not sure how to verify this, basically it doesn't work when plugged all the way into the computer. If I plug it in 3/4 of the way and turn it to a specific spot, the headset kicks in and the laptop speakers go off. I was wondering if this computer needs a specific high end model or do I just have a bum insert jack?

I just got my laptop this morning. I ran some futuremark tests on it in case anyone was interested. These tests were run virtually straight out of the box, the only updates being the critical automatic windows updates.

    Stock Acer Aspire AS5672WLMi (x1600)
    3DMark 05: 2829
    PCMark 05: 3301

Then I installed the latest version of the popular ATI omega drivers:
    3DMark 05: 2792

Then I installed 2 GB of DDR 667 ram which I also purchased and had surprisingly unimproved results:
    3DMark 05: 2795
    PCMark 05: 3274

Even though the new ram is faster, PCMark scores are consistent across the board with the exceptions of file encryption being significantly slower (33.6MB/s to 19.9MB/s) and file compression being somewhat faster (2.84 MB/s to 3.76MB/s). Any theories?
Seems like the more I touch it the worse it gets.

I expect noticeably better scores after I wipe the slate clean and start with a fresh install of XP pro. (65-70 running processes can't be helpful)

Anyway, enough with the useless software tests. Time to install XP Pro and start loading up the stuff I'll really use.

    -----EDIT----
After a fresh install and latest driver updates, my scores are:
    PCMark 05: 3349
    3DMark 05: 2823 (omega drivers)

I'm sure a higher 3dmark score could be achieved by tweaking the drivers beyond reason, but I'd rather have my games look good.

Think there is any chance the price will drop in the next couple weeks when the new CPUs come out? :p

Got my 5672, have been using it for two weeks before this post. I would have to agree with you all, great lappy, although the fat32 partitioned drive s very slow at defragmenting. the original program for burning cds got unistalled after defragging with chkdsk got me errors saying the software was not properly installed, so i bought nero 7 premium and it's running well without problems. Tried to connect the Dazzle DVC90 usb, it recognized it, but it did not installed it. Thinking of buying me an avermedia TV card, any problems with it?. I also uninstalled norton antivirus and went with etrust faster and does not slow the machine as norton does. It does get hot, so i bought me a laptop cooler, still waiting for it. Sound through the speakers is very low, so i plug me some headphones if watching a movie. I did both backups the DVD Restore and the DVD applications. It works fast and well, still undecided about reformating and going with a new XP SP2 reinstall on a one partitioned drive. Still undecided if I should, I would have to buy a new XP because of the inhability of the restore DVD to do a clean install.

Build quality is very good, hardware used is very good, and for the installed hardware, i would have had to spend more than $1,800 for it, it cos me $1,100 at JR.

    Good Lappy, good desktop replacement.
Will write again when i get the avermedia TV card.

Thanks for the info. I bought one Saturday at CompUSA for $999 after rebate. Havent opened it yet. Want to check more reviews, see what else is around, etc. Have 3 weeks to return. I am a little concerned about the heat issue everyone talks about, as mine will be on all day long. ALso not sure about the XP Home that came on it versus XP Pro that I am used to.

    Any thoughts??

use convert c: /fs:ntfs and follow the prompts with y for both and acer for the volume label and youll be set.

smaller partitions can increase performance in some cases.

it doesnt get that hot. yes it is warm, but how can you blame a thin lappy with such power to be ice cold.

Your pcmark score will go down with the 667 ram as the latency is higher and pcmark tests latency. Also install the newest catalyst drivers and your 3dmark score will improve. I too saw a significant drop in 3dmarks when going to omega. with the ram and the newest catalyst Im sure youll see some improvement in 3dmark,

Mine is also on all day long.. and it does get hot (even at lowest cpu speed). It gets irritatingly hot near the touchpad and the palmrest area for typing.

My solution to this was to buy an external keyboard and mouse. The screen is big enough and so I can push back the laptop and use the usb keyboard without any problem.

    RE:ATI Mobility Radeon X1400

Was playing with Pcpitstop and it suggested I should update the driver, question being where do I find the upgrades on the Acer site for the 5672, thanks?

'PC Pitstop's video performance performs a basic test of your system's graphics capabilities and reports the result in millions of pixels displayed per second (MP/s). The percentage indicates the performance of this system compared to systems in our database with a similar CPU, clock speed, and video board. For example, a score of 50% would indicate this system had half the performance of comparable systems; 200% would indicate twice the performance. Determining "normal" performance can be difficult, there can be wide differences due to video drivers even on the same video board.'

The heat issue: Bougth a notebook cooler pad from amazon, the notepal by cooler master, it definitely brrings down the heat issue, the warmness of the touch pad comes down about 75%. It is made of aluminum which is a good heat dissipator, and it is curved beneath which allows it to better recirculate air. It is a bit not wide enough but the lappy sits well in it and it gives me a better typing position.....

I ordered this laptop today after reading many good reviews. I've never owned an Acer before, and was reluctant to give them a shot this time, but this laptop seems like such a great deal. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16834115246

I'm a game designer, so in addition to running the usual dev apps, I also need to be able to run (unoptimized) 3d games fairly well. We'll see how this laptop (and the x1600) holds up to my abuse.

    Cheers!

I really want to buy this notebook and I found it going for $500 USD at a liquidation site called Stellartronic Inc. ( http://www.compzila.com/)

    http://www.compzila.com/product_info.php?product_id=3473&categorie=3

Then I did some research and I couldn't find anything really on the site which is sort of weird and then I went to checkout and this is the information on how I purchase the notebook

even when u google it, nothing shows up... it's so fishy how they don't have any contact information. Looks like a scam to me... too good to be true. an 8204 for a grand? that's not at all right... wiring money is a sure way to never see something in return.

I've had my 5672 for a couple of days now, and must say... this is probably the best laptop for the money that I've found.

Before I even booted it up I removed the black film that covered the air intake under the fan (theres a warning in the instructions that says "do not cover the air intake"... oooook), added some arctic silver, and slapped some copper heatsinks on the wifi and north bridge chips. I then installed XP Pro and all the drivers... it's been running like a champ since. There is MINIMAL heat near the touchpad... much cooler than my dell e1505! This laptop + the logitech mx5000 bluetooth keyboard and mouse is pure heaven.

    Thanks Acer!

With regards to XP Pro. I contacted ACER tech support and they indicated that the laptop may not work properly if XP pro was installed? They said some of the drivers and applications were not compatible?

I've had no issues getting any of the components to work. The only acer software I'm using, though, is the power management... which seems to work fine under xp pro.

I also haven't tried installing the web cam yet since I'll probably never use it anyway.

Temperature update: Last night I played some WoW in window mode with photoshop and dreamweaver running in the background, my cpu temp was 58-60C, HD temp was 45C max. This isn't all that bad I suppose for such impressive performance in a sleek package.

You are saying that your laptop runs cooler than the E1505? Was this the case before the heatsinks? I'm on the 11th hour of a laptop purchase and this is still a strong possibility. Down to E1505 and 5672WLMi actually. So seeing as you've owned both I thought maybe some additional input would be of value.

You even mentioned you prefered the screen on the Acer vs. the WSXGA+ on the E1505?? Eeeee!

I actually have both laptops. The dell has 15.4" wsxga, t2400 processor, 5400 sata, 256mb nvidia go 7300. It gets pretty warm under load. I didn't run the acer until after i put the heatsinks on, so I'm not sure how much of a difference that made. I can tell you that now the acer is cooler to the touch in the touchpad area. When the acer is on the cooler pad heat is virtually non existent, even under heavy load.

With the cooler pad, the acer cpu temp doesn't go above 55c under load. I'm just using the $30 targa pad from best buy.

One thing I would like to do is manually set the fan speed... haven't found anything that works with this mb yet... anyone?

How about the screen? Which is brighter the E1505 or the Acer 5672? Which has better viewing angles?

Maybe a digital camera picture of both side by side to difference of brightness between the two?

Overall how do you feel about both laptops .. which would you recommend to someone who wants to do some gaming like Battlefield 2 and World of Warcraft?

You don't need to flash the drive. The best way (and FAR better than any freebies) is a simple program that will not only disable the region protection on your drive, but will also remove Macrovision and any other copy protection as well (you'd need a free program like DVDShrink to actually copy DVDs). It's a small file and runs in the background and can be used to reduce the drive's noise as well. It's called ANYDVD and comes with a LIFETIME of free updates. I think it's about 33€ (or 39$) and they regularly have offers. The site is www.slysoft.com.
Hope this helps (you may have already had a reply but I hope this will prove to be useful to all).
    Best regards.
    Christopher.

Same laptop that I've had for the last 4 months and it's been flawless. Read up on the reviews and comments here - http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=77995

Basically don't be stupid and leave the laptop on a rug while plugged in, give it some ventilation, prop up the laptop in the back with a book or cooling pad, do positive things to keep it cool and just use your head.
