    Acer Aspire 8930G big problem.

    Hello everyone. New guy here.

    I have a serious problem with my 3 year old Acer Aspire 8930G. Whenever I press the power button, it will indicate that it has turned on and then approximately 5 seconds later, the power light will go out and then it will turn back on again a few seconds later. I do not get a picture from the LCD at all. It just stays blank. I have tried switching it on with the PSU connected and with it un-connected. I have not backed up any of my important data onto Removable Media or an External Drive. I do not want to lose any of this data so I am reluctant to return it to Acer. Is there any way to fix this without losing anything.

    Hi Ross and welcome.

    I'm not sure what the answer is to your power issue but I'm sure someone else more knowledgable than I will be along shortly to help.

    Regarding the LCD issue, do you get any picture if you hook the laptop up to an external monitor? If you do then you know the graphics card is ok at least. Did the LCD display show any unusual behaviour before this happened at all (such as the picture being very dim or any distortion in the picture)?

    Regarding saving your data the best way I know is to remove the hard drive and hook it into another pc to backup your data. If you're able to hook the drive into the other pc using SATA to SATA you'll find the transfers much faster than using a SATA to USB hard drive caddy. Removing the hard drive from the 8930G is simply a case of removing the bottom access panel (I count 7 very small cross head screws) and then removing the hard drive. It really is that simple.     How would I go about doing that and what cables would I need. (Sorry, not the best with tech). And no, there was no distortion or the screen being dim. (I turned the brightness down manually shortly before).

    Thank you so much for this piece of information. I have a 1TB external SATA drive which I can back up to. Lastly, thank you for the reply.

    You'll need either a VGA, HDMI or Display Port input on your TV/monitor. Get that cable and then connect the TV/monitor to the laptop using the cable, select the appropriate input on your TV/monitot then power up the laptop. If you get any picture on the TV/monitor that's good news.

    (You'd probably get better advice than mine by posting in the Acer Aspire 8930G Owner's Lounge thread.)

    And come nn the rest of you, I know there's experts out there that could help Ross with his power problem and help diagnose this picture problem, as I'm no expert.

    OK, so I tried connecting it to a TV with and HDMI and VGA and nothing so I'm guessing that it's the graphics card. And I'll post there in just a moment. Also, for a non expert, you seem to know quite a bit.:thumbsup:

    @mjmacnab -Great job in pointing out the owner's thread and the good advice to seek help there. I hope someone like comes to my rescue if ever I have a problem in the future.

    @Ross C -I hope your laptop gets fixed soon and I also hope it isn't the graphics card.

    Sorry to bump this ancient thread but I eventually sent the machine off to a local computer store to get it fixed and it turned out that it was the Motherboard. It cost about £400 and about 4 hours labour. I just thought I'd update the thread so that other people can refer to it.

    Some of the Relays had fused and caused it to malfunction.
