No question about it. I'd go with the 521. This thing is in notebook check's own words, "A netbook with a sub-notebook's performance". After using it for about 2 months I gotta agree.

The built in ATI 4225 with 384 vRAM is awesome (relatively speaking), and the NEO II performs much faster than any Intel processors out there. Runs office 2010 smoothly (word, powerpoint, excel etc). Works well with Photoshop CS2. Solid build quality (a rarity for Acer), but the cover isn't exactly subtle, and a finger print magnet.

Despite the heavy GPU, this thing can still have a battery life of 5.5 hrs under regular use.

Plus it plays a mean game of Portal (or Mafia I or heck even Modern Warfare on low details). Remains relatively cool under gaming.
Its got bluetooth, Wifi, and even a 3G sim card slot tucked away in it. Plus the ability to play HD videos (with an external monitor via HDMI).

Just make sure u get a 2GB memory slot (for Win7) and if possible upgrade to win7 home premium (starter sucks).

The only con I have is with the Shared Vram. For whatever retarded reason, the laptop comes configured with 512 MB Vram, meaning it siphons off
about 128 MR from your system ram to make up the vRam number, resulting in Windows having less than the advertised 1 GB ram to work with. There is
no way to change this sharing from the bios. Hence, get the 2GB ram.

I agree- 521 has a good CPU, good graphics (compared to Intel) that works fine with HD video and still manages a decent battery run.
It may not be as impressive as Atom's battery run but in my opinion it's not important- with a computer that size you really won't be able to work for 8 or 10 hours straight.
Aspire One 521 gets some kind of a refresh though- according to a press release dated October 4th 2010. I can't see a difference but you may want to wait and see what's changed.

It's here- it's mainly about Aspire One D255 but mentions both AO521 and AO721 in this manner

Exactly- there's a new BIOS for this model released on October 4th too but the only change seems to be a new 3G modem added.
It's possible that there will be insignificant changes in configuration or- which I find more plausible- new chassis colors or something like that.
Anyway- if you decide to buy this one and you're not in a hurry give it a few weeks to see what's the update.
