I think the 1830T will be an improvement over the 1810T, for sure. Maybe not too big, thought.

However, I think acer should not only focus on the "hey! here its new i3/i5 ulv laptop!" but also on other things which would make it a killer laptop like:
    - Aluminium body version
    - Beside aluminium, bring a nice silver mate finish.
    - Mate screen
    - Include the damn 2nd mini pci-e connector and also why not sim preinstall?
    - Bluetooth 2.1... not that difficult. Its 2010
    - Focus on quality, not only price. Better quality lowers RMA, which results in money savings

Yes didn't you know this model i7-640UM? Same TDP of i5 but better performances. I think that only this model will perform better than SU9400...

Webcam VGA is now ridiculous, you can find 1.3cam for laptop at like 2$...

USB3.0 is a must, acer maybe doesn't look at asus models... unbeliavble

The 1410-1810 was something completely new from Acer and the market-consumer rewarded them. The 1830t seems more like a refresh(maybe that's what Acer intented in the first place) it doesn't bring anything really new to the table.Fortunately for us the consumer again will be the ultimate judge.Companies that take consumer loyalty for granted end up hurting their bottom line(see VISTA).

Yes they certainly have a hot product, I'd never in my life would imagine I'd buy an Acer(Gateway) laptop but given the quality ODM it doesn't really matter what brand you buy anymore. If it came out a year earlier our laptops would've been classified as a subnotebook priced in the $1500-2000 range.

    1. Blame Intel for dragging their feet due to Lightpeak. Come next year you may want Lightpeak ports instead.
    2. The lid is not even glossy anymore and the Travelmate 8172 has a matte screen.

Heard of the Travelmate 8172 which will have a matte screen?

In the 3820t official timeline thread someone quoted a German site about those Travelmates and they are also supposed to have nvidia 310 or 330 graphics card to which sounds great in a 11.6"

I don't really recall what all the arguments were about why the 1810T would still be a good choice now, but that thing looks awesome and I would wait for it.

I read that the New Intel HD Graphics is a lot better than the outgoing Intel GMA 4500MHD....

Its seems we will now be able to do some respectable gaming on the 1830T..?!?

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-clarkdale-core-i5-661,2514-4.html

"As a general rule, if you’re working with 3D, this is not the GPU you’ll want to use. If your games of choice are online, in 2D, Intel’s HD Graphics processor will likely suffice."

    http://www.zdnet.co.uk/reviews/cpus-desktop/2010/01/05/benchmarks-intels-32nm-clarkdale-39966987/

"The new integrated GPU, called Intel HD Graphics, supports DirectX 10.1. The new GPUs strengths lie in better video acceleration rather than 3D performance (although it also offers better 3D, the improvement is minimal for more demanding 3D games)"

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/2901/4

"We’ll start off with Batman: Arkham Asylum. This is an Unreal Engine 3 based game. The first thing you need to remember about integrated graphics is that regardless of the game, you’ll want to go in and turn down every single quality setting at your disposal. In this case I ran Batman at 1024 x 768 with all quality options set to low.
Batman doesn’t look half bad at the playable IGP settings. It’s surprising. Tim Sweeney once told me that a good looking game is half engine, half art. It looks like Batman just has that right combination of engine and art to make it look decent even on Intel’s integrated graphics. It’s not great by any means, but it’s not pixelated mush.
Next up is Dragon Age. Unfortunately, this game doesn’t look as good at its playable integrated graphics settings. It ends up looking like 3D Kings Quest played on a PS2."

edit : and this is with a full blown core i5, not the mobile i5 520UM kind...

    OK,
I will be on the road for 3 weeks solid in July. If the 1830T is available before then (and I have time to put in an X25-V 40 GB SSD) I will be buying my first non-thinkpad in 10 years. I have had two Xs and 2 Ts, and a T400 will still be my main computer, but I really want something smaller (and cheaper is nice too in the event of damage) to carry across 4 countries.

Be prepared to adjust to the keyboard. No where near as good as the thinkpad. Love the X25-V in my 1410T.

I'm so excited about this as its gonna replace my 3 yr old 15.4 5670. Need a ultraportable as soon as possible....

I read in the asus ul30jt thread that it is available for preorder in taiwan and one guy actually put in a ownership report. So i guess 1830T should be out soon since it uses the same CPU.

Guys in Europe... Do you have any news...? It seems you all get the new products before everyone else...?!?

Don't hold your breath! Still no news over here (and by here I mean the interwebz). You should ask the germans, as they seem to get everything first...

I'm waiting for it in Canada, even though I live in France. The price in canadian dollars is a joke compared to what we have to pay over here in euros. Also, I'm one of the few who actually needs the bilingual keyboard.

Not always true, but new Acer models often start to dribble onto the market in various European countries first.
Then across Asia.. China, Korea, Japan and Taiwan.
Takes two or three months to then become generally available in the US & Canada.
Although you may see a batch or two at Amazon or J&R beforehand.

Considering how slow the 3820t, 4820t and 5820t are taking to emerge,
we have a very long wait for the 1830T, especially in the US.
My guess is the 3820T, etc. fully available in the US by August 1st.
The 1830T fully available by November 1st.

Glad my little 1810tz can keep me warm till then.

Sandy Bridge starts production this fall with release in Q1 2011, probably at CES in January like Arrandale. And the 1830t will be out this summer, not November.

Just saw something for those interested in gaming :
    http://translate.google.com/transla...Next-Generation-ION-ION2-im-Test.29013.0.html
You can see some benchmarks for Ion2, but also for a core-i5-520M with Intel HD graphics (not so bad results, but still not good at all for 3D). Keep in mind that the 1830T will have a 520UM, so it's going to be even less powerful. But still, it's nice to have a comparison.

As for the september date, I think yus9 meant that it's going to be fully available (in stock at different stores) by september, even though some will have gotten their paws on it from online retailers or through import first. Usually, when Acer launches a new product, it takes several months to see massive availibilty (you know, for the normal folks who buy computers without reading a forum every day).

At this rate, the 1810s price won't drop in time for me to get a good deal. I hate buying stuff right before a price drop, but I need mine before June 11 since I need a netbook for E3.

The su9400 (AS1810T-6188) goes from 699$ to 819$ (Canadian dollars). The su7300 is a lot cheaper, so that's why people are still interested in it.

Is the su9400 really worth that much, btw? I haven't seen decent reviews about this one yet...

Is the brushed aluminum the only difference with the Olympic edition? I can't see anything in the specs.

Crappy???I strongly disagree.Do you really think a processor(SU9400) a year older than the SU7300 is worth an extra 120$???These two notebooks are exactly the same and if anything Acer is trying to pull a fast one by selling the SU9400 120$ more.

iFlaK I know it's strange but the olympic editions are not brushed aluminum at all. They are plastic. But they do have some better features.Bluetooth for example(even the 1410).And if you are lucky(no guarantees)you get 800Mhz RAM.Otherwise the differences are cosmetic.

Don't get me wrong, i am not calling the 1810t crappy, just the fact that this Olympic edition is nothing special, I mean i can already get a regular 1810t for $599. Usually when people mention the Olympic edition of the 1810t, they refers to the one with SU9400, so to me, this is a Acer trying to play a fast one on the consumer.

By the way, if i have a choice i would want a Olympic Edition with this spec:

    SU9400 or Core-i5 520um
    4GB DDR2 800 or DDR3 1066 RAM
80 to 160GB SSD hard drive
    for $699.

Now that would be worth the price of $100 over the regular 1810t

The upgraded CPU would be worth the $100 alone. The upgraded ram from the regular is worth $70 and the SSD is worth $150-$350. With all due respect, a bit unrealistic?

Don't forget you get some cost saving from not using the old component.

    So with that in mind:
-CPU upgrade from SU7300 to Core-i5 probably ~$35 if even that much...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumer_Ultra-Low_Voltage#Dual-Core_Processors
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_i5_microprocessors#Dual-Core_Mobile_processors

    -Ram upgrade <$10
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...re=ddr2_800_2gb_laptop-_-20-233-079-_-Product
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...e=ddr3_1066_2gb_laptop-_-20-134-693-_-Product

-SSD upgrade: ~$70, for a 64GB version SSD
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139133
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...136560&cm_re=320gb_2.5-_-22-136-560-_-Product

so together maybe about $115 worth of upgrade from a stock 1810t (acer will probably get a better deal then newegg lol). So yes $699 is defiantly a doable price point.

So we know Acer can release a core i5 with SSD at $699 price point. But why would they want to if they can charge for $800+ and still short on supply :(

This is the ugly side of supply and demand, unless we choose not to buy the new 1830t, Acer can defiantly get away with charging a higher price for giving us less :(

No. I got my 3810t with an SU9400, 500GB HDD for $899 when it first came out. Weeks later that same machine but with a 160GB G1 Intel SSD came out and I'm pretty sure it was cheaper.

Acer would buy enough ssd's at a bulk price to not increase the price of the machines by that much.

I would gladly pay $800 for an i5, 4 GB, and an 80 GB (X-25M) SSD, because I expect that I will end up buying one with a lame HDD in the $650-700 range and having to add an SSD. I'm starting to have way to many 2.5" 5400 RPM drives laying around pulled from machines.

Thundernet, thank you. That was very helpful. Bluetooth would be very nice but it isn't a deal-breaker for me.

I have my heart set on the red but I've also been looking at the Olympic edition. There aren't a lot of the red models out there. I'm so afraid there is going to be a price drop while I'm asleep and I'll wake up and they'll be gone. I'm considering pulling the trigger at the higher price, which I hate to do. :p

That's nice to hear; I thought I was weird. All of my tech toys are red LOL. Camera, Cell, MP3, etc. The only reason I have a white PSP is because it's the Star wars model. ;)

I have the red Gateway models bookmarked too. They are 20.00 (USD) more, but they have the 500GB hard drives.

Hmmm, I can't find any of the models that say they have bluetooth. I realized I am going to need it for work and I hate dongles. (cause I'm a klutz)

I forget who it was - but somebody said the red acer really got the girls attention in the library. Chicks or professional look. hmmmmmmm. Unless, of course, you are a girl. :D

Amazon has a black 1810T-8639 with built-in BT, SU7300 & 4GB DDR2 for $599. I think they have a few other models with BT, like the olympic edition, but I read thru the specs on the 1810T-8638 to confirm BT.

    Bronsky

Edit: I went back and checked the Olympic edition, it apparently does not have bluetooth.

New Egg is completely out of stock of 1810T's. Best sign I've seen yet for a May release of the new Timelines.

On notebook.de you can find a 1830T with this processor:
    Intel Core i3 Prozessor i3-330UM (3MB shared L3 Cache, 1.20GHz)

Do somebody have some details about this one? I can't find it on intels webpage.. what is the difference to the i5?

I could be totally wrong here but I thing the 1810T never came out on red(just black and blue) in the States.Only the 1410 came in Red.Again I maybe wrong.
As far as bluetooth all the 1810T(Z) had bluetooth until the last shipment(model). The last models have dropped the bluetooth. Now there are only a few black 1810t left from the old batch that have bluetooth.Be careful there is an american 1810TZ olympic edition that doesn't have bluetooth. The Canadian olympic models have bluetooth...
    Confusing???Blame Acer.....

edit:I am wrong. It comes in Red.The 1810tz also comes in red.
