Has anyone got Acer Aspire R7? It looks great to me.

    Acer r7: Acer Aspire R7

Dual hinge technology in the Aspire R7 allows for single-hand switching between modes and keeps the display rock-steady when touched (see our image gallery above for more images).

Ezel Mode: Reach out and pull the display closer, eliminating the need to reach across the palm rest and keyboard to use the touch screen. Just pull it up and out where it can be positioned in front of the keyboard, or float over it. By pulling the display close, switching between touchscreen, keyboard and touchpad is seamless.

Notebook mode: Slide the display back behind the keyboard, and you have a powerful, full featured Windows 8 notebook computer with a 15.6-inch Full HD 1920x1080 touchscreen display, an Intel Core i5 processor, 6GB of memory, a 500GB hard drive, a 24GB SSD and a full-size backlit keyboard. It also includes a volume control button, HDMI port, SD card reader, audio jacks, three USB ports, WiFi, Bluetooth and a convenient converter port supporting VGA, RJ45 and USB.

Display Mode: Flip the screen over and it's positioned perfectly for watching a movie, showing photos or giving a presentation. Sharing and collaborating is simple, enjoyable and straightforward. With Acer's proven dual-torque design, the screen flips easily yet remains rigid when touched.

Pad Mode: Simply pull down the touchscreen and lay it on top of the keyboard with the face up, and the Aspire R7 morphs into a pad, without giving up the robust performance of a notebook. The ergonomic 4-degree tilting angle makes it perfect for browsing, writing or drawing. It?s ideal for pure touch interactions like casual gaming, browsing, drawing, annotating and more.

I picked up on of these from Best Buy today - the design looks interesting so I wanted to see how it would work.
First impressions are that it is solidly built, it looks like all I have to do is remove around 10 screws to get to the interior so I may try to take it apart this weekend.

Keyboard is responsive, feels decent and I don't find the touchpad placement to be much of an issue as I mostly use an external mouse or the touchscreen - I am installing some software and will see how it performs over the next few days. The screen renders colors nicely and seems to have decent viewing angles.

Windows Experience Index is : 4.8

    Processor 6.9
    Memory 7.2
    Graphics 4.8
    Gaming Graphics 6.2
    Hard Disk 5.9

The hinge mechanism is pretty stiff and takes two hands to manipulate the screen - not sure if this will loosen over time but for now feels pretty sturdy and will hold the screen in the position it is placed in.

@Deorc - It is a very nice concept, it's just that I was expecting it to be of a bigger size.

@corteen - Congrats for the purchase! If you happen to open it, I'll be more than happy to see its internals :) BTW the display is IPS.

Accessing the Internals: Upgradable Parts Inside

If you want to access the single RAM slot, standard 2.5" SATA hard drive bay, mSATA SSD and wireless card, you'll need to remove 10 visible Torx screws and three additional Torx screws that are hidden under the two rubber strips that run across the bottom (not under the rubber feet). These strips are affixed with double sided adhesive tape: be careful not to tear it up when you pull the strips off or you'll have to go shopping for very thin double sided sticky tape.

One you've removed the bottom cover, the machine is quite upgradable. You can upgrade to 8 or12 gigs of RAM by removing the single 2 gig DDR3 1600MHz RAM module and replacing it with a 4 or 8 gig DIMM. The 2.5" SATA drive bay will accommodate standard thin profile SSD and HDDs. Nice. You could also upgrade the mSATA caching drive, but that would likely require more fiddling in Windows 8 since the mSATA drive is set up as a caching rather than main drive.

so look like every thing but cpu is upgradable. full ssd an msata ssd mmmmmmmmmmmm
getting one in the morning lol

Thanks for the pic, kitzuki. So the rumors are right. You can definitely see the unused space on the motherboard, reserved for dedicated GPU. We would probably see some better config of R7. And yeah, I guess it wont have second fan, which means that even if it has a better GPU at some point, it wont be a mid-range one, more likely a bottom-end. Also as I read in a Bulgarian review in the beginning of the month it has 4 2Watt speakers, now you can clearly see it on the picture.

Picked one up today. Man these reviews don't do this machine justice its a get device. Everything runs smooth and I should be picking up a Samsung 840 Series MZ-7TD250 250 GB 2.5" Solid State tomorrow and will install and ruin some test. I can see why they would want to not put a ssd inside to cut down cost but with this installed it should be fine.

Does it actually fold flat for tablet mode? None of the pics I've seen seem to show it laying completely flat, as if the hinge is keeping the screen tilted at a slight angle.

Slightly tilted but very easy to hold and use while in tablet mode.

I wish if it was 14 inch, I think that would have been more balanced.

Being lazy, sometimes I like to use fingers instead of full palm gesture. I want to see slight design change for R7, it might be helpful to hardcore users as well.

This looks to be the only thread. So owners thread, only thread, this seems to be the place.

I had this for about 2 weeks, but returned it when Haswell was announced. I am waiting patiently for for the Aspire R7-572. I have looked at other hybrids in the mean time, with the Sony Flip being the most likely to compete for my hard earned dollars. The Sony Flip being it's own first generation, is suffering from a few problems as well, most notably loud fan noise.

I've narrowed it down to the 14" Sony Flip, or 15" Second Gen R7 (14" would be nice). Whoever gets their act together first, will get my money.

Well I actually like the touchpad placement, since I never use it with a touch screen. So I chose this over the Sony.

Do you have any information on a US r7 release with Haswell?

I have been in touch with couple of representatives from Acer/Best Buy. However none has been able to provide me with a specific date when they will start selling R7 572. I really hope that they will sell R7 572G version with GT750m & SSD in US. This hardware would make this laptop perfect.

Notebookcheck review warns that previous model of R7 "gets uncomfortably hot at up to 51.7 degrees Celsius (125.06 degrees Fahrenheit). Even during more normal, but resource-intensive load levels, the convertible gets quite warm". Can anyone comment on how bad is it?

It is a shame that R7 has only one fan and have not done the best job with cooling. Could we hope for better cooling in 572G?

    I haven't seen heat yet.

I was asking about information because so far the only difference I've heard is that they'll put a Haswell in. And different wifi card I'm sure

So I'm returning mine for the new Haswell version! Available at best buy. Comes with 8 gig ram and 1TB drive. For same price I already paid (bought it just a week ago). No word on type of wifi card

I'm surprised there isn't more love for the R7 on this forum. I've now been using my 571G for about six weeks, and it's just great. I only use it with a mouse (Logitech's Anywhere Mouse), but on a desk, or walking around my workplace, or using it on a train - its hybrid design works really, surprisingly well. And the IPS screen is just gorgeous. And the GDDR5 750M throws out 60FPS in Tomb Raider in 1080P with the settings on 'High'!

With the Best Buy $900 price in the US for the 572G, it seems like the RRP is already a bargain, so I'm surprised more people haven't got one. Do people really love their laptop touchpads so much? (I always hated mine before! :D Glad to have it consigned to the back for emergency use only)

Wow, really not popular, huh? Well, if you've got an R7 and want to lose that old-skool HDD inside, add some memory, or throw in an msata drive, I've taken mine apart and pointed out all the Things® and Stuff™.

If you're looking at getting an R7 'G' model, you might want to hold off for a little bit, as it seems they're replacing the GT 750M with the GTX 850M! Nice nice.
