hello!
does anyone know if there is a way to stop the stupid fan in a aspire 1690 laptop?
in windows or linux the fan is always working, the bios doesn't help, in the windows acer software there's an option to "fan always on" but if i turn it on or off nothing changes
anyone knows anything about this?
thanks!

If your doing intesive tasks then it needs to be. Check your temps.

Mine's always on as well but it is very quiet. When I have it on max battery I can only tell that it is on by putting my ear right next to the exhaust port or by feeling for the wind. When I am doing intense work the air blown out is hot but on max battery it is a gentle, cool breeze. I do not find it to be a problem and I am kind-of reassured that there is a level of constant thermal protection for the precious innards of my laptop.

I have the same machine and had the same problem. The acer aspire 1694 makes a lot of noise because of the fan on the ATI card, not the CPU. It is necessary to lower the speed of the ATI card to get rid of the noise. This can be done in the advanced settings for the graphics card, but ofcourse, this necessarily lowers performance.
However, you may want to play around with ATItools from http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/ This tool has hotkeys and ability to detect OpenGL / Direct3D use. That way, the ATI power is cranked up only when you need it, during games for instance.
For reference, the ATI RADEON X700 at the powerplay setting "optimal battery life" will have a core speed of 104.63 and memory speed of 119.81
