why do you say that ??
are you in Grenada? -

Why start an 'Owner's Lounge' thread, if you don't actually own the notebook?
I agree, this notebook may not see U.S. shores for some time to come, if at all.....
I have since lost interest in this notebook..... something better is coming to the U.S., Q1 2010!

it not a thread just about ownership but everything leading up to it. Now just because you lost interest, dont hate -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
My, my..... normally as the name implies, an 'Owner' starts such a thread..... whereby an 'Owner' has control of the first (No# 1) post..... to post and edit, model specific links, updates, important info, developments, and such. So I hope you will become an owner, or plan continue support of the owners, thereof. Otherwise, I am merely suggesting you allow an 'Owner' to be the first to open an 'Owner's' thread..... out of respect of said Owners.
As far as " everything leading up to it", several post related to this ( yet released) model already existed well prior to you beginning this thread. It just seems you would have continued the dialogue within one of them..... that's all.
Anyhow, I have decided to forego my purchase of the Acer 8942 (in lieu of another), but I have not entirely lost interest here (poor choice of words in my previous post, above). With the new technologies being offered, I am certain this will be exciting for all who purchase this notebook, and I wish the future owners well.
No hate here!

can you share what you are going to purchase?

I placed an order for 8942 please pm me as well on what you will get.

really quiet in this thread. did the 8942 ever come out ???

Hi Everyone!
I am new to the forum, and I joined as I am the happy owner of an 8942G and will provide my first impressions and experiences in this post.
First, I am in Canada, and bought my unit at Staples. They seem to have an exclusive configuration arrangement with Acer, and so far, other then a couple of small independent dealers; I have not seen the 8942G available anywhere else in Canada at this date of posting.
Here is my config, as it is not an i7, I am wondering if I should start a new thread - perhaps the mods or participants can advise - in the interim I will post here.
Model = Acer AS8942G - 5679
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Intel Core i3 330M @2.13 GHz, HM55 Express Chipset
18.4" Acer Cinecrystal LCD 1080P 16 x 9 aspect ratio (max resolution 1920 x 1080)
4 GB DDR 3 1066 MHz Memory (2 x 2), max 8GB
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 w 1 GB of DDR3 Ram
500 GB HD (5400rpm)
Blue Ray Disc (read only)/Super Multi DL combo drive
WLAN Acer Nplify 802.1b/g/n
Acer Crystal Eye HD webcam (up to 720p) with dual microphones
Multi Card Reader
8 cell Li-Ion Battery (71 watt max output 4800 mAh battery)
Ports = 5 USB, HDMI, Esata, VGA, Ethernet, Display, 1394, Line in, Mic, Speakers, Expresscard 54 (also accepts 34 cards), CIR Receiver, RF port.
Fingerprint Reader
120 Watt AC adaptor
Retail Price = $1060 CAD (I actually paid $100 less on an in store one day special)
I knew from researching that the 8942G was released in Europe first, and that I was getting the base config in respect of processor and vid card. But the i7 w/5850 is selling for 1450 pounds in the UK, which is $1500 CAD more then what I paid. Furthermore, I judged I did not need that extra processing power. I did look at the 8940G, but its only availability here was at $1400 without the blue ray, and the 240M video card is not as good as the 5650.
So I was satisfied with the configuration for the price I paid.
First Impressions:
I should have done an unboxing video. However initial bootup and config was quite fast, I would say less then 15 minutes and only 1 reboot.
The display is fantastic. I had an Acer 8735G with the max 945 resolution which I returned as the display was simply not adequate. The 8942G display is lovely, and I watched a blue ray movie, and it I think it was better then my flat screen tv.
Windows Experience Scores after finish of windows config with scale for this machine 1.0 - 7.9.
Processor = 6.2
Memory = 5.9
Graphics = 6.7
Game Graphics = 6.7
Primary Disk = 5.7
I put in an 8 gb Lexar drive into the Expresscard slot and dedicated 4GB to Readyboost (you can only dedicate half the drive max) and reran the experience scores. The Primary Disk Drive score bumped up slightly to 5.8.
It seems to me the only easy paths to improving the scores further would be to get a 7200 rpm drive, and bump up the ram to 6 or 8 GB.
System properties indicate that of my 4GB ram - 3.86 is usable (which also confirms the 64 bit mode).
I am currently conditioning the battery - very important. For those that don't know, it means that after you have charged up the unit, you pull the power plug and let the unit run on battery power until you get the low battery warning, then you charge it up again and repeat 2 more times.
Battery life seems to be very good. I am at over 3 hours and still have 30% of my battery life left and I am running in normal mode, not power saver. BTW, the unit has both a touch button on the LCD panel to turn it off, and the Acer PowerSmart button. I have not used either other then to briefly turn them on and of to confirm they work (they do).
The Acer Media Touch system on this unit with the dial for volume, and touch sensitive controls for the media functions works 1000% better then the system on the 8730 and 8735 models.
The sound is great. No it does not get super super loud, but it is clean all the way to the top volume. I am listening to a whole range of trance/electronic music while typing this and sound is fine (at this exact sec, on deck is Sexy People Mashup by DJ Clive from Mashup International). I may hook up later my Creative Gigaworks T40s and will give some feedback once I have done so and fiddled around with the soundcard features. I thought the bass was fine - the bass tubes at the back of the unit are definitely audible to me.
The touchpad supports all those multi gestures that can be found in Windows 7, which of course I have yet to learn! The touchpad can also be turned off via a small button to the right of the pad.
I love the backlit keyboard, but my one gripe is these new flat key chicklet style keyboards. Honestly they are a real step backwards compared to the normal keys where each key is slightly rounded internally to help catch your fingers when touch-typing.
I am hoping some aftermarket company will soon release a keyboard protector, otherwise I can see lots of dust and junk soon collecting underneath the keys of the keyboard.
The vidcam also works well. Seeing oneself in HD resolution is pretty scary! I made a couple of skype calls, and was told the video and audio quality for the party on the other end was excellent, as good as were I on a headset.
The big oversight on my unit is the lack of bluetooth and also perhaps for some, the omission of the tv tuner. The omission of the bluetooth option is my big gripe, since it only costs the manufacturer about 5 bucks to add it to a unit.
So I will end up getting either a usb or expresscard bluetooth module and tv tuner. They are cheap on Ebay (a mini usb bluetooth can be bought for about $10) and with 5 USB 2.0 ports, there is certainly the room on the 8942G to load up with these peripherals.
This video card is supposed to be able to support multiple monitors, and I know from exploring already, Acer Gridvista allows you to take at least 2 monitors (the display and 1 external) and manipulate the displays so it is as if you have multiple screens. A nice feature for presentations, and it is driving the 2nd monitor at 1080p resolution as well.
I got rid of most of the bloatware and went into MSConfig and confirmed my startup items (unchecking some which I did not want). A cold boot without adjusting anything other then the aforementioned takes approx 75 seconds. I suppose this could be further refined down in MSConfig Boot options but I am happy with that for now.
Well, I think that is enough for this initial posting. Upon thought, I suggest this thread should simply be renamed Acer 8942 eliminating all the processor info, and this post should be left in this thread.
Look forward to everyone's comments and suggestions. -
I am thinking about going to 6 or 8 gig of memory. I checked out the memory, and it is Samsung chips: 2GB PC3-8500s 07-10-F2
My questions are:
1) I can find the occassional 4GB PC3-8500E or ER ram, but none with "s". I would like some help on understanding the difference and if it is important.
2) I have never seen F2 in the timing before. What does that stand for?
Do I need to find a 4 gig chip that matches the "s" in the transfer rate and F2 in the memory timing clock cycle or are these not issues.
Would it be an issue to have mismatched memory, by brand and GB (ie going to 6 GB of ram with a 1x4 and 1x2 chips)?
Finally, the NVidia vid card has 1GB of DDR3 memory, and apparently the system has the ability to share up to 2717MB, but I don't see a way to control the sharing, and perhaps deliberately always dedicate more memory to the video function. Is there a way to specify the video memory shared?
Anyone's help on these matters would be appreciated.
I might add btw that otherwise I have been very happy with this unit over the last couple of days. I have owned 8 notebook computers over the years (maybe even more that was what I could remember) and this unit is by far the best to date. I also much prefer the black finish of this unit to the gray color of the 8730G I returned. However, it is a fingerprint magnet.
I have been unable to find a keyboard protector, a couple of vendors I contacted indicated no one yet makes one for the 8940 series. If anyone knows of one please provide the link. -
Everything looks fine; the only quirk I found for now is the net conenction button (bottom-left corner). Does anyone have knowledge of a fix/hack to disable the feature - while typing sometimes I touch it and I am getting offline. This is a windows question; under linux I fixed it since we have the sources; under win7 is the stupid old close-source issue! Maybe their is a configuration tool to control the ACER extended keyboard! ...
-
-
I looked around for a hack but could not find one. I bet there is a way to disable the key but I have not found it yet. -
By the way, anyone with answers to my questios earlier about memory? Thanks.
-
Hello all.
got my 8942G, with HD5850 gpu.
Ignoring the bloatware etc, I installed my Intel SSD & Win 7 ultimate x64, backing up my drivers first with Driver Magician.
After install I could not restore my GPU driver.
I downloaded a new one from ACER, and that doesn't work either.
What to do? -
Where in the USA can you get these from?
-
-
They got four in, and he was surprised that all of them went straight-away, and they had to hold the final one for me.
Can anyone answer my Q? -
Mine came with:
Bluetooth, N standard wifi, 640GB 5400rpm disk (I added an Intel SSD to that for OS boot), backlit keyboard, ATI HD 5850 1GB, 4GB DDR3 @ 1066MHz, Blue Ray player (very fast for DVDs), 1080p 8ms 18.4" screen, 720p webcam(best I've seen),and six internal speakers (I guess they have the room). I though the flat keyboard might have been a problem, but I'm taking to it very well, surprisingly. However, each time the computer boots, the backlight comes on, which I don't like as I touch-type and never look down anyway.
With the Intel SSD, it proceeded to load Win 7 x64 in a record time for me.
I'm going to drop in my Intel 5300 wireless card (triple antenna), and the top i7 processor within the next few months. If you do the same remember there is no option in the bios to change the CPU multiplier if you plan to overclock. But I knew that before I bought, so no complaints there, other than what a loaded of b0llox it is that Acer can be so restrictive.
If I get any Q's I'll try to answer them...but I'm a busy man... -
so again, anyone bought one of these in the US? I cant find them anywhere

Interesting!! Even with i3 it scored higher (Windows Experience Index) than my Dell. It will be great playing games & working with 18" display. I have an old 17" Acer Aspire 9420 & even though it is an old specification, it still great when watching movies because of the big screen.

I am curious about the ssd drive - did you put it in the second bay? I opened everything up back there, and it appeared to me that the 2nd bay was not usable, although i just glanced at it. If you could post some detail about what you did it would be appreciated. I know one could boot from an expresscard drive as well and that would be superfast as the expresscard is tied right into the processor.
I am loving the machine otherwise, it seems that acer learned some lessons from the 8730/8930/8935/8940 series. The webcam image is fabulous, the dvd/blueray drive works great and I have started fiddling around with ability to support multiple displays. I also have an aver media expresscard tv tuner, and experienced no issues with that. The 1394 port has also been super useful for connecting all my video cameras. The 1080p display is stunning, especially in comparison to the 945 display that acer supplied on the prior models - I watched iron man on blue ray and it was awesome.
I know you posted a question about a problem you were having a problem with your GPU driver - did you get that straightened out?
For anyone interested in all the gazillion options available for that expresscard slot, a great resource I used to obtain some harder to find cards is http://sewelldirect.com/componentsperipherals/expresscard which usually has at least 50 to 60 different types of expresscards on hand. It is amazing what one can do with that slot.
Hopefully we will get a few more 8942G owners and get some action going on this thread! -
Now that I've had it a week, I can say this, they keys are starting to squeak - no joke! The display is more reflective than my Cleve MR570U, to the point were I'm turning off lights in my hotel room. Even the colours are not as good as the Clevo, and I resorted to using the ATI tool to balance them to an acceptable level.
As for the SSD, there was a second bay to add a drive, with SATA2 connections (no funny adapter required), but I did have to fill the excess space with folded paper, as they do not provide the bracket to hold down the other end of the drive like they do with the supplied drive. The Intel drive really gives off no noticable heat however hard you push it.
3DMark06 score was just over 8500, with my Clevo pushing out 9500 ([email protected], 8GB DDR2, 8800M GTX). In the CPU section of Futuremark's test, the Clevo walked away from the 8942G, finishing in about half the time for that section. But then I knew there's no substitue for GHz when it comes to gaming. I expect my upcoming purchase of the 920QXM will see this balanced-out. I just don't want to order it now, as I'm in China, and due to goto the Phillipines soon too, and I don't want to risk some weirdo customs office holding it.
Now I wonder if I can fit my 8800M GTX in this machine....hmm. -

I am curious about the color balancing, can you tell me what you did? I thought the colors were pretty good, but I would like to adjust according to what you did and see if I find it makes any noticeable difference. Right now I have the gammma, brightness and contrast all at the default levels - i thought the colors were pretty good out of the box.
If anyone knows a good color testing utility on download.com they can point me to - Thanks in advance!
I had no expectations that I would be able to blow away all the latest games with the unit - I would need the i5 or i7, plus a 7200 rpm drive, to really max out that, and i am not certain this unit can be upgraded to the higher level chips.
For the price i paid (1k CAD) I am very happy. The machine is on sale at Staples.ca for 1049 CAD at the moment.
BTW, anyone know about the ram questions i posted? going to 6 or 8 gig of ram would be the easiest boost to the machine, but I am having a devil of a time trying to figure out what ram to use. -
I have a big problem with my brand-new Aspire 8942G laptop.
I have set fingertip-login instead of normal win-logon. It was fun until tonight, when my husband tried his finger to log on too much.
The system is asking now for a password in a DOS like screen in blue rectangle, and never asks for my finger again.
My win-logon password does not work. It must be a factory set BIOS password, that I don not knowor heard. It is also not written in my manuals.
Anyway, I cannot start up my Acer laptop anymore. Can somebody help me pleeeease? -
You need to remember which fingers you registered with the program, and try each one fairly slowly. I have since found the left finger I used seems to be detected most of the time.
When I had the problem, the password I used failed also - and I promise you I know what that password is! -
When buying RAM, go for 8GB, and find the lowest 'timings' you can get for DDR3. So you will need 2 x 4GB, at the lowest timings. I know OCZ claim to have DDR3 @ 4-4-4-12 & 1333MHz, but I don't expect you will find that in a mobile module. Let me know what you find, eh? -
No matter how many times I switch off and on again, it never asks for finger-logon. only the DoS like blue rectangle, asking for a password, that I have never set and have no knowledge of.
Very depressing having a brand new shiny black laptop, and now way to start it up. -
LOL, the catalyst control center- - which comes with every acer unit loaded with an ati chip, is of course where i viewed the factory defaults, etc. But it is useful to know that you used another computer for your adjustments. I am going to seek out a utility to help. To my eyes, my screen colors look great so I guess i will do some digging to see what I am missing.
Likewise on the ram, of course 2 x4gb is needed, per my post #15 on this thread.... the issue has been on the timing. If you refer to that post , you will see I noted 2 aspects to the chip timing with which I was not familiar. There are a number of 4gb mobile modules available, but they are not cheap and before I spend the money on 2 of them, I want to nail down the timing issue I noted.
I may just have to roust one of my electrical engineering buddies to give me the timing answer, my major was math, not engineering -but I know any chip designer/engineer would know the answer in a sec. -
Personally I find fingerprint readers on notebooks to still be an iffy technology. For my friends who have sensitive data or info on your computer I suggest they use PGP to encrypt the files, or pgp encrypt the whole drive. PGP is open source, and pretty easy to use. -

There are 2 versions of windows 7: 32 bit Windows 7 and 64 bit Windows 7.
All versions of 32 bit Windows 7 other then "Windows 7 starter" (which is most often found on cheaper netbooks) have a limit of 4GB of physical memory. Windows 7 Starter has a limit of 2GB of physical memory.
A lot of the cheaper notebooks on the market - usually under say $600USD or equivalent, ship with 32 bit Windows 7.
The other version of Windows 7 is 64 bit Windows 7. For 64 bit Windows, there are different maximum physical memory limits depending on which version of 64 bit Windows 7 one has on one's system:
64 bit Windows 7 Starter - 2 GB limit
64 bit Windows 7 Home Basic - 8 GB limit
64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium - 16 GB limit
64 bit Windows 7 Prof & Ultimate - 192 GB limit
The Acer 8942G ships standard with 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium, so the theoretical physical memory maximum for we fewwho own this system is 16 GB!! Unfortunately the system only has 2 ram slots, so the practical limit is 8 GB physical memory (2 x 4GB ram chips).
An increase in ram will almost always be an easy way to modestly speed up one's system and improve system capabilities (for reasons I won't get into here but again are easily researched if you really are interested).
So that's why I want to upgrade the ram!! -
Just a heads up that the 8942G is on sale at staples in Canada for $999 CAD, and I believe can be ordered online as well ( www.staples.ca).

guys i have this laptop and itunes wont sync any devices on it.... im running windows 7 64bit home premium on one partition and windows 7 32bit ultimate on the other....same problem....i looked it up and it sys this chipset has a issue with itunes and that i need to update the bios.... the acer site has no new update...does anyone know where i can find a bios update?? or any solution???
and let me add my specs: i7 720qm 1.6 , 8gb ddr3 , ati mobility radeon hd 5850, hd 1tb, -
Hi,
I have had this laptop now and had the same problem with my iphone. Eventually I found that it works fine with the USB on the left hand side but not the right.
Apart from that the laptop has been great, super fast.
I put in a Corsair NOVA 128GB SSD and formatted the provided western digital drive. It's even better without all the crap ACER software and add on's.
I use it for work and leisure so its regularly on for 10 hours a day. -
im glad to see im not alone on this....one question...did you use itunes 32bit or 64 bit? and if so did you run them in compatibility mode? the laptop las 2 usb's on the left side....which one worked for you? thank you
-
Anybody yet noticed horrible slow-down in their gaming yet?
To the point I will sell this laptop on return to the UK...
Anyway, if you have the same I've found a solution.
Download Bill2's Process Manager: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/Bill2-s-Process-Manager.shtml
And disable Hyper Threading...
Havn't seen it slow down since...
Also, download passmark: http://www.google.co.uk/url?q=http:...MoADAA&usg=AFQjCNHU_yOqaHdwIS5Z07FWWnCUfy30RQ ....and let me know your results!
I hit 1249.5, losing out greatly in the 2D tests, and I've no idea why. I'd like to see if any other similar systems suffer the same, as there are some Dell / Alienware systems with much higher scores due to this one test. Are we back to the limit due to Acer using GDDDR3 instead of GDDR5 again?
I'd appreciate any results guys / gals.... -
-
HI, thanks for the link to the passmark tests. I ran mine (remember I have the i3 processor with the 5650) and my system category scores were:
Overall Passmark Rating: 868 (out of 900)
Overall CPU Mark: 2041.6 (out of 3000)
Overall 2D Graphics: 248.4 (out of 300)
Overall 3D Graphics: 614.1 (out of 700)
Overall Memory Mark: 799.7 (out of 800)
Overall Disc Mark: 346.1 (out of 400)
I went and checked the detailed scores, the graphics card did not do well in the 2D Transparent and Complex Vectors, & Disk Random Seek, but overall, the scores were not bad given the processor, class 2 graphics card and 5400 rpm drive. Given that this is a low power cpu and the aforementioned, the scores seems pretty good. I suspect ddr5 memory might have made a diff on the graphics card, but then I would have been out a lot more money then what I paid.
My config is not a high powered gaming machine, but thats ok, if I allowed myself that luxury I would be divorced in about a week!! -
