Just wanted to confirm what others have already said.. Micro Center seems to have discontinued the i5 model. Let's hope a refresh comes in stock soon!

ATI HD 5650 WITH switchable graphic
for MYR 2699 or converted as USD$861 as for today
Hopefully this time is not misprinted HD5650 as last time they printed HD5650 but actually is HD5470...

I want to ask if there's any other backup(s) that I need to do in case if I ever need to install a new windows 7? I used the Acer Erecovery and burned out 4 disk of the recovery and 1 disk of the application driver. I'm new to windows 7 and I want to make sure I have all the backups that I need to reinstall windows if I ever have to. I got the I3-350m model from amazon and will be playing sc2 sometime this week and I'll post my temps for comparison.

Does anyone has a disassembly guide for the acer 4820tg ? I'm still unsure how to disassemble it. I'm afraid that I'm gonna screw it up :( I need a guide that will get me to the CPU and GPU. Tutorials from other laptop models won't help cuz I can't just pry up the bottom part to get to the heat sinks. Its trickier than I thought...

You can find "service manuals" online for about $12. They have a complete disassembly process with pictures.

I've had a strange issue in the first few days with my 4820--whenever I use the control key to execute a command, the cursor refuses to move for about half a second. This happens when I use Ctrl+B to open firefox bookmarks or Ctrl+B to bold something in word, Ctrl+S to save, etc. Anything with the control key. Anyone come across this or know of a fix? It was an issue straight out of the box, with no changes to the OS.

I think you have to change a setting somewhere that blocks the mouse while the keyboard is in use. Check out the Synaptics settings (there should be an icon bottom right that will get you there).

Can anyone confirm that a 2.5" SATA II ssd is the proper size/type to put in the 4820? Sorry if that's a stupid question--I've never replaced a laptop HD before and I just want to make sure I order the right thing.

or Is there a shorter way to do so ? I finally found a disassembly guide btw.

There is a "Commonly Asked Questions" section on the first post for enabling bluetooth, installing ATI drivers, fixing the keyboard/touchpad problem, backing up recovery and driver discs, etc.

Just reminding people because these same questions keep coming up.

The Activation Backup & Restore is used for Windows 7 activation. It backups Acer's Windows 7 OEM key and Acer's OEM certificate, so that you restore activation on a clean install of Windows 7.

The Acer eRecovery is used to backup Acer's preinstalled version of Windows 7 Home Premium and Acer's default drivers for the 4820TG.

    These are two different things.

    +1

    I want pics and vid's.

I am pretty close to getting one of these, just tossing up wether i get the 3G version which also has the 640gig HHD, although i will probably end up getting a Seagate 500gig momentus xt hybrid gigger anyway.

Just dont like the thought of having a dongle hanging out the side when im on the move and on the net.

I just put this one in: Newegg.com - Corsair Force CSSD-F120GB2-BRKT 2.5" 120GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

    So, yes :)

Installation was easy! Just had to remove 5 screws holding the bottom panel onto the laptop, then remove two screws holding the hard drive to a metal plate, attach the new drive to the metal plate, plug it in, and replace the bottom panel.

    QFT.

I noticed TD/CC have the 4820TG listed with "Available While Supplies Last."

Can we expect an i3 refresh as well?

My local Micro Center doesn't have any ETA for another i3 shipment either.

Gotta hand it to Acer... release the laptop in the USA extremely behind the rest of the world, give retailers minimal supply, and refresh the line super quick. roflmao...

The new I3 is the 370M. It is already out in the Envy so, yea, we'll see it in the 4820TG before too long. I wonder if we will ever see high spec'ed models from Acer, given the inability of the company to meet current demand for any I5 model.

Have any of you guys tried installing the latest video card driver from the Acer website? If you choose a Windows 7 64-bit system and sort by date, the latest AMD(ATI) video driver is 8.713.3.3000, updated on August 17th. After installing the new driver, my GPU clock speeds are 100/150 as default. I can overclock them fine with AMD GPU tool, but why is the default speed so slow? Anyone else experience this problem?

It's not a problem. That is the idle speed of the GPU. When it is sitting at 100/150 you might notice that the PCIe is set at x1 not x16. As soon as it comes under load, the clocks increase to their designated speed and the PCIe bus resets to x16. I think I have some screen shots of this back in the 3820TG thread.

I thought i would share my input on the 4820tg I3-350m model. I just got done playing L4D2 for a good 35-45 mins with everything on high and no AA in single player mode. FPS around 50ish and got to a lowest at 30fps. The highest temp for the cpu was: Core#0 - 76C, Core#1 78C and the ATI went up to 79C. The laptop still has everything from the factory except I uninstalled the Acer game software. I also had winamp running in the background the whole time. GPU is stock. I can upload a pic of the cpuid temp monitor if somecan can tell me how to. Laptop was in a AC room around 82F. No notebook cooler was used. For those looking to buy one, check out frys. They have the notebook master u2 for $14 with a $10 rebate totaling to $4 after rebates.

Is there anyplace in the US that sells the AS4820TG-3195 (i.e. the i5 version) besides Microcenter? Microcenter's website states its only available in store and the two stores near me are out of stock.

    Thanks,

That's what I though too, but using the 8.713.3.3000 drivers I get much worse performance in Starcraft 2. I rolled back to the 8.6 driver for now.

Edit: Also, since I installed the 8.7 driver, the HDMI Audio Output is gone from Playback Devices. Rolling back the driver did not bring it back, and reinstalling the 8.6 driver still did not fix the issue. Anyone know how I can get this back?

Edit Edit: Okay I got the HDMI output device back. What I did was switch to Power-saving GPU (with hdmi monitor plugged in), then switched back to High-perofrmance GPU and it came back. woohoo!

For those of you who say that MicroCenter has the 4820TG in stock, Really? As of today, no models that I can find, and that was confirmed by customer service. If you disagree, please post direct link to it as my search has produced no computers on their site.

In Entrepreneur magazine, this computer is mentioned with i7 processor for $750 in September issue. I have tried to contact them (Entrepreneur) and find out where? No luck so far on this front. According to Acer, not available in USA yet. If you have one with the i7 processor, please tell me where and when you got one. Thank you from Desparately Seeking Laptop with i7!

I disagree with you. ;) Go to the links on the first post of this thread. The 4820TG is limited in each Micro Center location. That is probably why you didn't see any of the 4820TGs in stock because they are sold out at your location.

The 4820TG is even posted in the Micro Center papers you receive in the mail.

Thanks aylafan, but no so fast. First, I have no locations near me, I live in Phoenix. I called the webstore I assume, the toll free number I found on their site. The guy on the phone said he didn't find it, what can I say.

Second, I want the i7 processor! Not the i5, or the i3, i7 or bust! Like I mentioned in my post, Entrepreneur said the price point was $750, and the i5 add you sent me was $900. Somethings not right, maybe Entrepreneur is all wet. I was impressed by an i7 computer with a great battery life for $750. If the computer is going to be much more than that it would be time to re-evaluate as competition is out there if you get close to the $1000 price tag.

If you have an exact link out there anyone, please post as again I can't find it on the webstore. If not, give me the phone number of your local store. Remember, I don't want anything but the i7 though. Thank you.

There are no Core i7 4820TGs in the US. I've only heard about it from Asia/UK and it's no where near $750 (it is listed as $1200-1400). Entrepreneur provided the wrong information.

I concur with the information. Here is a link to that article in Entrepreneur magazine that speaks of an Acer TimelineX with an i7 for $750.

    The Power of the Portable

The computer is mentioned about 3/4 of the way down of the scrolling pages. I wish I could get some explanation from Entrepreneur but struck out calling them, and am still waiting for a response from someone I emailed there. I will post if I get a response, as I strongly feel the interest for an i7 for $750 would be huge if such an animal existed.

paulb767 - You will not find any laptop with a Core i7, a fast discrete video card, and great battery life for only $750. It's already tough looking for a Core i5 with a fast discrete video card at that price range. Maybe, in a couple years you'll find those specs for $750, but not at the moment.

Edited: That article doesn't list the Core i7 4820TG at $750. That's just the predicted base price for the most basic model of the Acer Aspire TimelineX 5820T and it is just linking to the Acer website. You're expecting too much for $750.

The TimelineX paragraph is not even an article. It's a brief summary of the TimelineX series.
