Hello folks,
I just happened upon this website today by coincidence, while looking for a possible reason my aspire 5315 wouldnt find the hard drive while attempting to downgrade to Windows XP. I found my issue easy enough, but found some really interesting information regarding how up-gradable these machines are.
This is a laptop that my mother gave me after my father passed away a couple years ago. It had a broken screen latch, windows vista, 1gb of ram, bad battery, chewed up charger (yorkie, and randomly shut down for no apparent reason. Why my father never asked me to look at it for him will forever be a mystery to me. Well I ordered a cheap battery and charger, removed the broken latch, upgraded to 2gb ram, installed Windows 7, and took it apart to find that dust had completely insulated the heatsink from the fans airflow. It now serves me well as a second, but rarely used laptop, that still occasionally shuts down (thermal)
I decided to go to windows XP because I just took on the IT duties at the place I work, which still relies on XP almost exclusively. I figure I will keep that laptop at work since its not used in my home. After reading someones thread, I see where these motherboards are able to accept up to and including the T8100/8300 CPU's? Is that correct? My interest is peaked, and I have a new found interest in this old laptop. I also have a couple more questions while Im at it.....
1. Is the GPU upgrade-able like the CPU?
2. Is 2gb of ram still the max? can it go higher? according to acers website, 2gb was the max it would take.
3. Regarding CPU's, are the notebook and desktop CPU's the same? or better yet, is there even a desktop version of this CPU?
Current configuration is it has a Celeron M [email protected], and I just updated the bios FROM 1.17 to 1.45.
I was completely unaware that you can upgrade laptops like this. I was under the impression that it was a modular unit, and that what you bought at the store is what you are forever stuck with.....Any input would be appreciated.
