Hey guys, just got one of these for a bargain price. But im having a couple of issues with it. The hard drive seems to be painfully slow. its only a 5400rpm seagate drive, but it seems to be incredibly slow at times, even for a 5400rpm drive.

When recovering from sleep mode, after clicking my username to get back to desktop, the screen stays blank...

Im having problems with World of Warcraft making my screen go blank. After starting the game, the screen will randomly go blank, and my system will lock up, but I can still hear the game running in the background.
When connected to an external monitor, I can see that the screen is losing signal. I have a strong feeling this is linked to the problem im having with the hard drive, because on the odd occasion that I've gotten the hard drive to load at the proper speed, the game seems to run fine...
I have the proper intel sata drivers installed. when the issue occures, crystaldiskmark takes a very long time to initialise and shows a read speed for around 18-20mb/s. When the drive works normally, it shows around 80mb/s. No idea what is happening here, but I plan to buy an SSD in the near future.

    any ideas?

Won't this have no effect tho, as having an external screen connected via HDMI shows no signal after the issue occurs?

try replacing that hard drive and best graphics Card I have heard is a fx3700m HP model

    I have :
    * Intel X9100 E0
    * Nvidia 9700M GT
    * 1TB HD (Sata 6 so speeds are okay in sata 3 mode)
    * 4 GB DDR3 1066 Mhz (I will stick a new RAM 4 GB + 2 GB , to have total 6GB).

This is what I have just need to get a new inverter as mines making the backlight fail and a SSD in the other bay as a boost.

take a second HDD for storage the SSD you have should be good unless its one of the riginal ones.

has to be the HP Quadro FX 3700m to work its equivalent to a gtx 280m

What do you mean with the meaning of the Original Ones ? Its a Kingston SSD 64 GB.

Also about the graphics card.Great! It's really good the similarity to the GTX 280M.

    And final question ..

I changed the Thermal Paste to Arctic Cooling Silver 5, of the GPU/CPU , and when i play the minecraft in easy settings and low ,the temperature is going of the hook higher than 75 celsius and the laptop ,shuts down ..... i have cooler master u3 notepal also with 3 fans blowing the left side of the laptop and... the temperature is again TOO HIGH....

    Any thoughts;;; Did any thermal pad missing or something;;;

    Hi friends!
I tried to upgrade my Acer 8930G which had theP7350 (2Ghz, 1066Mhz FSB) with the T9900 (3.06Ghz, 1066Mhz). After upgrading I have the same results in CPU-z and in performace - just the experienc index of windows show in CPU 5.6, a little better than the 5 which was with P7350. At the Performance Test 8.0 results are same very bad. And more strange the CPU-z show for both the same results: Pated FSB 1064, Bus speed 266, multiplier X3, core speed 798 (only!).
I want ask, that means that my computer works in both prossessors like with a 800Mhz prossessor? But why window shows that now it is a liitle better (5.5 against 5) . And what I can do to get the right performance to my laptop. I read maybe to change mobo battery which is very difficult on 8930G? I have already upgrade the BIOS to the latest version.
    Please help..

How did you put the thermal paste on the CPU/GPU chips? You should put the thermal paste as thinner as possible to ensure better thermal conductivity from the CPU/GPU to heat sink.

Upgrading the GPU requires some more parts to be replaced.

Needs a new power jack to handle the power demand.
Also a lagrer psu 120, 135 or maybe 150 Watt.
Not to menion the largest Heat sink (which you allready have).

The FX 2700m(equivalent to 9700m GTS) is a good replacement (needs at least a 120 watt psu) and plays many games a lot better than the 9700m GT (48 vs 32 cores, 256bit vs 128bit MEMORY BUS Width) and the current cooling system is capable to keep it under shutting temparature ( <95 degrees) but you lose VGA and HDMI output.

The FX 3700m is a lot more powerfull but I it is an unconfirmed success.

Also FX 3600m might be a good solution but their HP bios is not showing anything on screen. Perhaps a blind flash with a Dell bios or a 8800m GTS one.......

75 degrees is not a shutdown point. Perhaps replacing the thermal pad of your Northbridge (it is with the CPU heatsink) with a better one or check how well it sits on the chip.

    Thank you for the information.

But with the 9700GT i can't even play Minecraft without shutting down the computer in 30 minutes.

Hey I have a similar problem with my 9700m, but that's because I'm still using the old 9650m heatsink.

Maybe if you post some pictures for us of the inside of your laptop we can spot where you went wrong.

Here is a modded bios based on the .10 version of the HP Quadro FX 3700m.

It has lower voltages on performance mode and lesser clocks for less heat and more stability.

I use this till today with NO BLUE screens and erros AT ALL!!!!

Use it at your own risk.

    Ok then.

Long story, short. For any upgrade you will need the bigger heatsink and underneath bracket.

Direct replacement is the Nvidia Geforce 9700m GT which has fully suppoted drivers.

Going to a higher gpu requires a better PSU (120 - 150 watt)
and a thicker tip power jack ( 1,5mm to 2.5mm)

Another upgrade is the quadro FX 2700m which is a little better than 9700 with 50% more CUDA proccessors but you lose HDMI and VGA out.

Lastly is the higher possible upgarde to the quadro FX 3700m but requires all the above and a vbios I am currently using for stability.

    Hope I Helped you :)

    You are welcome.

Anyone cares to share any info consudering the screen upgrade?

My first attempt failed. I had no brightness control and the screen was very dark. I used the two lamp cable ans inverter from the acer official dealer. The screen was from ebay because the dealer didn't have any in stock.

Also there is a led screen replacement on ebay but I belive it also requires another screen cable which the seller doesn't know anything about.

I have done screen conversions for other laptops with success but screen had its own ccfl to led conversion cable.

On a new note I reinstalled windows.

The launch manager is really playing up. I just installed it and everytime I hit play on media panel or with headset with a play button.

Launch manager will then open my media player. If its open and im playing a game or something and hit it when its already open it switches out of the program too it.

I have a single lamp inverter (the original with the laptop) and a second one (the dual lamp) I got from the dealer to make the screen upgrade. I tried a Hitachi screen and I was also stuck to the lowest brightens setting and changing it made no difference.

I saw there are many manufactures so it is a bit shot in the dark.

yeah just bought an official one i kow its say TDK on my inverter like my dead one. The screen im using is a chi mei if i am correct.

Can you do me a favour and test what launch manager your using cause like i said its main screening my media player in any apps when i hit play and forcing me to exit fullscreen mode.
its also opening the program when its closed.

Nvm Found it. Regedit in HK Local Machine,Wow6432Node,Inventec,Lmanager.

I also edited the colour hexidecimal code in regedit so instead of the OSD bein Green during Volume adjustment its now Blue. Though it gets read backwards in registry. I entered the hex code for Blue which is 0000FF it came out red lol. So tried FF0000 and it came out blue.

Gonna tweak it around and see if a bright orange gets me a more visible Cyan.

    Hello all,

I am interested in adding a 3rd drive in the mini-PCIe slot like the one found here since most of our machines has an open slot: Amazon.com: MyDigitalSSD 50mm Bullet Proof 4 BP4 50mm mSATA Solid State Drive SSD SATA III 6G (240GB)(256GB): Computers & Accessories (or similar drive) granted the SATA III interface it too fast, but these devices should be able to slow down to the speed of our machines.

Han anyone successfully installed one, and if you have, can you boot with it or only use it as a temp/cache to speed up your machine? This was I can upgrade the other drives to make more room for HD video processing.

Nice work. I just made a fresh install if windows and decided to go for 8.1. Tried to round up the drivers and go past the unsighed drivers of tje quadro but now I dont have a programme for my tv tuner.
8.1 heavier edition didn't cone with media center so I am at a halt.

Since I can remember, media console play didn't do anything. The ehome button was launching media center before and YES it did made me lose full screen on any program.

For some reason my fan keeps powering off and doesn't start again. I blame the acfancontrol so I did a full install on windows because I wasn't sure what the problem was.

I will keep an eye on it.

Hi folks I was hoping someone could help me with my Acer 8930G. I have 3 possible issues and I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction or provide any assistance where possible. (1) The PC is no longer keeping the correct time and I believe that it maybe the CMOS battery that may be failing. I think replacement of this is not easy requiring disassemby. I am pretty competent but would like some advice on how difficult this is to perform. (2) the power jack is giving some problems, once again I think this is a known problem with the situation of this and flexing on the hinge/screen. I have done a temporary solder job but will replace the full jack. Is this a difficult process and could this be tackled the same time as the CMOS battery? and finally (3) the system make a noise when I switch it off. difficult to describe what this is like, loss of power tic.. I'd be greatful for any advice offered...thank you JD..

    jdoherty,

1 & 2 may be related. For item 2, the jack is not the issue, the wire connected to the power jack is the issue as it fatigues and eventually breaks (they have two black wires connected. You will need some de-soldering wick to remove the broken off piece of wire in the jack's lug, strip and tin the existing wire, and then reconnect to the jack after bending a slight hook in the tinned wire. I've performed this repair 3 times in the last five years as it is a poor design (in this area only). I use the beast every day and has performed well over the last half a decade. This repair doesn't require removing the back cover, just the cover to the power jack.

For item 3, I don't know from your description, do you have an audio recording?

A very useful resource is the service manual, search Google with the following: "Aspire 8930 Series Service Guide" filetype: pdf for detailed parts lists, diagnostics, disassemble instructions, part numbers, etc.

(remove the space between the " :" and " p" the forum puts a weird face ( :p ) in it if I put it together.)

Thanks jgenemans I appreciate your response, I’ve repaired the wire as you mentioned, but I had to join 2 bits of wire as the existing wire was short and tight (I soldered these). It seems to work okay so I don’t understand how this would be related to the time being incorrect. I thought the CMOS battery just had a lifespan (say 3-5yrs) my beast is 6 years old now, that’s why I thought it was the CMOS battery. I thought the CMOS battery (was not rechargeable) and kept a note of the date and time among other parameters. Mind you when the laptop is powered up it still appears to lose time which concerns me as I thought once power was applied that it would then be able to use mains power to keep the date/time in sync.

I don’t have audio recording, just when it powers off it makes a little sound. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. I’m more concerned about 1 & 2..

Do you suggest that I de-solder again and try re-joining again? Are you thinking that if it’s not right this maybe the problem?

    Appreciate your comments and assistance..

With the wires arcing (albiet in minature prior to your repair) it could possibly wreak havoc with the time, but since it has been re-soldered it shouldn't. Also if plugged into the mains, it should keep correct time. A work-a-round is to use a time sync program to keep the time in sync such as Thinking Man Software - Dimension 4 v5.3 Screen Shots (free for personal use) which I used on my previous laptop with a similar issue -- it was more of an annoyance than an issue to be concerned with. A quick question though, for every hour that it is on does it loose time consistently, if so how much?

With regards to re-soldering the wires, my motto is "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Keep in mind our laptops are beyond their design life (currently 2 to 5 years).

My previous laptop with the time issue is still in operational condition, an Acer Aspire 1710 series and it has a dead CMOS battery, (I only use it with obsolete 8-bit software that I use to program ancient electronics) as the 64-bit O/S isn't that far backwards compatible on the 8930 windows 7 home premium 64-bit. As long as the main battery is good, there is no issue. If it is removed and not connected to the mains, when booting up again, it will loose the time, but will boot normally otherwise (albeit it will take an extra few seconds), and the other settings remain intact, the aforementioned program once connected to the Internet will sync the correct time for it. It uses Windows XP-SP3.

Just installed a FX 2700m card from HP 8730w into my 8930g, and it works brilliantly. Used the stock cooler and made a bracket to attach it to the gpu. Put some stick on heat-sinks on the ram...awesome.
If you have done the FX 3700m install, What did you do for cooling?
All I need now is to upgrade the CPU to a T9900

It works like a charm. Mo mods at all, except from the drivers.

Only downside is that Both VGA and HDMI didn't work for me.

My 3700m gets too hot indeed
I always have the laptop on a coolermaster U3 pad. The three fan do an amazing job.

When I don't have it on a pad, on startup Nvidia inspector autostarts a clock profile that sets 383MHz core, 301MHz ram and 767MHz shader. At these acfan conocks I can browse, watch movies, facebook, downloading, youtube-ing etc,
with no problem and the card is at 58 degrees max. On the colling pad, it never gets above 48.

When I want to game, a shortcut restores the clocks to its origilal settings, I manually speed up the fan to max speed with Acfan control.

Onother problem is that the bios doesn't detect the GPU thermal sensor so I never revs up when needed.
That job can be done by ACfan control with some modding to its ini file, though I need some help with it some more.

Here is my set up, and also a gaming profile that helps my X9100 to keep cool so the GPU won't be affected by the hot CPU.

Notice the sensors on the ACfan utility.

It is actually CPU and propably Northbridge (I think....)

How do you get this program to work? Not much info on it. Is there any other programs that will control the fan speed? It is what I have been looking for, fans need to run better.

From what I could find is that 153 is the byte that controls the fan speed. Giving it values from 1 to 6 modifies the speed. The problem is that it doesn't maintain that speed forever and after some time it drops to 0 rpm.

Then again manually set it to 6 and keep doing it.

Also values 156 and 157 give the temparatures of the cpu (or socket) and 158 and 159 give the temparatures of the GPU.

I have't found any other method of controling the fan. The fan in this laptop is very lazy. I even had problem with the 9700m GT. It was overheating and shut down the system if I didn't have the laptop on my cooling pad.

Hi Guys, I've not long acquired an 8930g, loving the look and feel of it, after replacing the Motherboard because it was knackered and then replacing the graphics card because the 9600 had a blown capacitor and got knows what else... so I went out and purchased from eBay a 9700 512mb card...

I've plugged it in and it all works perfect! :)

I do have an issue though.... where the hell am I to get a heat sink/bracket from for it? Is there some sort of special secret I don't know where a heatsink assembly from another laptop fits or something? If I search on eBay for 8930g Heat sink all that comes up is the original 9600 version...

Any help is much appreciated as I cant use it currently because it'll overheat and potentially damage a fully working card!

    Cheers, Adam.

When I put the fx 200m in, I had the support bracket still on the back of the card. I used the stock graphics heatsink on the card with thermal paste and cut a small strip of steel from an old hard drive caddy, drilled 2 small holes to match up with the cross pattern on the bracket. I used insulating tape on the strip and found 2 screws to work in the bracket and strapped the sink on

I would love to see some pictures from your project.
By the way I saw on ebay the mxm III heatsink for our 8930g.

Also I will post a working ini for the acer fan control utility.
I manage to make it work somehow, though I would like someone else to give it a try.

These are my settings for the programme. After 50 degrees the programme keeps writing to the emmeded controller the value 6 so the fan is always at maximum speed. Anyone willing to test, please use at your own risk, but any comments are welcome :D

P.S. drmsolds does your fx2700m supports VGA out or HDMI out?
Mine had only nvidia digital audio output but where am I suppose to hook it up?
