Aylafan, for those that didn't go to the link I posted here is what it says:

    Best high-end notebook PC
at a less than high-end price
    Acer Aspire TimelineX 15.6 Inch
    ($750)

There is no better PowerPC available at a non-PowerPC price than Acer's new TimelineX series. This notebook is less than an inch thick and boasts a whopping eight hours of battery life. The unit sports a crisp 15-inch screen, weighs about 5 pounds and its Intel i7 processor offers top-tier performance. High-end computer modeling for engineers will probably be beyond the TimelineX, but not much else will be. A great value for such a high-end notebook.

Do you see the underlined words I have to stress my point! Wow, I thought it says i7 processor! The link you are referring to on the website, is NOT part of the article in the paper magazine and is from Acer which I agree is a generic advertisement from Acer in which all three processors are mentioned.

First of all, how are you basing all of this on one little paragraph? This is not a full review or full article. It's a tiny, brief summary of the TimelineX series in general. Also, most articles with ($$$) means that they are talking about the base price and not the top model. I don't know how to explain this any clearer.

There are i7 4820TGs with switchable ATI 5650 sold in Malaysia and Thailand.
They are the 9 cell battery model version. These units runs hot and I have not seen any being sold in the US.
Plus the price in Asia is not 750$ ... More like 1200$+ with the i7s

Please do tell us if you can find the i7 + discrete graphics for 750$

Even slash gear does not agree with that price point of 750$ for a normal 5820T
    http://www.slashgear.com/acer-timelinex-1830t-3820t-4820t-and-5820t-priced-3083850/

Aylafan, I don't know how else to say it any clearer either. Can we simply agree that it is a poorly written article? It mentions in the ARTCILE, which as far as the computer we are discussing I posted the complete section on his computer, (again the link is not part of the paper magazine) only the i7 is mentioned! It touts this computer as the best high end PC. Well, I don't want to get into an agrument with you as to what the definition of high end is, but it appears to me, and probably many others that they are referring to the i7! This is high end! And they don't say starting at or from $750. This is my final comment on the magazine article. Thank you.

It's a poorly written paragraph. That is all there is to it. ($750) clearly means the base price for the Acer Aspire TimelineX 5820T and not the top model. Maybe, they got the Core i7 model and briefly wrote about it, but no where did they write a full article or even listed the full specs of the model they received. Sorry, to burst your bubble, but what you read is just a short paragraph some person wrote. You shouldn't take that webpage seriously. Hope you find a laptop that meets your needs.

I am breaking my promise of last comment. My father snail mailed me the complete article from the Entreprenuer magazine once he heard I was shopping for a laptop, which has a subscription of about 607,000 monthly subscribers according to what I read. My point being that this wasn't simply something that some guy posted on the internet, which I am well aware can't be taken for gospel. This is from a fairly reputable magazine. I would still love to get a comment from the magazine and their source.

If you can post the link to the full article or take a screenshot of the magazine article then that would be helpful. Then we can discuss this in a more professional matter.

Currently, there are no Core i7 4820TGs and 5820TGs sold in the US at this time.

Feel free to comment. I am just here to help people out and I would like to help you find a solution to this article.

Okay, here is the link. I scrolls for several pages, no need to post just click on it.

    The Power of the Portable

Yep, that is it above. Now, like I mentioned before this is a copy of what was printed in the magazine Entrepreneur. The only difference is, you obviously don't have the links that will take you to more info such as the various computers in the article as you do on this electronic web page.

Anyways, I think it is a rather dead issue, as it appears to be incorrect or misleading at best.

I just recently picked up the 4820 i5, and it's an awesome machine. I had my doubts about how the machine won't hold up in terms of quality, but I was quickly proven wrong.

I had the Dell S-XPS 16** and this laptop out-performs it by far.

I see that there are a few people here who has replaced their ODD with a HHD caddy. Could you guys take a picture for it for the rest of us to see how it would look like?

I would like to get this one, New 9.5mm SATA to SATA 2nd HDD caddy/adapter for e6500 - eBay (item 390216773528 end time Sep-06-10 02:58:18 PDT), but I'm afraid that it won't "unified" with the laptop.

    Thanks.

You will have to swap faceplates (they are held via clips... very easy process) but it will look perfectly OEM by the end of the day.

    Thanks!

So I'm assuming that the faceplates have a universal clips to hold them onto the caddy? What about the indicator light? I notice that one on of the pictures, there's a little hole..? Light indicator? But that would be cool if it had it's own light to indicate usage.

If anything, I'll get the caddy. I just installed a SSD and would like the extra HD to be somewhere useful.

That, and a 9-cell and it'll be my perfect little warrior for school. It's less than a MacBook Pro, it's better than any of those other laptops at Best Buy and it feels smaller than an Envy 14/Ideapad Y460.

Anyone here has comments about the 9-cell?

Unfortunately the clips are not universal. I had to shave off a clip from the Acer for it to fit on the caddy. Worst case just superglue the faceplate on, no one will know LOL.

There is no indicator light. The hole is probably for the manual eject (even though it won't eject anything, duh) and for the caddy faceplate to look as OEM as possible. It's irrelevant for us since we're switching faceplates anyway.

Finally got my SSD set up. Bad news - the Intel HM55 controller (chipset) doesn't like playing with the SSDs well, greatly reducing performance benchmarks. Click here and read from the top (continues on the next page as well) - includes my benchmarks: http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...thread-benchmarks-brands-news-advice-638.html

Good news - startup time was at least halved! Games start incredibly fast as well :)

    Hello Guys,

I am Abhishek from India. I am considering purchasing a Laptop urgently and i am considering the below Model:

    Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820T

    Specs :
    i3 Processor
    3 GB RAM
    320 GB HD
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    Integrated Graphics
    ~ 8 Hrs. Battery Life

Another Laptop that i am considering is the DELL Inspiron 14R with the same specs except that the DELL Lappy has Win 7 Home Basic.

Both the Laptops cost the same here.
I am not purchasing the Laptop for Gaming purpose. I would mostly be for College Work, Surfing and watching Movies occasionally.
Also, both these Models have i3 Processors and not i5. Most of the Discussion heer is of the i5 Processor.

Which one of these two will be my Best Bet in terms of Build Quality, Reliability and Good After Sales Service ?
    Please Advice.

of-course go for the acer one there is no question in that..dell Inspiron 14R has some serious heating issues you can read the dell reviews on its site..and acer one is better design and slimmer one..both the company's provide good after sales service although you would not need them and i would suggest you to go for the i5 one as i3 has some throttling problems..and can you tell me the cost in your country it cost $800 (37600 Rs) here..

    Hi Everyone

I bought the 4820tg last week but was in to the games today . I played Mafia 2 with all high settings and was alt-tabbin with everest to see the temps. I saw a 80-90C .Is that a cause of concern?

You guessed it right. The Price is Rs. 37,500 /- here in India for the Model that i have listed. It does not contain any External Graphics Card. Also, i5 is not an Option as that Model is not available in Stores.

I doubt that you will find the 4820TG as a special deal on Black Friday (in stores) because it is usually limited to specific laptops. However, you'll probably find some Black Friday discounts on Amazon.com or Micro Center that can be used to buy the 4820TG.

    hello everyone
i'd appreciate if anyone could compare acer aspire 4820TG with Dell studio/inspiron, and/or Sony Vaio E-series (Full HD)..
my usage would be mostly general with occasional gaming and some design software..
Also i came across a few reviews that criticized the poor keyboard built of the 4820, specifically the flex they experienced.. did anyone observe a similar problem on their machines?
also are there any other major issues with this notebook i should be aware of beforehand?
    Thanks in advance..

If you want to compare laptops, you should create a thread and fill out the form in the "What Notebook Should I Buy?" section. Then post the exact model of each laptop with full specs. I think you'll get a better response from there.

The keyboard is a personal preference issue. Some owners notice the flex and some don't. You'll have to test the keyboard in person and make your own judgement about it.

Could you describe what kind of performance issues this results in (e.g., slower read or write times, slower startup of applications, etc)? I was going to replace the 5400 RPM with a SSD, but now I'm thinking about waiting until the issue is addressed (if, that is, anything can be done about it).

    Check out this thread:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...ts-can-not-take-full-advantage-fast-ssds.html

The drive experiences much worse than expected random read and write times. However, applications start extremely fast, the startup time got cut in half from stock (17 seconds vs 34 originally). Imo, the upgrade is worth it, but don't buy a top-of-the-line SSD - get one of the cheaper ones since the speeds are capped.

    EDIT:
I decided to use the original 500gb Western Digital HDD in this $10 enclosure: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0314583 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...032&cm_re=nexstar_2.5"-_-17-392-032-_-Product

Works wonderfully well, and only requires power from one USB cable (comes with a Y cable, but it's not necessary - I am testing with a 3 foot long USB cable with a single plug and it works fine). Great solution to those who need a cheap external portable hard drive.

Got my 4820tg a few days ago. Pretty pleased thus far, but i'm experiencing a problem now and then where it refuses to switch to the ATI card. I get a message saying that it couldnt change because a program using the graphics was running, but i cant for the life of me figure out what it is... as theres no programs running in the task manager.

i'm planning to buy an acer 4820tg in a few days. so i'd appreciate if there are any Indian users here who could clarify the following:
    1) how would you rate the acer after sales service? (i'm currently based in delhi)
i heard acer comes with a 2 year warranty, which seemed quite generous, that is why i'm concerned if there's any catch here..
    2) also could you list down a couple of stores in delhi where i could get a sweet deal?
    thanks and regards

and don't forget to mention & post some pics here whichever u get..

Hey guys--I've come across another strange issue with my 4820tg. My right touchpad button is no longer working. I am able to get it to work after about three clicks, but then once it's working, any click (left or right) results in a right click operation. Additionally, the scrolling feature no longer works. I can ctrl+alt+del and hit cancel, and that restores the touchpad to its original state, still with no right click or scrolling operation, but that at least allows me to left click again.

My bluetooth mouse works find still, entirely functional. I re-installed the synaptics driver--no change. The computer is only a week old and I have a hard time believing its a hardware issue. Anyone else had this problem before?

    thanks for the info dude..
to be honest, i haven't checked out any of the HP notebooks, because of the repeated heating issues i keep reading about.. also i find them a bit over priced..
having said that, i'll try to check out the HP Envy in a couple of days.. also it would be great help if you could answer some of the new questions popping in my mind:
    1) does the HP Envy come with a comparable graphics card at a comparable price (i.e. around Rs.45000)?
    2) also if you are using HP Envy, would you say that you've experienced any heating issues thus far? and/or, any other issues with the machine for that matter..

    Thanks and regards

I'm actually using a targus 15" neoprene sleeve, and it fits like a glove. But then I have the 9 cell battery. The pay-off is that I can bring the laptop away for the day without the charger. :)

Did your laptop came with the 9-cell? If not, where did you buy yours? I'm a little hesitant on getting off eBay, but will do if it works.

    Not the 14".
The 13" and below don't have optical drives.

Laptop came in the configuration you see below. Battery is an original. It's heavy though. I DO love the fact that I can leave it on my lap for a long time, or just leave it on the arm of the chair while I'm busy, & I don't have to worry about overheating.
Bsically, The angle of clearance added by the 9-cell is a bonus. The weight is not.

Wow, this is an incredible thread for the 4820TG!

Hopefully I'll be able to buy this on Thursday (fingers & toes crossed) but before I splash my cash does anybody know how the 4820TG fairs against the 3820TG? I read somewhere that it is able to handle to heat better. Is the screen size and display a big difference as well? I'm fairly certain they have the same internal specs but can't see a physical difference as I live far away from a computer dealer!

Will the 4820TG be able to handle a game like Dragon Age: Origins at a reasonably high setting? In saying that, how do you think it would handle upcoming games such as The Witcher 2: Assasin of Kings?

I'm really, really, really considering this laptop for uni but just need to know these few things. Thanks! :)

The 5650 is a pretty powerful card. You may want to look at ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 - Notebookcheck to find what you need.

The 3820TG has dual fans, one for the CPU and another for the GPU. It's probably better off if you are going to game. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The 3820TG has dual fans, but the 14" isn't less suited for gaming unless you get the i3 version.

That I5-460M looks like a nice CPU. I really like the 450M version.

    Bronsky

Has anyone had any success Overclocking the 4820TG with Set FSB?
