I have an Acer Aspire 5612WLMi notebook which came with Windows XP Home. I recently installed a different OS ( Linux Ubuntu 9.1 ) and in doing so, I accidentally deleted the disk recovery partition and can no longer revert back to Windows. I have and OEM cd of XP and when I try to install it, I get several stop errors, even after a low-level format. I tried contacting Acer for a copy of the D2D recovery but they inform me that it is no longer available. Please advise.....thanks.

You can use a retail XP disc and a product key from the bottom of the chassis to activate Windows.

Well, at this point I don't even get as far as putting in the key, about a minute after the start-up process begins, i get the blue screen with the stop errors and cannot continue.

Let's clarify something- are you trying to use Acer recovery DVDs or a retail disk?
Are you sure that the discs are readable (you can copy files of them to another computer or Nero CD/DVD Speed scan quality scan comes clean (all green)
Are you sure that the HDD is OK?

I am using and OEM disk that came with my desktop machine, as my laptop did not come with any disks, and I deleted the recovery partition which used to restore everything to factory. The CD is readable and my HDD is fine...I had to revert back to linux in order to go online here...

Well if you are positive that HDD is fine and so is the Win CD you are left with possibility of RAM failing (you can test it just to be sure) and the possibility that OEM Win CD is heavily customized for your desktop and doesn't contain something your notebook needs.

Try to get a hold of another Windows CD (preferably retail one) to confirm that it's the computer not the media that is to blame.
