OK after having measured them, the thread appears to be 2mm wide and 5mm long. However, I can't find any screws of this length on Ebay or on online stores...

I've submitted a ticket to Acer, but they've not yet gotten back to me. Can anyone help?

I have the 1830 with the Synaptics touchpad but the driver just shows it as a "Standard PS/2 Pointing Device" and it doesn't allow me to setup any gestures. That's with the default system image. I even tried to download the latest driver from the Acer website, and also the standard driver from the Synaptics website and nothing worked.

I'd love to know how to get a driver installed that lets me do scrolling and other gestures.

I want to add 8GB to my i7 Acer 1830T and the memory bus speed is 800 MHz according the the specs of the i7-680UM processor:
Consumer Ultra-Low Voltage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

...and Acer's spec sheet from the i5 version of the 1830:
However, recommended and included memory is PC3-10666 which has a bus clock of 667 Mhz according to the DDR3 wiki:
DDR3 SDRAM - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wouldn't the ideal memory be PC3-12800 according to the both specs?

No, the maximum memory speed is 800MHz DDR, or 400MHz (PC3-8500), not 1600MHz DDR. What's included is 1333MHz DDR, or 667MHz (PC3-10600) that just runs under its rated speed.

OK, now I understand. Unfortunately I had already ordered the pc3-12800, can it run as the slower speed with the same lower CAS latency as the pc3-8500?

    Hello,

I will upgrading the Broadcom wireless card to either an Intel 6200 (2 antennas) or the 6300 (3 antennas). I bought both and will return one. I also ordered an extra antenna cable. I am going to try the 6300 first. I have a Buffalo 3x3 450Mbs router. How should I go about routing that third antenna cable? Should I use the full length and just wrap it around the perimeter? Or can I cut it? I doubt I'll be able to get up into the screen area.

    Thanks,

    NN

Cutting it is not a good idea. Try to use it as it is and while routing it avoid CPU and chipset as much as possible. While HDD has no impact on wireless performance if an antenna is routed near it CPU does add a lot of noise.

Thanks. I don't plan on opening up the whole machine, just the door. Can I just coil it around the perimeter? It'll probably come back around on itself. Should I just stick with the 2x2 card instead? Has anyone here put in a 3x3 card?

    Thanks again,

    NN

OK if anyone else needs screw for their 1830t, the ones for the base panel are M2x5mm. Took a while to get there, but she's now all screwed up together again.

    Hi everyone

I have a fixed idea. I want to upgrade this notebook with a graphics card. Is anyone here who have any idea how to manage with this task?

    Thanks in advance.

    UPD:
As I understand, I need a free pci port to do this. I don't think I should use usb 2.0 for this task.
I know that there is mini pci (wi-fi chipset), but I don't think that it's a good idea to use this port.
Second, core i7-680. As I understand ( http://ark.intel.com/products/49664), there is an opportunity to use support PCI-e 1x16. That's I need to do. But does anyone know, is it available on this notebook?

    Hey folks,

I just blew out my 1410 SU2300 after two plus years of heavy use (water accident). I'm looking for a replacement and honestly, I think laptops are consumables vs investments so I'm looking at 1830 (used/refurb/etc). I'm seeing ~$300 on eBay. Any thoughts on refurb models (through Acer or otherwise), how they are holding up, etc. I would like to at least equal batt life of my 1410, which is about 5+ hours now.

    Thanks.

I just changed the drive by the famous Crucial M4 128GB.
I'm disappointed by the performance. Particularly the 4K.

    I tested both

I find it interesting that HP, Dell, Asus and others now have decided there is a market for the very thin lite weight notebook. I love my 1830T which I got for myself a year ago as a Chritsmas present. This year I built myself a new desktop with all the latest gamer hot items eventhough I am not a gamer. Next year for Christmas I can see the need for a new upgrade to my 1830T. I think a little larger screen, more power, very thin and very lite. It will be a sad day when I stop using my 1830T, maybe one of my granchildren will need a great little machine for school.

Has anyone noticed that XD/NX is disabled on the 1830T and there is no option in the BIOS setup to enable it? I don't understand why they would leave out an option to take advantage of hardware-based security that is available in the Core i-Series processors. Has anyone found a way to enable it?

I bought a used Acer Aspire 1830T-3927, installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and updated all drivers but still have an issue with the Graphics Subscore on the WEI. Regardless of how I configure the Graphics with Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel, the highest score I can achieve is a 2.4. I've tried different RAM configurations original 2+1 3GB, single 4GB and 4+2 6GB and all have netted nearly the same results 2.2 - 2.4 Subscore.

    Proc 4.1; 6GB RAM 5.0; Graph 2.4; Gam Graph 3.2; 320GB 5400RPM Prim HD 5.8

    Please PM me if you have any idea of what settings could affect the score so negatively. Whoops, no access to PM's. c o n m e t a l @ g m a i l . c o m (no spaces of course)

    Thanks in advance

P.S. This laptop also suffers from the missing screws near the hinges. The corner near the usb port is now completely broken off. I retrofitted a screw in there that's holding for the moment but I'm contemplating ordering a new base and screw set from ebay ($45 investment).

If anyone does find a fix for this, I would love to know. Windows 8 requires XD/NX and without it you can't install the OS even though the hardware is otherwise more than capable of supporting it.

Among other models, Acer has committed to supporting drivers for Windows 8 on the AS1830T series. I would hope that includes a BIOS update to enable NX/XD, but I have yet to see anything. I've contacted Microsoft about it and as of now they have been working on something behind the scenes, but I don't know if/when that will become available for the rest of us. Meanwhile, maybe somebody can contact Acer to bring this to their attention? I am out of warranty (by only a few months), and had I realized they were doing this sooner I would have contacted them.

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense to offer Windows 8 drivers when there's no way to enable XD. It's such a stupid issue too, XD is so very basic that you'd figure it would be enabled by default rather than disabled. There's no virtualization enable/disable option in the BIOS either, but at least that defaults to enabled.

I would hope if someone hears something they'd post it. My 1830 is also out of warranty, but I'm tempted to call Acer just to see if they have any position on the issue.

If you boot directly from a DVD or USB drive and install Windows 8 that way there's no XD requirement. If you're installing from Windows to do an upgrade you can also get around the error by using setup.exe from the \sources folder. Just did it myself earlier this evening on my 1830T and Windows 8 runs just fine.

I've had mixed results with that. For example, since the Release Preview I can no longer run Windows 8 x86 or x64 in a virtual machine because when I tell the hypervisor to expose PAE/NX support, it can't because the BIOS won't even allow it to be exposed to the host OS. Even booting from an ISO in the virtual environment won't overcome that.

What really burns me is that Acer provided no facility, even in the BIOS setup, to say "I know what I'm doing, enable NX." As I stated before, it was completely unnecessary, if not irresponsible for Acer to disable a hardware security enhancement (which NX is) in the BIOS then provide no means to enable it.

I am considering the same, swapping the Broadcom for an Intel 6200. However, when I look online, there are many varieties of 6200 Intel cards. They look to be the same size etc.but have different numbers and some different (more advanced wifi specs it seems). Which exact number should I get? My machine is an Acer 1830T-68U118

    Thanks,

I finally managed to get my 1830. :-D

I am a fan of the 11,6" format. I'm currently using the Aspire Timeline 1410 DualCore Celeron SU2300 but wanted to upgrade to a more powerful platform.

I purchased a refurbished one from ebay. i7 with 4gig and 500Hdd. It rocks but the system came to me with a bare windows 7 and lacks some conveniences activating-deactivating functions, etc.

I was willing to experience the Original Windows7 from the 1830. I think I can use the recovery disks from the 1410, but I'm sure that the 1830's ones are more updated.

Does anybody want to make a few $$ making a copy of the recovery disks for me? I'll pay for the disks, the work and the shipping.

You can get the recovery disks from Acer for $19. That should not break the bank. You can probalby find a set on ebay for less than that.

Has anyone had a problem with the Ethernet port. Mine has always been spotty and now I have to fiddle with the cable to an exact angle and pressure to get it to work. Is this common? Any fixes? I'm happy to pop the hood if need be.

I would like to follow up on my situation: I went ahead and ordered a replacement power jack from Ebay, it was about $9 USD.

Desoldering the old one one was easy enough, and as is soldering on the new one. Note that there are 7 pins that you need to solder.

    Everything is working perfectly now.

I've been waiting for Acer to release a BIOS with the same feature enabled for over 2 years and it still seems no luck.
I'm now seeking for someone who can help with modifying it to unlock the hidden menu.

I looked into that, but I don't think anyone has released a custom BIOS for this model. Please let me know if you have any good news about that. The sad thing is that this computer isn't even two years old yet and I'm debating whether to replace it with a Surface tablet + Touch Cover. The only thing standing in my way is that getting the RT is the same price as this computer was two years ago, but can't run x86 apps, so it's looking like the Surface Pro will likely be around twice that price.

Unfortunately, guys, don't hold your breath for an Acer BIOS update. Acer has already said, "Due to hardware incompatibility," the 1830T does not support the upgrade to Windows 8 -- see Windows 8 Upgrade Offer .

The W8 Consumer Preview expires on January 15, 2013, and that's the end of Windows 8 on the 1830T. To run Windows 8 on notebook smaller than 12", you will need either a V5-171 or a Vivobook. Let's hope more choices come out later.

Actually, that doesn't seem to be the case. If you look at Acer's support site for drivers and software, they've provided updated drivers for Windows 8, including an updated touchpad driver that has Windows 8 gesture support. I'm running it on my 1830T right now and it's working very well. As for NX, the RTM version of Windows 8 manages to enable it in spite of the locked-down UEFI in the computer.

It's pretty straight forward. I just ran the Windows 8 Pro download from the Microsoft Store. It will guide you through an upgrade or give you the option to create a USB memory stick with the bootable installer, if you prefer to do a clean install.

Thank you for letting everyone know, blkballoon925!

Windows 8 build 9200 is working great on my 1830T now. The install didn't ask at all for Acer drivers.

You saved me from shopping for a V5-171. I want my next 12"-below laptop to have over 8GB RAM, and, thanks to you, I can wait further for that. Cheers!

You're welcome. And no, it doesn't require drivers to run, but for the best experience I'd download Acer's drivers, especially for the SATA controller, chipset, and touchpad.

ok so there's a spot for this and acording to some sources this should work any ideas? In the empty mini PCI-e Express card Slot i wanna put in a ssd like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0085J17UA/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER there in that pcie slot if i can. i have experiance with sodering and whatnot so thats no problem i just wanna know what else might be needed to get this all working.... i'd love to hear advice or anything from any other owners...

Update: ok so i did some research and i guess someone got a 68U118 in europe and that has the minipci-e slot on the board and thats normally empty on usa models, from what he said he attached a 32GB SSD and it all works.... im not really worried bout the 3g i got a usb one that works fine...oh and i got this wifi card, Intel Ultimate N 633ANHMW IEEE 802.11n and scrapped the bluetooth sence i dont really use it anyway the only thing was had to run a new wire to the card cus this one has 3 points and stock has 2.... so now my next thing on the list is a extended battery and a matte screen anyone care to help me find some? Please?!?

Update: so i compleatly took this pc apart and realised that the bluetooth is a seprate module so i turned on the manager and poof it works still... and found a matte screen for it too but not sure if its really worth it... any ideas or opinions?

I thought I'd add my two pence worth. Just upgraded the hard drive to a crucial m4 on my acer 1830t-68u118. What a difference, boots in 12 seconds, runs a lot cooler and feels a lot zippier. I'm running lubuntu 12.10, works out the box though I haven't tried the webcam or mic. It does need proprietary drivers for the broadcom wireless though I note that Acer aren't consistent with the wireless cards that they use so this may be different.

Did you have a crucial m4? Slightly worrying but I'd heard typically that they're quite reliable. They come with a 3 year warranty so you shouldn't have any problem getting a replacement.
