I'll have a full review later this evening or tomorrow evening I hope. Its labeled from UPS as "Out for Delivery" now.
3dMark06 and probably 3dMark11 everyone would want to see.
What other benchmarks do folks want to see?
Hopefully pictures will be involved... everyone loves pretty pictures..
Pictures will be coming (i think) but here is my initial review and benchmarks:
*matte finish is very nice and i like the fact that it doesnt show fingerprints nearly as bad as my shiny asus ul50vt does (handed down to my wife now)..
*keyboard feels very solid and and is very easy to type on.
touch pad was a little strange, while i was initially playing L4D2.. i couldnt use it at all to move around while i was holding any keyboard keys down... finally found that it was because of the palm check. other than that, the actual "mouse" buttons feel a little light when pressing them, but it wasnt terrible. multi touch works well and i've noticed since enjoying the multi touch on my asus, i dont think i ever want to go back to using a non multi touch touchpad.
*initial startup of windows seems a bit slow. I'm not 100% sure if this is because of the really slow HD or because of the slower processor speed. I'll know more when I drop an SSD in the machine.
*benchmarks:
Unigine Heaven 2.1: 10fps (from what i've seen is about avg for the mobility 5650)
L4D2: maxed out settings it can run easily at 40fps, higher in a lot of situations. 40fps was on the first level when you go down the elevator in the hotel and all the fire and hoard comes. I figured this would be one of the worst spots
SC2: maxed out Ultra settings. I was very worried about this when i first tried this because of how brutal Ultra is, but I was very nicely surprised when the lowest I saw was 23fps.. and this was on the last level when the large waves of zerg come to attack. Granted my fps didnt get very high either.. but a low of 23 is pretty impressive i thought.
3dMark11
3dMark06
Windows Experience
processor: 6.9
Ram: 5.9 (I would swear this said 7.2 the first time I opened it. which is odd)
Graphics: 6.8
Gaming: 6.8
Hard Disk: 5.7
*battery: 17.3" Laptop running on a small 6cell battery aint gonna be pretty.. but i can manage about 2hrs of "office" type work on it... i'm good with that. Gaming i'll always be near a plug.. so it is about what I expected.
*final thoughts: overclocking the processor to 2.5-2.7ghz would be flat out awesome I think. Would probably really wake the system up and perform quite well.

Just so you know, in 7 series laptops with 1600x900 displays you can fit a 1920x1080 panel in them easily.
-
i think the first mod i'd like to do is make use of the (reported) 2nd hard drive bay and make my primary an SSD, and use the 500gb 5400 rpm drive as data

bump for first post update with benchmarks
-
How much were you able to OC the 5650?
Also, do you detect any CPU bottlenecking in certain games?
I have a similar laptop. -
i think i've got the 5650 round about 650/950 and it seems pretty stable.. i've tried 700/975 and crashed... so i might not be quite as lucky on the graphics as you were.. .i think the actual benchmarks were done at 650/900..
once i get some time to do some real gaming, i'll watch the cpu usage...
i would really like to get this puppy overclocked to 2.5ghz.. but that might be a pipe dream... anyhoo i did find this TPC which is fairly similar to k10stat but commandline only. it does have frequency settings on it.
did you ever get anywhere with the ACC bios? -
Nah Phoenix BIOS didn't have any hidden option which unlocked the CPU.
Hm so is N930 a "10h" CPU? I don't know this sort of thing well.
Edit: how does one operate this TPC program lol. Mind you my technical expertise is about 3/10. -
Also Fyrebran, are you getting these kinds of colour dithering with your 7552G? (I have this problem with my 5553G screen)

This is what my SLR camera took. You can clearly see the ugly screen dithering between the white and bright colors border, and between the bright green and dark green border (same with other two colors). This dithering defect happens to ANY image/video etc which have both bright and dark colors.
Note: this photo was taken with the screen calibration at ALL default settings (gamma/contrast/hue/saturation/brightness)..

This is the original file I made in photoshop. Should all see very smooth gradient with this. -
Never mind, I'm returning my laptop
-
Hey,
I have a 5553G too, it's closely related to this one.
My WEI is the same except for my hdd gets a 5,9 as well. My HD5650 is currently clocked at 675/960, though I haven't gotten around to really testing it's max. Overclocking the CPU doesn't seem to be possible sadly, and I'm a (tiny) bit worse off on the cpu with losing another 100mhz to yours.
Compared the 3d mark scores and they seem pretty alike.. 3d Mark '06 / 3d Mark '11
@jerg: whoa... what is wrong with your screen? Yeah, you'd best return it.. I don't have that at all (my old hp had it a little, but barely noticable too) -
However the real reason why I inclined to returning it was because the N930 CPU wasn't up to par on running modern games, and is quite the bottleneck. See my numerous "how the afafadfji do I overclock this AMD N930" threads over the past month and you'll see how frustrated I amthe screen problem is (almost) godsent.
Also, can you list me your screen brand/version with your 5553G? Just check it in device manager > monitors > generic pnp display > properties > hardware info. Maybe it's an isolated problem with a specific line of AUO screens. -
LOL, the monitor isn't listed at anything else then monitor when the hd5650 is on.
With the integrated it says it's a LG Philips LP156WH3-TLL1, so yeah, it may be a problem with AUO screens only. Tilting my screen at around 35 degrees or more it starts to show a bit, but that's okay, as I'll never use it tilted that much.
It's not the fastest, but feels to respond faster than the Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 (dual core at 2GHz), and seems to be running fine in the games I've been running so far (GTAIV @ 33 fps, Mafia II @ around 40 fps).
Then again, I'm quite content with it as I'm only using it to bridge the time between now and next year (if only my old laptop would've held out, I wouldn't have bought any laptop anymore), when I won't need a laptop anymore and can get myself a good desktop, and all the money I could spare off right now I can spend later(the timelinex's family of it cost 150-250 euro's more)
-
I see, yeah it could very well be a screen brand problem then.
Here in Canada the 5553G and the 5820TG (at the moment) cost the same. Which is why I'm really wishing they can refund me faster so I can quickly buy the 5820TG before the discount expires. -
in canada and europe the acer 7552g can come with amd X920 quad core black processor (unlocked multiplier) and ATI 5850. $999 from belgium amazon site... i want one!

-
Here is the link for a retailer in canada that does carry it.
Acer Aspire AS7552G-6851 Notebook, Black - AMD Phenom II Black Edition Quad Core X920, 17.3" LED-backlit, 6GB RAM, 640GB HDD, ATI Radeon HD 5650, DVD-writer, Wireless N, Gb LAN, Webcam, HDMI, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit | Canada Computers
$899 with AMD X920 2.3ghz quad core, ati 5650 though instead of 5850. in belgium I saw an acer with X920/5850 for $999 euro -- which is to much for me. $899 is to much for a laptop with only 5650 too. I think im going to play it safe and order something in the US with slow processor and watch ebay or other grey markets for an X920 and just swap it out like i did for my last gateway laptop. -
well, i ordered an AMD X920 from ebay -- assuming its not a scam or hoax i am going to drop it in an acer / gateway in the next week or two and pray that the bios recognizes it. Since its a black edition processor i also hope amd overdrive lets me overclock it.
If not, at least ill have a 2.3ghz quad core...
