    	fi
    }

    # Start
    renice -n 1 -p $$ > /dev/null

    if [[ -z $DISPLAY ]] ; then
    	# For nvidia-settings
    	export DISPLAY=":0.0"
    fi

    # Enable clock changing
    nvidia-settings -a GPUOverclockingState=1 > /dev/null
    resetSpeeds
    appliedPSpeed=-100
    applySpeeds

    while true ; do
    	t=`temperature`

    	if [[ $t -ge 80 ]] ; then
    		throttle
    	fi
    	sleep 40
    done

    Hi everyone,

    I have a quite strange problem with my 8930G (Intel Core 2 P8400, 4Gb RAM, 320Gb HDD, Geforce 9600M GT): it suddenly turns off (as if the power cable was unplugged) and restart, while loading the OS. I've tried to remove RAM modules (using only one at a time), and to remove the hdd and start from a live distro on pendrive, but the problem is not related to these components. Instead, after the motherboard warms up, the problem does not appear anymore (indeed, I also tried to let the pc cool down, then warm it up with the hairdryer). I really do not have any idea about which component might be faulty.

    Also, it is not an OS fault, since I tried booting both Windows and Linux.

    Does the machine stay up if you just stay within a BIOS menu?

    I recently had to change the PSU, because its output was not steady. That made the motherboard produce a quiet clicking sound about every 2 seconds, IIRC.

    I have not tried it, but if I leave it hanging on GRUB boot menu, it stays up (and the fan is always on). Even if I run memtest86 from GRUB list, it completes the test without powering off. I had problems with power supply some time ago, but the notebook powered down WITHOUT restarting, so this time I think it could be something else. Also, I do not hear any clicking sound from the notebook.

    I was wondering if there's some way to do manual hardware probing (that is, manually enable devices over PCI and USB bus) in order to identify the device that causes hardware failure.
