Thanks alot... the code is that AL10D56 - obviously different from mine; the shape also differ so they are not compatible. Silly politics Acer, makes us buy different batteries...

It is all relative unless you know of an international standard for the definition of light and heavy. As I said, for me, it is a big difference. Also, with the larger battery the 3820 goes up to 4.9 lbs. Not sure if the bigger battery is necessary for the 8 hour run time.

I think the 1830 / 1810 remains unique as it is capable and only ~3 lbs.

First review I could find about the core i5 1830T (in german but google translated for your convenience) :

    Google Translate

doesn't say much except that it feels snappy and that you get about 6h with wifi turned on, some browsing and music playing in the background (I think that's what he meant, google translate can sometimes boggle the mind).

Also : "The Aspire creates without batting 1080p - FullHD clocked so high, and in so doing not even the CPU usage is below 25%."

It is low when compared to discrete graphics (for instance the macbook is around 4700) but for integrated its not bad!

The 1810 had a score of 594 according to Laptopmag.com so this is quite an improvement!

Thanks again for posting the benchmarks nirslsk!

I just pulled the trigger and ordered one... should be here tomorrow ;)

You did great. The nice thing about the free version of 3Dmark06 is you can't change any options, ergo everyone uses the same settings. :)

1097 is a little lower than I was expecting. I bet bumping up to 3 GB or 4GB of RAM would help it a bit. For comparison, my Acer 721 scored 1297 with 3GB. You CPU score was much higher than the Acer 721, of course--close to double, as expected when comparing a dual core vs. a single core.

Anyway, this is still nearly twice the graphic power of the old 1810t, and should be adequate for playing WoW or similar games at low graphic settings. Thanks for running the test!

Darn it, both amazon.com and newegg.com have the AS1830T-3721 in stock, but neither amazon.ca nor newegg.ca list the model. NewEgg ships most of my orders from the US anyhow, so it's annoying that I can't order it in Canada :(

Oh well, I guess it'll be here soon...

I'm a little skeptical that the i5 version is really in stock at Newegg, but being the optimistic sort that I am I put an order in anyway with rush processing. Maybe this is Newegg's birthday present to me?

So far I've gotten the "successfully charged your credit card" email. We'll see how much further it goes.

Amazon is listing a rather long shipping time for the i5 (1-2 months, versus "in stock" for the i3), but NewEgg will not let you even order an item unless they have it in stock. So unless I'm mistaken, if you are even able to add it to your cart, it's in their warehouse.

All the available models have black brushed cases. Will Acer still be offering the supposedly finger print/smudge resistant silver groove-like cases for the 1830t/tg series (depicted in the videos and pictures scattered over the web)? If not, then Lenovo really has to lower the price on the U160 and offer different colors than brown and red.

Congrats! That is good news indeed. When you or anyone else gets their unit I'd be very interested to know if you observe the same problem I'm having with my touchpad right button, it being lower/weaker and not registering clicks, or any similar issue.

Just for comparison, I ran Passmark on my Acer 721 (all Passmark options at default). Here was what I got compared to the i3 model results. (Keep in mind the Acer 721 has a single core processor.)

    PassMark - 359.4 (721) 540.2 (1830t)
    CPU Mark - 587.9 (721) 1214.6 (1830t)
    2D Graphics - 152.5 (721) 141.6 (1830t)
    3D Graphics - 95.2 (721) 179.9 (1830t)
    Memory - 377.3 (721) 454.8 (1830t)
    Disk - 430.7 (721) 483.9 (1830t)

It's interesting that the Passmark 3D score was higher for the 1830t, but the 721 scored higher in 3Dmark06 (1297 vs. 1097). I'd be curious to find out how that translates into real world game performance. :)

Well I now have a tracking number on the i5 430UM version I ordered from Newegg this morning. It should be here by Friday. I'll post some benchmarks when I get it and maybe it can help you decide. I'm happy to be a guinea pig if it means I get a new toy. :D

The Core i5-520UM Version of the 1830t is already available here in Germany.
But i can't find any reference anywhere about a wwan/umts version.
I really would prefer the 1830t over the 1810t because of the speed boost, but without wwan it is completely useless for me. (Yes I know there are USB sticks for that, but it doesn't quite feel right ^^)

I can't believe how quickly these are going.. I had mine preordered to replace my i3-330UM 1830T with funky right touchpad button, and I was this close to cancelling it a few hours before it became available. Man am I glad I didn't, although knowing my luck it's probably going to have something horribly wrong with it :)

I'm saddened these are running out so quickly (1 left on amazon at the time of writing!) but maybe this'll finally usher in an age where 11.6 inchers come to replace netbooks altogether, and the market will be flooded with high quality, cheaper entries from many other companies. Amen.

Hmm, worth the wait from the 430UM, you think? Maybe we'll get lucky and the 520UM will be released in the next few days--like the 430UM was--as opposed to the next few weeks/months.

The screen is beautiful, if you've seen the 1810T it's the same one or one that's very similar. It could be a bit brighter, meaning that I use it at 70% brightness rather than 50-60% with some other laptops I've tried, but it really does look very good.

The 520UM is slower than the 430UM for the regular clockspeed (430 is 1.2GHz, 520 is 1.06GHz), but the 520UM has higher turbo (430 is 1.73GHz, 520 is 1.866GHz). It's hard to say in that situation if one is better than the other.

The only other difference is the 520UM adds VT-d (the 430UM still has VT-x), trusted execution, and the AES instructions. Of those, the AES instructions are probably the only things you might care about, and even then if you're not using bitlocker they're probably irrelevant.

I'd say that the 520UM isn't worth waiting for, because it's not even clear if it's actually better than the 430UM. If all else was equal (available at the same price at the same time), I might pick the 520UM, but if it cost more or I had to wait, I'd pick the 430UM.

Can someone confirm if the case of the 1830T is as shown in the Amazon photos (mainly the screen lid) with the grove-like texture and does it attract finger prints and smudges? The pictures of the larger TimelineX series on the web show a regular brushed black chasis and the reviews say that it's a finger print magnet.

    A humble request:

World of Warcraft framerate using i5 430UM CPU and minimum resolution and effects settings. I'd like to see some raw framerate numbers for solo combat in the open plains and then one for just standing around in a dense city, please. Thank you!

My wife and I both play. She's using an HP 12.1 model with a single-core AMD CPU and 3410 Radeon and gets decent performance (except when in dense cities).

And if anyone here still plays Halo (the original, Combat Evolved), I'd love to see framerates for a 16-player Blood Gulch heavy weapons server (worst-case scenario)... :)

I know the new Intel IGP is decent, but I also know it struggles with intense shader content.

Is this currently the best 11" model?

    http://j.mp/arOEp6

The model is the Acer Aspire TimelineX AS1830T-3721 (1.20GHz Core i5 430UM). Looking at this plus an 8GB RAM and 500gb Seagate Momentus XT hybrid HDD/SSD upgrade. How bad is the RAM/HDD upgrade?

That is the 2nd best model. There are i5-520UM models, but they are not in the US yet. Upgrading ram and hard drive should be as easy as unscrewing some panels on the bottom.

If you can wait, the AS1830T-3721 i5-430UM model is $615 shipped (assuming no tax in your state) after Bing cashback from Tigerdirect. Showing up backordered for my order, but at that price I can wait a week or two. Good bye trusty Thinkpad...

I agree with that assesment. It's almost certain that the 520um model will be more expensive unless it replaces the 430UM alltogether.
