    Hi,

Do you continue using that configuration (specially the QX9300) with no troubles of overheating or other issues? I have read that the maximum power of the QX9300 is greater than the original one. I have a P8600 now. Can I upgrade the CPU? I am really in love with this laptop.

    Regards

Hi, I have a 8930G, where a BIOS update went wrong. Now the laptop starts but there is no POST screen, just a black screen with fans at max. Also laptop turns on on its own when power cord is connected.
The laptop apparently reads the crisis cd I made for a moment, but nothing happens, even when I left it for a good 10 minutes.
Is there something like a clamp programmer so I can program the chip directly? Or is the laptop dead?

Sounds like nice machine, mine won't take the Q chips, I've tried.. and now it has a few problems, battery drain when turned off and random shutdowns

    - What Q chips?
    - battery drain it's a firmware bios problem, i read something about that on another thread
update your bios and you will be fine.
    - about random shutdowns i don't know nothing about that...

Hi, yes Quad core chips Q9000, Q9100 etc

My Bios is latest version but I will flash again when I have fixed the shutdown issue, which I think is the decoupling capacitor (Nec Tokin) behind CPU, this could also cause the power drain I think, have to do that at weekend

since have so many "8930G" differents specs and some can handle and anothers not, i don't undersand this anymore.
anyway i use this bios modded: Acer_Aspire_8930G_VT_Slic21_7Menu_EIST

and work fine, but i need to try "Q" processors to be sure because of the compatibility xD

Whether your 8930g can take a quad core is down to motherboard revisions. MB.ASZ0B.004 can take a quad core but MB.ASZ0B.001 cannot. This is posted earlier in this huuuuge thread but this saves you looking through the whole thing hehe :)
The motherboard number should be printed on the board just next to the CPU slot I believe.

Yes, I've just got schematic for both boards, seems the 004 has a different chipset, it also allows 8GB ram not 6GB

I have now repaired my random shutdown issue, I was right it was the decoupling capacitors on the CPU, runs much cooler now and I have also swapped to a T7500 CPU

    that's right!

Mine is MB.ASZ0B.001 and work's with intel x9100 with overclock (but don't boot with 8GB Ram)
in the future i will test with intel Q9300 if works...

like i see, all motherboards (MB.ASZ0B.001, MB.ASZ0B.002, MB.ASZ0B.004, etc...) are the same, only thing they change is chipset and capacitors and maybe graphic card too they can handle :D

I was wondering if you guys would have an answer for a problem that I recently encountered. I have recently bought a Nvidia GTX 1050 ti along with a EXP GDC Express Card External GPU base and a corsair CX650M 650 watt power supply (to power the external 1050 ti card) to use with my Acer Aspire 8930g. Unfortunately in order to fully utilize an external GPU with this laptop it requires a UEFI Bios with a Legacy mode toggle option which is not available in the stock insydeh2o bios 1.20 and 1.21 vt mod versions that was provided here.

A Bios mod that enables these modes would be a life saver for me. I was hoping if there was a modded bios that enabled the Boot mode feature for the 8930g?

    Thanks.

    Hi all,

I have had this laptop since forever and I'm now looking into upgrading it for the first time ever (besides the SanDisk 250GB SSD I bought for the spare slot). I'm not ready to give up on it yet!

Does anybody have any advice for a complete newbie on what I need to know before I start digging through this post to self teach myself how to do it?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

I sold mine a few years back . I can tell you that the motherboards are definitely different. Only the 004 revision came with quad cores which is why it supports it. Chipset changes are a big thing.
And yes most of these models only support 6GB ram tops.
I had a x9100 CPU and 6GB ram back when i owned it.

Sure the 9600GS/GT card and 9700GT card use different heatsinks
the best card you can get if you have a 9600 heatsink is the GT240M if im correct.

The best GPU you can get if you have a 9700GT heatsink is the Quadro 3700M(needs to be a HP model) which is the equivalent to a GTX 280M it can also be reflashed to a 280

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/QTY-1x-Nvi...345229?hash=item25f0c6b8cd:g:7YEAAOSwWSZarxPi
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/ACER-60-AP...32V0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357079892&sr=8-1

The more powerful Quadro/9700GT require a 120W power supply. also heres abetter bios for it http://forum.notebookreview.com/attachments/v2fx3700mv10-zip.107139/

When i ran a x9100 and 9700GT it could OC the cpu to 3.5 stable on a 90W supply. It required undervolting of the cpu or battery would drain under load until i got the 120w

If you have the 900P screen model and want a 1080p display it also requires a dual lamp inverter.

But yes the x9100 CPU is recommended or if you MB says 0004 on it you can get quad cores

Hmm sold it 5 years ago

Greetings, I'm having a spot of bother with my 8930g, the random reboots, it's already taken it's toll on my SSD, looking under the memory for the motherboard model it would appear that, "none of the above" is the model number to purchase a replacement. Ten years I've had this beast and I'd like to keep using it as a back up. Any information to get me back up and running greatly appreciated.

Hey guys sorry to awaken this thread, I'm very late to the party. I upgraded my old Acer Asprice 8390G from T5800 to T9600 alongside 6gb ram, 120gb ssd boot and 320gb HDD storage. It boots fine and seems noticeably quicker. I ran Prime95 on it and no crashes. Only thing that was strange is that the CPU temperature doesn't show properly in HWmonitor. It stays at min 3°C and Max 18° but I can hear the fan loud and think this is wrong. What do you think, am I risking breaking it with this 45nm processor instead of the original 65nm?

you tried using other software its weird your temps are showing weird
and using a 45nm is fine certain configs came with a p8600 which is 45nm but the motherboards the same.
either your windows or the cpu has a fault if temps not detecting

Hi, I think that is almost impossible, but is there any way to swap the motherboard to a more recent one compatible with connectors and that can be placed replacing the original? I love this laptop.

Hello experts. I have a very big problem. Just update with some sort of a 1.21 bios update, and my old 8930G just passed away. The lateral blue lights are on, but the computer won't start anymore. Is there any way to get it from the deaths? I am thinking in buy an interface that can write the Bios Chip on the motherboard and try to rewrite the bios file inside the Bios. It will be possible?

Bought one of these and waiting to arrive. How can I determine if it's the quad core variant or the dual core variant without opening it? (as in disassembling it) Seller has posted a few photos with the specs and I see a T6400 CPU but that doesn't really say anything.

Otherwise, how good should I expect the TUBA bass be after all those years? I remember my 2x 6930Gs had issues with the subwoofer membranes being brittle, until I swapped one of them (9600M GT 512, T9400, 6GB DDR2, 1TB+500GB) with a different one from a old and long dead 6530G, and it looked very different to what the other 6930G used.

I had one of these very recently, a T6400 is a dual core, the TUBA bass is usually strong on these, but if you have any audio crackling like I did it will be either worn out speakers or the driver, I have my old driver if you'd need it, let me know, also 6gb ram max on dual core board.

Also under the ram cover there's a sticker under the ram, if it ends in 004 then it will allow a quad core upgrade

Wish I'd be that lucky lol, it's a 001. Just stuck a P7350 in place of the T6400, added a 250GB HDD along the WD5000BPVT it came with, and so far so good. Need to look into a battery tho, the AS07B42 it came with seems to be on its last legs, it discharges in about 5-10 minutes.

Came with a 1680x945 panel btw, but manually set it to 1920x1080 through the NVIDIA Control Panel.

    Hi everyone
I recently joined the forum as i came across a bargain Acer Aspire 8930g (T9550, 9700m) that i bought, i used to have this notebook and i loved it so much
I saw this GPU listed for sale the other day
    [IMG]
    It's a GTX280M M57TU N10E-GTX1 V1.0 1GB DDR3
    What do you think?
Will it work on 8930g + 135w power supply?

8930G is Core 2 Duo + SATA II only, and Core 2 Quad for boards marked with MB.ASZ0B.004. No Arrandale mobos, only Penryn and Merom although I don't see why would you drop a Merom in there.

Hi There. I have the ATI hd4650 card too and whilst it works perfectly in my Acer 8730. When i put it in my Acer 8930. It would come on then instantly shutdown. May i ask if you have a special bios version for 8930 or any other info that might help me. the 8930 works with nvidia 9600M GT. The current card installed. Thank you in advance for any advice. Best Regards, Colin

Not any I wouldn't know of. One thing I know is mine came from an previously dead 6930G (bad mobo) that eventually got restored with an 9600M GS. That card works on most machines I've tried - 5720G, 5920G, 6920G, 6930G (obviously), and my 8930G which now runs a DDR3 based 9600M GT, but other than that I don't know any differences that there would be BIOS wise.

What I can highly suggest is taping the main chip in such way that you only have the GPU die exposed, as well as taping the backside so it doesn't short out, leaving only the holes for the heatsink mounting. The reason your 8930G might shut down that fast is that the card is probably shorting out against the heatsink mounts that are used on the 6920/6935/8920/8930 machines. Basically insulate most of the card's backside and most of the GPU's die surroundings on the top side.

    • Hi, Thanks for the reply and some interesting hints re the ati card. Just out of interest. it wouldn't be due to there being 2 versions of the motherboard. the 001 and the 004, The 004 , which i believe, is the only one that will support quad core cpu's. I will try your suggestion re taping die surroundings etc and let you know. But sounds a positive suggestion even before i try it. Best Regards, Colin

Have you tried running the laptop again without the culprit battery? As in, no battery and DC plugged in.

Is it one of those "replacement" chinese batteries? Those are known to be wonky at best (except the extended ones which are actually decent.) so you should try an original AS07B32 or AS07B42. Original batteries usually have an barcode sticker that reads BT followed by a bunch of numbers.
