First decent new design I've seen from Acer in a long time (since the 3820TG). 180 degree rotation? Does that mean that it can fold over on itself? If so, looks like real competition for the Lenovo Yoga. Hopefully, the display is good quality, with high contrast and 350+nits brightness. If Acer can keep the price low, it will probably sell quite a few of these, especially the 11.6" version.

Dual vents - where have we seen that before.

They've updated with video and it looks like only the 13" can do the 180 opening (lays flat). I actually like that as the old school laptops used to be able to do that and if it has a touchscreen, that will help.

In that case, nevermind. It needs to rotate through the full 360 like the Yoga to make any sense using it as a tablet. What is up with Acer's engineers?

180 degrees is useless. I want to use the tablet for reading. Even if it flips black 360 there'll be dead weight and would be a little heavy to hold in one hand. Love how it look though

nabwong : do you know the smaller (10 inch) Windows 8 Asus Tablet 600 ? It might interest you.

I am very interested in the 11 inch version of the Acer Aspire S7.

I would be curious about the exact size in mm of this ultrabook compared to a 10 inch netbook (not the thickness, the width and length).

I like small netbooks and if this 11 inch ultrabook fits into the size of my Samsung NF310*, I might buy it.

    *
    12 x 9.2 x 1.8 inches
    304.8 mm x 233.7 mm x 45.72 mm

I am also interested in the weight of this Acer Aspire S7. I might have missed this piece of informations.

I have my sights on the gigabyte x11. Wonder how much that will cost. I love acer. I'm sad they discontinued their 1830t. Wish it came back. The s7 might be the closest thing but i'll be paying a premium for the tablet feature which I probably won't use.

If you click through the photo galleries of the 11 inch machine and the 13 inch machine, you'll notice the 13 inch machine has a sticker or text on the bezel that says Full HD but the 11 inch machine doesn't. I wonder if Engadget got their facts wrong about both machines being full HD.

That 13 incher is a striking machine though. If this was out right now I'd have a hard time deciding between this and the Zenbook Prime.

That makes sense with it being a Windows 8 device. All indications point to a Win 8 release around October.

You should check out the Samsung ... pick of the litter at Computex IMO in the 11.6" range. Samsung Series 5 Hybrid tablet features magnetic keyboard dock - Liliputing The 360 rotation on the S7 would have allowed it to be used as a table-top tablet and double as a decent notebook, in the same vein as the Lenovo Yoga. Acer engineers seem to incorporate new ideas in a half-assed way these days. One simple improvement and they would have had a real winner IMO. Samsung's engineers obviously thought so. Samsung Series 5 Ultra Convertible bends over backward to become a tablet - Liliputing Look out Taiwan, the Koreans are eating your lunch.

Interesting. One issue I have with bend-backwards hybrid is the dead weight when you're reading PDFs. The transformer kind is better, however that also presents other challenges like moving the center of gravity down to the hinge. Then you'll have unequal weight distribution in tablet form. There's just a lot of challenges manufacturers are facing right now and what you get are trade offs. It will depend on what you can accept as usable until someone comes up with the perfect solution.

This computer seems to have the potential to be a real super computer.

I found this on Acer Aspire S7: The first Windows 8ultrabook with Touch display | New and Best Gadget ""It Is actually confident, nonetheless, that there are a great onboard configurzione Ivy Bridge together with no less than 8 Gigabyte regarding Ram memory DDR3 1600/1333, 128 or perhaps 256 GB SSD and also incorporated graphics chip.""

I'm not English speaking but it sounds like they are quite sure/confident that there is 8 GB RAM and dedicated graphics. I don't know how they can belive that.

What do you think, can it really be true. Sounds to good to be true.

Have one questian. In the video he says that it will be integrated graphic. Do you think that he mean that the battery not can be replaced, or is it propably?

Most beautifull computer I have seen I think :p

Nothing new on the computer? Very curious about the specs. Specially if there is more than 4 GB RAM and if there is dedicated graphics card.

o_O 11.6" Full HD? Jeez... I feel like a 17.3" FHD is already cramped... I can't even imagine that on an 11.6" screen!

Should be interesting to see the pricing on this. This could put Acer back in the game if the display is decent and it has thunderbolt support for an external GPU.

I'm trying to decide between the W700 and the S7s. I'm trying to replace both my current W500 and laptop with one device.I played with all 3 awhile back but I still can't decide. W700 is nice but the dock and keyboard is bulky. if you need to travel with them then you might as well get a S7 11.6 which is actually less bulk to carry. Another problem for me is that 1920x1080 on a 11.6" is a bit hard on these old eyes but the 11.6" S7 I played with was a engineering sample with a 1366x768 screen which I thought was perfect. Sure the S7 is a bit more but it's actually less thing to carry around.

Moving to the 13.3" help on the eyes but is much more expensive. I wish they have a i5 model with 256GB as I don't really think I would need an i7 but you are force to jump from ~$1400 to ~$1650 if you want the 256GB SSD.

Storage is a problem with all 3 since the W700 does not have an SD slot and while the S7 does, It's one where half the SD card sticks out while plugged in (you wouldn't want to carry the thing around with half a SD card sticking out the side) so you can't add more storage at a low cost.

I don't know how they perform their "Standard Battery Test" but my personal experience with the S7 11.6" is much better. I looped a ~2 hours HD mkv file at about 20% brightness and 30% volume almost twice before the unit auto shutdown on me. I would say you can probably get about 4 hours of practical use before you run out of battery.

EDIT: Given that the unit I used only have a 1366x768 screen. Driving a 1920x1080 will probably takes up a bit more power but I would think you would still see at least 3+ hours.

Has anyone bought one of these? They were released this last Friday.

I was going to buy one at the MS store, but my law school said that its exam software will not support Windows 8.

Finally saw one in person at the MS Store. Very nice... but at $1299... I can wait.

Notebooks are getting so cheap, they had Win8 Touchscreen Asus notebooks starting at $499 (very ultrabook like).

I pulled the trigger on the 256 GB version and am STILL waiting for it to ship.

While the price is high, its really pushing the envelope with its weight and one of a kind design. I really think it looks nothing like a MBA and its IPS touchscreen display in a 2.4lb package it sweet. The only obvious thing I would want more is an 8 GB option for ram and a full voltage CPU.

I am coming from the Sony Z line and paid 3000+ for those laptops. I loved the full voltage CPUs and the looks of the Z's. Hopefully with Haswell we might be able to find more full voltage 2.5 laptops from other manufactures

Really nervous about an Acer. In my mind, it has always been associated with "Cheap" or "Garbage" products.

Anyone want to share past experiences with their Acers and or warranty claims?

Like you, I was a Sony Z VPC117 owner (incidentally I just sold it off today). But I fell in love with the S7 at 1st sight and got the 128 gb SSD 13 incher. Its weight 1.2kg which is lighter than Macbook Air, touchscreen, very sharp and bright screen, silver keys on keyboard, cyan color for keyboard backlight, and its lit 'Acer' logo akin to the Macbook won me over. Last but not least, the unibody thingy too.

Edit: And I don't have to press Fn key to use Pg up & Pg down!

The build is very good, and there is absolutely no bleeding on the screen. And not much heat emission. Only gripe is battery life which is about 4 hrs. Everyone who saw it has been wowed. In fact, a friend got it one day after I got mine.

Certainly a product with no hint of its previous bad brand name :)

I finally saw one at the MS Store over the weekend.

I have to say that it's really nice looking in that glass white and the fold flat hi-rez screen is great.

I'm not too happy with the keyboard although they did include dedicated pg screens. The weird reverse L semi-connected configuration they do with the '\' key and the 'Enter' key is strange (Acer has been doing that for their latest notebooks).

But for $1299 and only 4 hours of battery life... I prefer to wait to see what else is out there... especially when you can buy an Asus in a Zenbook form factor for $499 and it also has a touch screen.

I'm going to wait on the ASUS 13" Transformer before I make my decision. I'm going for the 13.3" with 1080 screen (11.6" is just too hard to see for these old eyes). So far the Transformer spec look promising. With additional battery and a 500GB HDD on the keyboard dock. Sure it will weight more combined but the fact that you can just take the tablet portion most of the time would be great. Just wish they have a USB port on the tablet portion so you can do file transfer on the go.

I like the look and feel of the S7... I just don't like the price and the battery life.

Makes it hard to buy one of those for $1299 when an Asus VivoBook x202 is only $499 and has more ports.

The S7 is a new direction for Acer. I could not agree with your comment more. Acer has demonstrated with the Timeline series that it can make dependable, well built notebooks. The beautiful, IPS touchscreen is a big step. Glad to see it.

Yes. The price are quite high for the S7 but these are premium units meant for those that wants the best. If you're willing to settle for more weight, lower res screen and HDD, You can certainly find cheaper alternatives.

Great laptop that has wow-ed all of my colleagues at work. Attributing to the weight, the unibody (sturdiness), the beautiful muted green keyboard backlight, the slimness, the super sharp FHD screen, the super responsive touch-screen and the macbook-like lit Acer logo on cover which corresponds to screen brightess.

Only gripe is battery life which is about 4 hrs.

Mine is the i5 version. i7 version would be a tad bit too expensive, IMHO..
