If anyone hasn't checked out the Acer Timeline 1810T yet, do it. I can see why Acer discontinued the 751h so quickly.

EDIT: Picked the wrong word, not discontinued, but already not being promoted.

Has it been officially discontinued? I think it was only a rumor. There seems to be a steady supply of 751 here.

Saw the red one in Futureshop (St-Bruno), not bad but 3cell for 439+tax is too much for it... I'd wait for the new 11.6" timeline...

I eneded up getting a Dell Mini 10 with the same resolution as this. I can barely look at this sceen for more than 10 minutes. I get a headache from squinting. Is the higher resolution and 11.6 screen a "better" ratio? Has anyone ever tested side by side?

I'm going to return the Dell

Yes it's fine to me, and I don't like super high resolution screens.

Sony TZ 1366*768 on 11.1" was a bit too small for me, but on 11.6" it was ok.

Ya know, text is actually larger on a 10" screen with regular 1024x600 resolution than an 11.6" screen with 1366x768 resolution.

But by how much? Anyone can get a screengrab of the 11.6" on 1366x768 res? Please. I wanna have a feel of what it's like.

And, is the timeline 11.6" releasing in Canada on July 19th?

He was probably referring to Dell Mini 10 with 1366*768.

I don't think a screenshot is going to help you, as it will be a different size on your screen. You'll need to see it in real life.

I meant any 10" netbook. Text will appear larger with 1024x600 resolution than a 10" or an 11.6" that has 1366x768 resolution. Just look at the PPI difference:

    10.1 @ 1366 x 768 = 155.16 ppi
    11.6 @ 1366 x 768 = 135.09 ppi
    10.1 @ 1024 x 600 = 117.51 ppi

    See what I mean?

Actually no. But it's ok. To me it's quite obvious that 1024 *600 on 10" has larger letters but what I did not get is what it has to do with the discussion, as we were discussing 1366*768 on 10.2" vs. 11.6".

Mattm said "I can barely look at this sceen for more than 10 minutes. I get a headache from squinting." Therefore, I thought I would point out that text is actually larger on a 10" screen with 1024x600 resolution (in case he didn't realize it) since the larger text might help with his squinting issue.

after long journey in netbook market.. i finally settled with acer 751 this weekend. i picked one up from local costco store with 2 year warranty, $349 (plus tax) was reasonable price.
compare to my previous netbook, acer 751 is bit slower in most area. but it is speedy enough for what i do, web surfing and write a report etc. Just for fun, i installed w7 RC and it is running pretty good.. though, when i tried tp play sample 720p video (wmv), it caused a crash due to its weak GMA 500 chipset.
other than that i like its full size keyboard, hugh LED screen, and so quiet fan/noise(this was a big plus for me). thin and light factor, relatively long 3 cell battery. I think i finally found the *right* netbook for me.

danieljdsn, the 751 handles 720P and 1080P with ease once you set up Windows correctly. Try installing the DivX Tech Preview:

    http://labs.divx.com/mkvwin7preview

then you can easily play HD videos straight from WMP.

Or, MPC-HC can also be set up also to use hardware acceleration.

Update: Oh, just realized the MKV Win 7 Preview is ... for Windows 7 only.

Acer 751 plays 720p and 1080p .mkv files straight out of the box with Cyberlink PowerDVD, no settings required.

I doubt it will play 1080p .wmv files as more processing power is needed.

Anyone know where I can purchase a 2gb stick of ram that will work for my 751? I usually use Crucial but the 751 is not listed on their site.

any 2gb would work.. even if you get the 6400 (800 MHz) it would just down clock to fit the acer.

runtohell121, how does the 751 perform with the ram and SSD upgrades you've done? Is it a significant difference from stock? What OS?

well, the boot up time is just a bit more faster than the stock hdd, ram, won't really notice difference due to it being windows xp on my machine.. i believe that my SSD is capped by the sata 1 port or something.. it has slower write speed than a hdd xD

edit: you can go to my thread to see the benchmark results in the AO751h..

I was playing with the 751 at Costco and noticed that when I tapped the touchpad it didn't register as a left click the way most touch pads do.

Is this how the 751 is?

On the first page , it says that the screen is glossy but on notebookjournal.de they say it is "non-reflective"

    Which one is it ?

No, you can change that in the settings.

Definetely glossy. As glossy as it gets.

On the first page of notebookjournal.de it says: "nicht entspiegelt" which means as much as "not de-mirrored" a.k.a. glossy. It is repeated on the third page.

Maybe your are using a translation that's wrong?

The second picture you linked to is not the Acer One 751.

Looking at the Acer product page:
    http://www.acer.us/acer-v2/product....8e.c2att101=-1&CRC=2759084358#wrAjaxHistory=0
Acer® CrystalBrite Technology which is Acer's name for glossy.

And I have no doubt the unit I had was glossy. And every one I've seen.

Correct , the second picture is from another netbook but the first one is from Acer and on that one I don't see any reflections.

If I translate this page with google
    http://www.notebookjournal.de/tests/review-acer-aspire-one-751-926/3

I read on top of the page "non-reflection display"

and lower : "The reflections interfere depending on the angle more or less strong."

    They summarize as "Outside bearable"

You understand my confusion ? :)

How was your outside, sunlight experience ?

Yes I understand your confusion. Google is wrong.

It's strange though that the picture looks matte.

I tried it outside. Brightness is good but not good enough to overpower reflection when working outside with sunlight. In the shade it's ok.

Yep the screen sure is glossy. I have a glossy 17" laptop and when I first got it almost two years ago I was thinking I made a mistake. It does take some getting used to and now I love them. I find that adjusting the brightness helps when using it outside.

I am really liking my 751. I upgraded the ram and bought a 6 cell battery. Have had no problems with this little pc and it does everything I need it to do.

    Hi guys,

I've bought an Acer Aspire One 751 a week ago, and so far I'm satisfied with this netbook.
However I'm having a big problem with the webcam and I'd like to know if this happened to someone else in the forum.

    :-(

Whenever I start using the webcam for video call the computer crashes in less than 3 minutes. (it happens with both Skype and Windows Live messenger - both in the latest versions).

I'm using only the software that came with the netbook. The only additional software I installed was Skype and MSN.

Have someone had the same problem ?

    Thanks,
    A big Heineken fan.

    Hi

I'm having exactly the same problem here. My Acer 751 has XP Home and I tried to download and install the latest drivers from Acer, but the computer keeps hanging every time Skype or Messenger use the Webcam.

By the way, my netbook already had Messenger installed and crashes anyway...

Just to give you an update about my situation.

I've already exchanged almost 10 e-mails with the Acer support team and so far the problem was not solved. They keep telling me to update the webcam driver, VGA driver, BIOS, reinstalling Windows, etc.
I believe they are completely lost and have no clue about the root cause of my problem.

In fact, I'm not the only one. I've found another forum with people having the same problem as mine. They couldn't find a solution either: http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=87&t=16164

I've decided that I'm going to return my Acer 751 before the end of this week. The only doubt left is whether to gave up on Acer and buy a smaller netbook (10") from another brand, or buy another Acer 751 and risk having the same problem again.

    Hi,

I've just got the 751 replacement today. I finished the (default) Windows installation, opened Messenger Live (it comes installed with my netbook) videoconference and Internet Explorer and after few minutes... the netbook froze. After restarting and opening Messenger again it took just few seconds to freeze. I don't know what else do, it really seems a big HW problem (faulty component?)

By the way, I forgot to mention that my netbook has XP Home installed, so it is not like the OS is too new or too heavy for the netbook.

    I think I had a better luck.

Last Thursday I've returned my Acer 751, and bought a new one (very same model) from the same store.
So far I haven't had a single freeze.

However, the call quality is not very good. I often experience audio and video stuttering.
I'll try and update all the audio+video drivers (and maybe the BIOS as well) with the latest versions available at Acer's support website.
I have to do that within the first 15 days while I'm still able to return it. ;)

BTW, my 751 is the cheapest one. With XP Home, 1GB memory and without Bluetooth.

    Hi all,

I've finally solved the problem with the netbook. I replaced it for another model that starts with e and ends with ee :D. Now seriously, Acer is going to have a ton of problems with this HW failure ratio on the 751. It's a pity, I really liked that one...

Yeah, the difference between a 10.1" and 11.6" screen size is amazing - I recently had the chanceti view side-by-side an Asus 1101HA (11.6") and Sony VPC-W111XX / W11S1E (10.1" ) both 1366*768 and the Sony was almost illegible but the Asus looked great and was quite ok on the eyes!

The HP Mini 5101, a Netbook I'm also looking at, comes with either a 10.1" 1366*768 or the more common 1024*600 panel. My first impulse was the higher-rez panel of course, but after seeing the Sony in real life, there's no way... :(

So be sure to check with your own eyes before buying a 10.1" WXGA panel; ;)

    Dear Phil,
Could you please explain how to overclock the 751h ,
I just got one from a friend for free.

I bough a Broadcomm Chrystal HD mPCIe card and soldered a mPCIe adapter.
Also bought a Bloutooth+Wifi Card to replace the wifi card.
    And a Plextor 128GB SSD.
Windows 7 runs like a charm with the latest intel GMA 500 driver.
I can play 1080p HD videos even on YOutube.
Could you please explain how to Over clock to 1.45 with SetFSB.
I have tried clock generator ICS9LPRS365BGLF and it does not work.
Do i need a custom BIOS and if i do where to get one.
Thank you for your time and help.
