It depends. Not all Z520s are the same.

hmm dell has 15% off the outlet today:

could snag a mini 10 w/ 1.6ghz atom for $288 or a mini12 with the 1.3 for the same price...

I went to look at one of these today. The A0751h, to be exact.

Not bad. Touchpad was not quite as responsive as I like, and the touch button seemed a bit stiff, but still... not bad.

Costco had a nice price of $349 for the XP version with 1 GB of RAM. UNfortunately, it only comes with a 3-cell battery. I would definitely want a 6-cell battery... especially since I would most likely keep this screen at full brightness.

WalMart had the Vista version with 2 GB of RAM for $398 with a 6-cell battery -- but I don't want Vista for this machine.

    Oh well...

I'd like to have a 3 cell for on the road. The 6 cell sticks out from the back, while the 3 cell sits flush. And it saves weight.

On ebay it will probably be easy (in a while) to get 6 or 9 cell batteries.

Yeah, I understand. I just wish the XP version came standard with a 6 cell battery.

I'm not sure why Acer mixed up the specs the way they did... but they did.

It's about time they start releasing 751 with Z530. 1.6GHz would be nice.

Yep. Well, with reviews from LaptopMag saying things like " Even in our everyday usage, the AO751h felt slow", maybe they'll get the hint.

But keep in mind that Laptopmag did not remove Mcafee and other bloatware.

After the removal 751 felt like any other N270 netbook.

Still I'd like 1.6GHz just to have a bit more power for flash.

Via Nano will beat Z520 in most benchmarks. But most browsing is not CPU intensive, so whether you'll notice it is a different story.

Screen and battery on 751 are better. Another nice feature of the 751 is the multi touch touchpad. And it's dead quiet.

I was in Costco a week ago and saw the 751 and just loved the display. Been reading all the reviews and nothing glaring to make it a no go so yesterday I picked one up. This is the first non Dell Brand that I have owned but so far I am loving it. It has XP with 1g ram and I would like to upgrade the ram but not sure what to get. Any help here on this? Thanks

    Nice, congrats!

If you put the screen on full brightness, with wi-fi on, how much battery life are you getting?

One other thing I just thought of.... does the 751 have bluetooth?

I've been thinking about the 751. I must say, I love the physical size of it. I've always felt that the perfect size for a small laptop is no more than 1 inch thick and no larger than an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper. The Acer 751 fits that bill almost exactly. Actually, the 751 reminds me a lot of my old Dell D420:

    D420 - 11.63 x 8.27 x 1" | 3 lbs
    A751 - 11.20 x 7.80 x 1" | 3 lbs (w/ 6-cell battery)

I do wish the 751 was a tad more powerful, though.

I also wish the Costco version came with a 6 cell battery.

    Sorry guys, some more questions:

    1. The 6 cell battery seems to stick out pretty far. What sleeve would work with the 751 when using the 6 cell battery?

    2. How would the 751 (with XP + 1 GB RAM) do with movies that that were copied from a DVD to the hard drive? Would it be choppy, would it stutter, etc?

    3. What about YouTube videos? (same question)

    4. Based on this, should we hold off on buying the 751 for now?

    1. Deal Extreme's Asus 1000H sleeve fitted mine. (cheap!)

    2. Smooth.

    3. SD smooth. HD stutter. HQ not sure, I think it was good.

    4. Up to you ;)

I'm getting 3 hours. I have been cleaning bloatware off and a few other things and the more I use this little machine the more I like it. I do plan on getting a larger battery after I use this machine for awhile and sure I will keep it. Good thing about Costco is they have a great return policy. You have 90 days to return it for a refund. I also like the way they stand behind the warranty.

Mine does not have Bluetooth which I don't need anyway.

I know one thing for sure though...the 11" is for me!

Nope, but it is not smooth playing on my Dell Inspiron 1721, or my Dell XPS630 desktop either so I'm not blaming it on the Acer. Could be my air card signal strength but I doubt it. The NQ runs like a charm on all three machines.

No problem....just so you get my drift. :) The 11" size for the netbook "on the go" is definitely for me now that I have one.

Netbooks are starting to be like gas wars. I will sit back now and enjoy this one while the netbook mfg wars continue. It will be interesting to see what the 11" Dell will have on it when/if it comes out. The 10's were a big disappointment to me.

True. In fact, my gut is telling me to wait a while to see what comes out soon. But I'll be going out of town in a couple of weeks, and I'd really rather have something smaller than my Sony FW to take along with me.

I still have about a week to sweat it out... ;)

Well, I really think you will like the 751 and like I said if you don't like it you can take it back if you buy it from Costco without any problems. There will always be something new coming out. Problem is that the one you like has one thing on it that the other doesn't and visa versa. Any hoot, I am happy with my 751

I'm sure I would. Still, I wouldn't mind of it were a bit more powerful, and plenty of other 11.6 netbooks are coming soon.

Yeah, I love that policy. :) But even if I do buy the 751, it won't be from Costco unless they change to the 6 cell unit.

Like I said, I've still got a week or so to see what happens.

I'm not that happy with the touch-button on the 751 so I was looking around for other (available now) 11.6" netbooks. So far I found the Gateway and the 1101HA.

I think you're over estimating the button. I read it in reviews too.

It works totally fine and after 10 minutes it feels perfect. In the beginning it's a little stiff but that's because it's new.

The Asus 1101 has a built over clocking feature allowing it to overclock 32% or something to like 1.75 GHz. It is stable due to it having a better fan or something. The Acer 751 don't have a fan or a little fan that don't do much cooling.

Wow that's neat. Where did you read that?

I don't think the Acer lacks the cooling. It's the FSB becoming unstable. It does not get hot at all.

Afaik it does. I've heard it and felt it.

But that's not the point. The reason the 751 doesn't overclock further has got nothing to do with the fan as the CPU did not get too hot.

Wrong in my opinion. Overclocking limit is caused by FSB instability, not by the CPU temp.

Better? I will have to read full reviews or better, review it myself.

I'm still on my Asus 15" 1.6Ghz Pentium M. Best offer I got was € 225 so I decided to keep it. Surprisingly it's fast enough for what I do.

I would like to get something with an SSD though.

I see a few posts about my review/articles.

Thanks for that info about the FSB being the cause of the instability, Phil.

Yeah, I've been told there is a fan in the 751 and I've updated my review. I thought it was the hard drive because I can barely hear anything. I was going to swap out the HDD for a SDD to test this, but alas, warranty stickers all over the back.

I believe the ASUS Eee PC 1101HA is going to be the better choice. Battery integrates well. Easier overclocking ability. Though I'd like to know how much battery life it gets.

Is it a 6 cell battery in the 1101HA?

If the EEEctl tool works on the 1101 it will be the clear winner because then the backlight can be increased to above 200 nits.

By the way, according to that Notebook Italia review the overclocked Z520 beats the N280 and stays cooler!

Is there a known reason why the HD speeds were limited to ~45 Mbps, like a hardware bottleneck?

I think it's part of the US15W chipset, as MSI Wind U115 and Dell Mini 10 reach similar speeds.

I doesn't really effect every day performance though, as random speeds are way more important than sequential speeds.
