My Acer Aspire One (AOD150-1165) came with Windows Media Player 9 installed.
#1-Can I update that to Windows Media Player 10, OR, Windows Media Player 11?
#2- If yes, which one? (Would 10 be better?)
#3- Or would both, either, of them be too large for this AAO?
#4- If I can update to 10 (or 11), where would the best place to get the download?
#5- Would 10 or 11 OVER-WRITE version 9 (which is now on the AAO)?
#6- Why was such an 'old' version 9 installed on this AAO?

1. Both.
2. 10 might be better b/c it allows you to backup your media licenses (DRM), something WMP11 will NOT let you do.
3. Not sure.
4. Here for 10, or here for 11
5. Not sure.
6. No clue - the first release for XP was actually WMP8. -
Forgot to mention that this AAO has WinXP sp3. Does the sp3 make a difference, or can I still download/install MS Media Player 10? -
No idea - wouldn't hurt to try!
-
Updated to 11 and everything looks and works great

You downloaded MS Media Player 11 to your Acer Aspire One 10.1" net-book and did it over-write the previous version (9 or 10) you had installed?
I was told Version 11 was "too large" for the AAO 10.1" -

Version 11 is "small" for the AAO 10.1". It can do a lot more and running WMP 11 will be a easy task for the netbook.
When you isntall WMP 11, it'll overwrite a.k.a upgrade the old WMP 9. -
But I am wondering whether to download the Windows MP 10 or 11 to my Acer Aspire One 10.1"....
Someone told me they tried to download the Win MP 11 and it did a lot of pre-install checking, such as Windows authenticity; checking for Messager (I do not use Messenger / don't even know what it is), and I wonder if all these pre-installation preparations would foul-up my AAO in one way or another.
That is why I was thinking of installing ver 10 instead of 11.
Can you enlighten me about any of this? I would appreciate it because I really don't like the MP 9 (and don't know why Acer didn't install a later version, like 10, at least).
I will post this question on the forum also in case you would rather post an answer there rather than in a private post.
Thanks

Windows media player 9 was preinstalled and has always came with windows Xp. I think it's against the MS's license agreement to "pre-upgrade" the OS, but you can do that yourself through nlite or other alternative.
You can upgrade it or do anything to it just like you would do to any normal laptop. -
IKAS V
I finally installed Windows Media Player 11 on my Acer Aspire One 10.1" but it will not play my grandson's DVDs.
It says "Cannot play the DVD because compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."
Now I wonder why I went through all the trouble and worrying about installing Version 11 and then finally downloaind it, when it (Media Player 11) will not play DVDs?
My own desktop Media Player plays DVDs and I wonder whether these AAO netbooks do not come with a decoder.
Do you know what is going on? I can't afford to buy a decoder now.
This is really rediculous. (I don't know who to get mad at - Acer or MS).
Do you have any suggestions? My grandson is really sad that his DVDs do not play!
Thanks

It's not Acer or MS's fault. WMP doesn't come with a dvd decoder. You can get one by downloading codec packs such as cccp or klite video pack.
-
get the latest ffdshow tryout codec from sourceforge and enable dvd decoding in mpeg2 (video).
This will let you play dvds in windows media player or other directshow filter-based players -
Thanks.
#1- So, all I would have to do is download any one of the three suggested - CCCP; Kitte Video Pack (standard) or Ffdshow (tryout) - and they would automatically install themselves?
#2- I wouldn't have to do anything else?
I believe you know by now that I am a novice/beginner at all of this and don't know what I am doing when it comes to computers; computer programs; downloading, etc.
#3- All three of these programs would/will work with our AAO and MS MP 11 and WinXP sp3?
#4- Which would be the easiest to download and install (with no set-up, etc.)?
Thanks for the help and assistance. -
they all need a "setup" as in they need to be installed. I use K-Lite codec pack and you can accept the defaults all the way through and it should be just fine.
-
Thankyou goofball
So, all I would have to do is:
Download K-Lite Codec Pack 4.7.5 STANDARD
Will it work with my Acer Aspire One 10.1" with WinXP sp3?
Do you have the same Acer? -

goofball has a 8.9 Acer Aspire one 110 with 8GB SSD.. i think if my memoroy serve me right.
I have 8.9" Acer Aspire One 150 with 160GB HDD. -
That codec pack should work fine. I use it on Acer Aspire One A150 (8.9") and Asus EEE 1000HA. Also use it on my 2 Acer laptops (2420 and 5570) and my desktop. It's pretty hardware independent.

#1- When you say "That codec pack should work fine."
Do you mean the "K-Lite codec program?"
You said previously - "I use K-Lite codec pack and you can accept the defaults all the way through and it should be just fine."
#2- So, when I click on the exe file, I will just leave everything as it is and don't make any changes. Is that correct?
Sorry for all the questions, but I am new at this and somewhere I read that installing some codec programs can harm other programs/media programs, etc.
(Such as: "AWFUL codec pack. Makes an utter mess of codecs/filters on your system. Avoid at all costs.")
#3- Should I download and use the STANDARD (7MB), BASIC (4MB), MEGA (20MG) or FULL (14MB) version of K-Lite Codec Pack 4.7.5 from MajorGeeks or some place else?
Thanks -
Rip the DVDs you own to hard drive, either external or internal, and avoid all of this altogether. Then, you can keep the easily-scratched DVDs tucked away at home yet can watch the content easily anywhere.

2. Yes
3. You don't need the full or mega, the standard is the minimum you need though since basic doesn't include a DVD decoder. I recommend going with standard. -

Can the K-Lite Standard codec be downloaded from MajorGeeks, or is there another download site?
My neighbor said I could install VLC and have two media players on this AAO 10.1" netbook so my grandson could choose which one he likes better and use that one in the future.
But I wonder if the K-Lite Standard code for the MS Media Player might cause problems with, or cause the VLC media player not to play.
Do you think the K-Lite would cause problems with the VLC? Do you have both the K-Lite for MS media player AND VLC on your Acer?
Would you know the answer to this? -
jackluo923 Notebook Virtuoso
VLC uses its own codec thus it won't have any conflicts. Also.. both windows media player and VLC limit the netbook to play only 480P or below videos. KMplayer with external codec allow you to play 1080P, 720P Blueray rips.

Yes, I have WMP 10, VLC, Media Player Classic (comes with the K-Lite Codec pack) installed, and you can download it from majorgeeks.com if you like. No issues though I mostly use Media Player classic as opposed to MS Windows Media Player or VLC (personal preference).
