Does your unit have the RAID setup? if so you're going to need to find the drivers for your RAID controller in order to get your windows xp disk to pick it up.

This is a common problem for all systems and not just ACER. The problem is you need to install the drivers for SATA drives before the XP install CD will read the drive. I would google it or go to a Vista forum. Any Vista forums will have a topic on the subject since it is one of the most common topics discussed.

ive had this problem before when i upgraded my motherboard with sata drives

...you need a windows xp service pack 2 disk or create your own win xp disk with the sata drivers intergrated to install windows ....all that press f6 stuff is a pain in the bum!
