The following is an assessment of Acer Aspire 8942G models available for pre-order, as of 11-27-2009.

Presently, I know of no information regarding U.S. distribution, but it only stands to reason this will shortly follow. Question is, how will U.S. models be configured? Looking back at the distribution of Acer's 8940G, the U.S. only received one variant, the Aspire 8940G-6865..... and this was only a base model. Hopefully the U.S. will see a better showing in the 8942G series.

The German models are the only variants currently touting the highly anticipated, ATI Mobility HD 5850 graphics solution, with a complete list of configuration. I have asked the German resellers for confirmation on this, and they assure me the information is correct..... as given to them directly from Acer. I guess we will know the answer to this shortly, as they are soon to be released.

At least pricing, availability, and cofigurations are becoming a little more clear.

    I hope this helps......

    :)

As much as I'd like to believe this I can't help but think that it's a mistake or typo on the resellers part. No way is a 5850 going to be sold as part of the 8942's set-up at those quoted prices anywhere.

Personally keeping a eye on the 8942, as even with the 5650 its a good system for the price offered, and hopefully if the GPU proves to be upgradable I can swap in a 57xx down the line.

Yes, understood...... and to repeat what I said in the original post:

But I am hopeful though, and after doing the math, IMO those prices could feasibly support the 5850. You do realize, none of those prices are U.S.?

Yeah the HD 5850 version costs around $2300 in US prices and could possibly be included in the 8942G.

Yes, agreed, and Acer's pricing structure is always very competitive and reasonable in my view. Just look at Acer's recent Core i7 release, the 8940G-6865..... only $1,349.99 (U.S.)..... very nicely priced indeed!

If I can get further information from our German friends, I may be pre-ordering the 8942G-728G1280TWn (LX.PLU02.029) from them soon.

    :)

Yeah, I did realise it wasn't US dollar, I live in the UK and believe me I'm hopeful as well, would love to get my hands on the (LX.PLU02.029) you mentioned at said price (1734 EUR once you add in German VAT). :D

Just didn't want anyone to get their hopes too high before it's fully confirmed, either via acer or when the system actually becomes available. :)

The prices I listed excludes the 19% VAT tax, because U.S. buyer's will be exempt of this. Since you are in the U.K., please see if you can get anymore info on the U.K. models. It appears to me, that these are presently listing without an optical drive.

You can be our U.K. liaison!

    Thanks!

As much as I want this to be true, it seems far fetched given the current state of TSMC/ATI's 40nm fab yields and their desktop counterpart availability... I guess time will tell :D

Yes, understood! Exciting, isn't it? You are absolutely correct, time will tell..... and SOON! ;)

Here is another German reseller, and they are advertising availability on the 14th of December 2009. Also, here is a Swedish reseller, advertising the 8942G-726G64Bn (LX.PLU02.021), with availability in just 3 to 4 days!

Let's keep our fingers crossed sgogeta4!

A very good question indeed, Rahul!

Thusfar, I have seen nothing. What seems apparent though, is distribution of the Acer 8942G will begin shortly in Germany, the U.K., and Sweden. I am wondering if this model will be limited to Europe only, and none will be seen on U.S. shores..... ???

Of all the Acer 8940G variants..... thusfar, only one model arrived here, and it's sales began just a month ago.

Also, I am curious about this mystery ATI 5850 card, when it was initially said to be the 5650 card. Typo errors in all countries advertising the pre-orders? Or, a substitution to meet deadlines? Why Europe only? A shortage of 5650 cards, but suitable production levels of the 5850 cards for a European run? And, if 5850 cards, will they be downclocked as 5650 cards?

Heck, I haven't even seen an official Acer announcement on this model!

LOL! It's fun to speculate, but we will know the answers soon! Time will tell!

    :D

Just ordered one today! Was told that I should have one in 7 to 10 days time..........
    Then......

I got the phone call saying that Acer haven't got any stock of them, and the earliest date they can give for delivery on these models is sometime in Mid-January.
Looks like I might be getting a DV8 now then :-(

Yeah, I have since found something more worthwhile myself...... w/ATI HD 5870 (GDDR5), Q1, 2010! I was excited about the Acer 8942G, but I think I will be skipping this model too.

    Oh Well!

Tried to PM you, but you have not reached the minimum post requirements to allow PM's. I think one more post should do it.

    Anyhow, read here, and here......

Until I re-evaluated my choice in a new notebook, I was going to purchase the 8942G from Europe. This makes for a few minor problems that should be considered..... i.e.: warranty concerns, pricing, power cord adapter, and the WIN 7 OS language. I was willing to deal with these issues..... others may not be so agreeable.

Hopefully Acer will distribute this model to the U.S., but presently this is an unknown. If they do, I suspect this will be a little while yet, and other choices will be soon arriving to our shores.

    Good Luck!

    :)

Are these really likely to be around by late December / end of first week of January?

Given TSMC's terrible yield problems and lack of desktop chips, it would be surprising if ATI managed to produce enough mobile chips to satisfy a big OEM like Acer.

Sorry Acer does not provide your desired configuration..... but perhaps soon. Let's put this on Santa's wish list!

The 'Twisted Reviews' article was the first to leak the 8942G, and they wrote of the 5650 card. Everything else since, including the Acer 8942G resellers, has stated it will be equipped with the ATI 5850 card.

I have yet to see anything official on this model from Acer.

    Let's keep our fingers crossed!

I like all the features except the 5400 rpm HDD. If I were to buy it, I would have to replace the HDD with a 7200 rpm one and ebay the 5400 which is annoying.

Most users wouldn't notice the difference between a current generation 5400RPM and 7200RPM... if you want to remove that bottleneck, you'd be better off with a SSD.

It affects the Windows Experience index. I have looked at the 8940 in Fry's today and the overall score was only 5.6 with the 5400rpm HDD being the lowest. The CPU and RAM score 7.2 and 7.4 respectively but the hard drive score, being at 5.6, is slower than an Asus 51G (5.9 for the slowest part - HDD with 7200 rpm)

I think 0.3 is important because my CPU is a P8400 on a Gateway FX 7811u is 5.9, while a Q9000 is only 6.2 in some other machines.

sgogeta4 is correct! If you want to ramp up data transfer in a noticable way, go with an SSD.

Oh well, let's see what CES brings, January 7th.

Huh, right where, and $3200 for which model? Geez, that is Dell/AW prices, LOL! Sorry, but I am not following you here. Please leave a reference link. Are you referring to the Acer 8942G? And if so, where are you located, Europe?

That will probably be the ballpark for the model I am waiting on, but that is because I will be customizing into that price range.

I found this in the specs of a 8492G on an asian store. It seems to be the most detailed info so far, and for that reason I would assume the most reliable. It seems to confirm that we are looking at a 5850 with GDDR3. Should be an amazing card.

    Memory Interface 256bit
    Frequency (core / memory) 550/800MHz

Not so accurate after all .... The 5850 will definitely be DX11, not DX10.1

Unless they rebadge the 4xxx series like some rumors have said, then you won't have DX11.
