My first post. I have a 1 year and 10 month old Acer Aspire 9300 laptop and the motherboard recently bit the dust. My retailer in Gananoque Ontario could not find a replacement. I called Acer which took forever to get to someplace where I could leave a message. I received no reply. After you've called once it's impossible to call again. I guess their answering machine recognizes my phone number and then asks questions that makes it impossible to get through. I sent a detailed explanation of my problem by email 3 times asking a few simple questions, the most important being 1) where can I send the laptop to be repaired? 2) do you sell replacement motherboards and if so how can I buy one? Am I asking too much or getting too technical for them? I've been trying for several weeks now to contact Acer to no avail. What kind of an idiot company is this? A techie put me onto a company called Grand Tech in Richmond Hill Ontario that can replace the motherboard on an exchange basis but the replacement will likely be a repaired one. Someone told me that the problem I have with the motherboard is common and it is because the solder used at least when mine was made was of poor quality. I hope that problem has been resolved. I'm afraid a repaired replacement my have the same problem. Some people just say to trash it and get a new on which I did. I bought a Dell Inspiron 17 which is supposed to arrive on Nov 11. I would however like to repair the Acer if it can be done cheaply and use it to replace my 8 year old PC in the rec room. Any suggestions?

can you describe the problem, maybe you can repair it yourself.

I'm guessing it's a problem with the graphics? Do you have nvidia graphics?

Thanx for the reply. After it crashed I took it to the retailer where I bought it as they have an in-house service department and a bad motherboard was their analysis. They couldn't find a replacement board anywhere. When I brought it home it wouldn't even start up. I ended up buying a new Lenovo which had some initialization (whatever that means ... I'm a technopeasant) problem so they replaced it with a new one and it had the same and similar problems so I returned it for a refund. When the retailer's techie was downloading all my files from the Acer hard drive he said that he also thought it was a motherboard problem. That night bought a Dell Inspiron 17 laptop which should arrive on November 11. If it makes sense to replace the Acer motherboard I'd still like to get it fixed to replace the 8 year old but reliable PC in the rec room but I'm concerned that that might only be throwing good money after bad. It just Ps me off that a less than 2 year old laptop should be totally toast.

the mainboard is going to be hard to find, just due to it's age. what you spend for it, may not be worth it. try parting out the laptop on ebay.

You mean it's actually hard to find a motherboard for a laptop that's LESS than two years old? I could try ebay if I only knew how. I am a technopeasant after all. I actually signed up a few years ago with the intention to learn how in order to get rid of the stupid huge doll collection my wife inherited. I do have friends who will help me learn.

2 years is around 4 generations in laptop terms. IPC-computer.de will do it for 399.99 Euros + shipping if you REALLY want it done.....

Good grief!!! 400 Euros is over $600 Canadian plus return shipping to Denmark from Canada plus probably only getting a refurbished motherboard plus possibility of further damage from that much shipping = a new laptop is the better choice. I wonder if laptops will ultimately become as good as a PC?

    A laptop is a PC...

The only way laptops would be able to be as powerful as desktops was if a new cooling technology came along that was lightweight, small and beat all other forms we know today. That way the small shell of the laptop would not be a limitation.... Other than that no.

Is is better to just leave the laptop on at all times? Do they all go into hibernation which I suppose turns parts down so less cooling is required? I suspect that the problem that killed my Acer in less than two years is that I turned it off and on at least two or three times a day which someone told me produces constant heating and cooling resulting in expansion and contraction to the solder in the motherboard which consequently breaks down.

I have the exactly same problem with aspire 9302 WSMI from june 2007. I can`t understand how is it possible to pay 800 euros for a laptop that died in less than 2 years ? I will never buy acer again, they don`t take care of their customer at all.
