Does this warranty work on Timeline's? The warranty expires on my 3810t in July and I want to extend it at least 2 more years.

I was reading this thread, and the discussion on the LG/AUO LCD panels and have a question:

Has anyone been able to upgrade the stock 4810t LCD to a higher resolution, such as 1600 x 900? Any reason why it would not work?

    Thanks!

I own two 3810t laptops. One is model #AS3810TZ-4630 purchased in Sept./`09 from Best-Buy as an open box item.I chose this particular model primarily for it`s screen resolution of 1366x768 which I considered to be the best of any laptop in this pricerange.Functionaly it works fine as far as I can tell, then again I am new to laptops in general and do not pretend to know any better. The one thing I can say with certainty is that the keyboard does not have a very good feel to it and I suspect this unit may have been a return item for that reason. The keyboard is the bilingual french/english version with the alternate green letters/symbols as you may have seen at local retailers.

The second laptop is model #AS3810TZ-4880 purchased used locally but not a canadian market model as evidenced by the english only keyboard. The specs. of these two laptops are identical however there are differences. The model #`4880 has a keyboard with a much better feel to it.The keys have a more positive and smooth action to them, alltogether with a much more satisfeing user experience to it.Now to the other difference. The screen! It`s not as good as the #4630 version and I can`t figure out why,it seems to have different resolution.Perhaps due to a different screen manufacturer.Maybe the screen was replaced at some time.

    Hello!
I just would like to say that there are more up to date drivers on Acer Website. Head over to the Acer 3811TG and you will see newer drivers (I don't know why aren't they on 3810tg too).
The ATI's do not solve the suspend issue but I think that my battery life gets more stable!
I think you guys should give a try too!

    :)

Thanks for pointing this out. But actually the driver versions are almost the same as the 3810, just that the dates are different.

There is an unofficial *fix* for the ATI suspend issue now - the modified BIOS by advan20092. His BIOS allows 3810TG users to set the graphics to Intel-only or ATI-only, so if you want maximum battery life you can use Intel-only mode. Been using it for a week or so now, and very happy with it.

The plus side is you can use the latest Intel graphics drivers, and also in ATI-only mode you can install the new Catalyst 10.3 preview.

The minus side is no on-the-fly switchable graphics and HDMI output only works with ATI graphics.

I have the 3810TZG version and use the BIOS 1.17 which is what it came with. But even with this version, the fan is always on when connected to AC power supply. ONLY when powering up, it is quiet for about 10 minutes but then starts and only stops when not using it for ca. 5 minutes (which is probably the energy saving mode).
So is there really a big difference to the 1.20 ?? Basically it is always ON I fear...

I thought of downgrading the BIOS whether it might help but fear of upgrading to 1.20. It is really annoying and hopefully one day it will be fixed.
Otherwise I might MOD it soldering a resistor in order to reduce the speed of then fan, but obviously a software/BIOS solution would be far superior. Still hoping...

    Hi advan20092,

I just tried the setting in your unlocked BIOS to change the 'memory frequency' from AUTO to 667Mhz on my 3810TG. It works! Now my RAM runs at 667MHz instead of 800Mhz, and battery life is better! It seems to save around 0.5 to 1.0W power consumption, and I don't notice any slowdowns yet.

I notice that the option is either AUTO or 667, and it controls the RAM multipler. Does it look like there's an option to make the RAM run at 1066MHz?

Its funny that Acer ships our Timeline 3810s with DDR3-1066 RAM but it runs at 800MHz.

I see you did that with a SU9400. Was it necessary to do a hardware mod (soldering) or did you do it solely through software?

Battery life...any thoughts after the mod?

No need hardware mod. double clicking OC_RTM875T_250.exe is enough :) it is stable so far so good. But since i recently start using no comment about battery life yet.

Actually it is possible to reach 1862mhz (266fsb, DDR3 1066mhz) you have to update pll control register byte count 00 to 80 with setfsb but sudden restart happens after update. After os loads it shows 1862mhz and seems stable

Ya I am wondering how this will work on a 1810T. My system uses 800 RAM so I am going to guess I would have to use the second executable????

Also can it damage the system at all? The graphics are only Intel.

Just sharing my experience with BIOS recovery on the 3810TG.

I messed around with some unlocked BIOS settings that made my 3810TG unable to boot (not even to the BIOS screen).

I tried removing the CMOS battery (which is accessible from where the RAM slots are) to clear the CMOS but it was no use.

The only thing that worked was the emergency BIOS recovery procedure described before:

    - Format a USB memory stick with FAT32.
    - Download and extract the BIOS for the 3810TG.
    - Copy the .exe and the BIOS file (e.g. JM3100FR.120) from the DOS directory to the root of the USB memory stick.
    - Rename the BIOS file to JM31x64.fd

    - Plug the USB stick into the laptop. Power on while pressing Fn-ESC.
    - If the procedure is working, you should see the USB memory stick access light blinking.
    - Wait a while for the BIOS to flash (the CPU fan should spin loudly when its flashing) and the laptop will reboot by itself.

I tried using SPYDER2PRO and the output somehow is really messy.... for a workaround, I just adjusted the blue brightness slider to -11. That seems to neutralize the blue tint(LED backlit screens tend to be bluish).

    Hello

I realized that the fan kicks in 'high-gear' when it's plugged on to the AC. Besides that, if you update it to the latest BIOS (1.23), there shouldn't be a problem.

I kinda hate the keyboard though as the retainer for the Timeline 3810T goes sticky after awhile. Have to return to my service center to get it fixed, luckily it's covered under the warranty.

the fan is pretty much nonexistant on battery, but does get to a noticable level if you're watching a video or something.

this is actually a power option, where you can specify whether you want active or passive cooling

ok, I tested it myself and then I runned back to 1.17. To me, this version is the best sience the fan is really verry silent. If you have CPU idle sometimes it even stops the fan!... The battery is ok and it has the suspend glitch.

Got another new version of the 3810T BIOS available.... now at version 1.27.

Dated 4/26/10 - v1.27 Supports 2 new Bluetooth devices: Atheros AR3011 and Broadcom BCM 92070 for Bluetooth 3.0

I wonder when will ACER ever disclose full changelogs of the BIOS. I'll download this, but will not install it until I read reviews of it.

Generally I'm very pleased with the 4810TZ, but recording from the built-in microphone or an external microphone produces very faint recordings (maybe 5-10% of normal volume). I'm using Sound Recorder in Windows 7 64-bit, with latest Windows / Acer driver for the Realtek sound device - have also tried the latest driver from Realtek.com.tw.

I've done all the normal tweaks - turn off all effects, set auto gain control, set input level to maximum, try boosting one mic channel more than other, setting +30 dB boost, etc.

I did get slightly higher recording levels in Skype 4.2, but still not enough to be usable (less than 20%). Even shouting into the mic doesn't get that much playback volume.

I've seen some reports that the mic and sound recording used to work fine on Vista.

Has anyone out there had success with recording on the 4810TZ, using any non-USB microphone, internal or external? Would really like to hear from people using any Windows version, XP/Vista or 7, and even Ubuntu if that works.

This is for a client who needs reasonable quality speech recording for her work with children using this laptop, so any help would be really appreciated!

I think the orange blinking light at the front means that your wireless connection is active, and that there's some program - if not your web browser, then in the background - accessing the internet.

Hi, I am sure you already know that it blinks when the battery is below 10%. If your battery is full or above 10% and it still blinks, you may try to charge the battery with machine shut down.

    Good luck.

It's quite a coincidence if the battery stopped working right after a bios update.
Try flashing one of the very old bios and see if charging resumes somewhat.

yeah i already tried that: flashed back to 1.24 / 1.20 / 1.17 and even 1.15, nothing helped. i contacted acer now with a detailed description of this problem and they said that this was a hardware based problem, thus i should send in my laptop for repairs! now that sucks big time, since i need it constantly for work and studies...

anyone have any experience with this and could tell me how long it aproximately takes the acer service to send back the laptop?

    cheers

Ummm I am seeing that u have oc'd you cpu to 1.75 is that right? Was it a hardware oc or software? Better consider that as well if you are sending it in for repair.

software oc via modified setfsb pll code. no problem there, temps were always pretty low and primestable. the oc automatically resets everytime u reboot, so that shouldnt be a prob :) ill also consider taking out my hdd, i dont think its necessary for the repairs and im not that intend to showing off my data to prying eyes ;-)

    cheers

I posted something of this nature before.... What OS were you running when the battery went dead?

oh really? can u send me a link to that post? i was and i still am running win7 prof. x64. it was running fine for like 9 months now, the thing with the battery just started right after my BIOS update to version 1.27. and as i mentioned before, the battery itself isnt dead, it still recharges and drains normally, i just dont have a readout on the momentary charge level (stays at 0%) and also, the front LED keeps blinking orange, no matter what.

    cheers

May I ask which clock gen you've selected for the 3810tg? Also can you de-synch the PCI frequency through SetFSB? Running the PCI bus 30% over stock seems a bit cavalier IMO.

    Best regards

    im back guys!

acer service just took 8 days to get the laptop back to me. they swapped the mainboard and also put in a new battery. everythings working in perfect order now again :)

    @boissez
im using an automatic OC-program thats derived from SetFSB, u can check it out for urself if u like: OC_RTM875T

As you can see its using the RTM875T PLL by Realtek to overclock the FSB to either 167 or 250 Mhz (one .exe file for each case included here). And theres nothing cavalier about that actually, since the chipset is very well equipped to handle standard PCI speeds of up to 1066 Mhz (4x266). I checked the technical manual for the GM45 series myself, there even seems to be a hardware switch located on the mainboard to permanently switch to 1066 FSB. And yeah, as i said before, the OC proved to be Prime-stable, temperature problems are non-existent and all in all, the laptop handles the OC totally fine :)
Concerning my problem with the battery, it had nothing to do with the OC. Its just that the BIOS-Update ed something up in the system.

    Cheers!
