I just got this new Acer laptop from this site: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834115246

Feel free to check the specs. But this laptop has this stuff for the specs on the memory:

    Memory Slots 2 x DIMM
    Memory Speed DDR2 533
    Memory Size 1GB
    Max Memory Supported 2GB
    Memory Spec 512MB x 2

I am just starting this computer stuff and have not a clue what that means. If I want to upgrade my Memory from the 1 GB to 2 GB what do I need to do? I read somewhere about the slots on the memory. How do I know if i got the 4 or 2 slot, etc.? My roommate says I need to remove my 2 512 MB and replace them with two 1GB memory. I am not sure if he is right so I decided to ask you guys, the experts/experienced users. I also read somewhere that the Gold tips have to be paired with gold tips and no other metals or some kind of chemical reaction will occur. Well can someone please straighten this out for me so I can go ahead and upgrade my memory. And can you please tell me the cost. The more cost efficient the better.

Also, will this void my 3 year warranty?
Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

u want 200 pin ddr2 ram, i don't believe any notebook ram have heat spreaders. also, the max speed ram is 667 for core duos. any more will be clocked down via bios.

Infineon is what Acer puts in their laptops. The real shame is that you will have to ditch the two 512MB sticks so you can fit two 1GB sticks (SODIMM). What a waste. Why didn't they just give you a single 1GB stick with the second slot vacant? Oh well, you can always keep the 512 pair as a backup or you could try to sell them on eBay(but that's still a pain).

I've upped my memory to 1 gig in my 3614wlmi. I looked first and, there was only 1 512 stick inserted whereas the manufacturers spec says 2 x 256 modules. Excellent news. So look before you buy.

because you need two DIMMs to support dual channel

Yes, I realize that. But I would have certainly given up the dual channel in favor of picking it back up with a purchase of only one identical stick. I know some TMs support dual channel but only give you one stick of 1GB RAM or one 512MB stick. The TM3012WTMi, and TM4220A are two.

corsair or kingston or crucial or patriot... all those brands are pretty good. Honestly, they'll all perform the same and all manufacturers now are offering lifetime warrantees. u won't notice any difference really, not even with 667 ram over 533. The only difference u'll notice is the extra 1gb, but u will sacrafice lower latency. I've had all the brands above, and I think patriot is the best bang for the buck.

    Will this work?
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1515856&CatId=150
    or this?

Also what does sacrificing lower latency mean? and also the speed on the one gigs are 333MHz PC2700. But the Kingston one says Memory CAS Latency is 2.5 What does all this mean? What is my latency right now? Both have Pins of 200 What other cons other than price and latency exist if I upgrade to the 2GB? Thanks for all the help so far!

No and No for both memories. You can only use DDR2 memory

Latency refers to the amount of clock speeds the memory cycles through before it responds. Higher the CAS latency slower the memory. I wouldnt worry too much about latency as the clock speeds also do matter when chossing memory. Between say 533MHz 4 CAS memory and 5 CAS 667MHz memory there will be little difference and usually people pick the lower priced one.

Here are the specs for my Acer 5672WLMi Laptop:
-Intel Core Duo Processor 1.66 GHz 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache
    -15.4" WXGA CrystalBrite LCD (16ms)
-ATI Mobility Radeon x1600 up to 512 MB HyperMemory
    -120 GB 5400rpm SATA HDD
    -Slot-loaded DVD-Super Multi double layer (support DVD +/- R Double Layer/DVD +/- RW)
    -1GB DDR2 (support dual-channel)
    -802.11 a/b/g wireless LAN
    -Bluetooth 2.0+EDR

Hope that may help to distinguish what I need to upgrade to the 2GB of mem...Will the benefits exceed the cons? What are the cons and benefits? As of now I know that when I upgrade the memory I can able to play things like Doom 3 without much problem.

Basically make sure the RAM you are looking at has these specs...

    200 pin DDR 2 PC(2) 3200 or 4200 or 4300 or 5300 SODIMM.

    I would skip over DDR2 400 (PC 3200) and choose between DDR2 533 or DDR2 667.
    Some of these should work...
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...2910525+1309121113&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=381

I would say the benefits(future requirements - Vista..) would definately outweigh the cons(I dont think there can be any other cons other than being expensive).

Yeah, thet should be fine other than being a unknown/generic brand.

Memory manufacturers round off the numbers. he PC5300/5400 refers to the max bandwidth. For 667MHz memory I believe it is ~5346. Some round up whereas some round down.

First time I hve heard of this...No idea what you are asking about

If you are asking about the components used in the chassis, then it is Plastic.
