Not much to explain really. just think maybe i should have saved up for something else. Its not a bad machine. quality wise it has a better keyboard then the asus i have had. the screen isnt bad. i get about 7500 at stock clocks which is very acceptable.

Im kinda eying a lenovo X201. which is what i had originally wanted to buy. i think thats why. because i never ended up with what i set out to buy.

Im gonna give it a shot later down the road in a day or 2.

    I tried crysis
All high except shadows med: 25-30fps, does not drop below 25 and occasionally gets to 40, very happy.

Battle field bad company 2: this was a bit harder
all settings high except shadows med and AA off but AF 8x.
min 25 max 45. Only dips below 30 when lots of smoke or a close up fire fight whith smoke inbetween. Other than that runs above 30fps and works great, very enjoyable =D.

    more tests soon!

Hello! I just purchased the AS4820TG-3195 from Newegg - it should be arriving by the middle of the week. I just had a few questions before it arrives:

    1. I plan to connect the laptop to an external monitor while at home. I am looking at the Dell Ultrasharp U2311H which has a resolution of 1920x1080. Will the ATI 5650 be able to output this resolution? I know games may not run this high but I was hoping to use 1920x1080 for photo editing.

    2. When connecting an external monitor is there a difference in quality between the HDMI and VGA out? The Ultrasharp monitor only has DVI and VGA ports so I would need to buy a HDMI to DVI adapter if I want to go that route.

    3. Do you recommend a clean install or will just deleting the bloatware from control panel be good enough? I have a copy of Windows Ultimate 7 and was thinking of installing but I didn't know if it would help/hurt performance.

    Thank you!

I have a 24" ASUS with 1920x1080 as the 2nd monitor. It works fine also HDMI audio works fine. Your adaptor should work fine. For the clean install look up the 3820 and 4820 thread many people have detailed instructions and driver install ordering and performance.

    2. VGA generally has lower quality.

    3. Just delete the bloatware.

With Newegg and Amazon currently out-of-stock, you could probably get a decent price for your 4820TG. ATM, you can get a refurbished X201 for under $1K from the Lenovo outlet. Notebooks are a big part of our educational and professional life, I would get the model that I wanted. What happens when you get the X201 and have buyers remorse again. :D

    Wut?

Person a: Do you recommend a clean install or will just deleting the bloatware from control panel be good enough? I have a copy of Windows Ultimate 7 and was thinking of installing but I didn't know if it would help/hurt performance

He just got an Acer with Win 7 Home Premium installed. He suggests installing a copy of Win 7 Ult (no one said it was pirated).

Person b: Install the Windows Ultimate IMO, basic is the most unnecessary Windows ever. Don't know why anybody rather to use it instead.

Talks about Win7 Basic, which hasn't been mentioned earlier. (Although there's no quote, I'm assuming this was in response to Skottema, since there's no one else talking about Win 7 Ult)

    Me: De1337 ze bloatware.

You: He means violate Windows copyright and install a pirated copy. Sounds like some pretty bad advice.

No one mentioned copyright or pirating.

Seems everyone's talking about different things...

As I see it, he just bought an Acer. He's also got a copy of Win 7 lying around, which he, of course, paid for. He is therefore wondering if he would get a significant performance boost by doing a clean install instead of just removing the bloatware.

Even if it is pirated, I don't see why that would be any of our concern. That's his choice. He's just asking us if it would help performance.

Because it would violate forum policy to suggest or talk about it here. If you look at the clean install thread, the moderators have edited it so much that it is unusable out of a fear that users would use the information to illegally upgrade their versions of HP to Pro or Ultimate. Doing it is a personal choice ... talking about it in the forum is not. We have been able to post a lot of detailed information in these threads about performing a clean install. It would be nice to keep it that way.

And, you are correct about one thing ... It was just my opinion of what he was suggesting. Maybe he did have an ultimate license just sitting on his bedstand waiting to be installed on his new lappy. :D Sure.

Well... I'm in the same boat as the other guy and spur of the moment, I just ordered a Dell E4310, so my Acer 4820TG is going back to Tigerdirect. Since everyone is out of stock, I figure if anyone is desperate enough, I'd be willing to sell mine instead of returning it. I'm not gonna take advantage of the shortage by asking for more than I paid for it, but I'd rather not lose any money on the deal when I can just as easily return it for a refund (I paid $800).
If anyone is interested, PM me before I return it in the next couple days.

that's good to hear, I actually intended on buying the HP 8440p this morning. Didn't even know of the E4310's existence until last night. Still don't know much about it since there aren't many in depth reviews on it... I found myself rarely using the GPU power of the 4820TG and as a result, getting really annoyed by the switch when I plug/unplug the laptop.

core i5 540m, 4gb ddr3, 128gb ssd, fully loaded for $720 in the Dell refurb outlet. Similarly configured brand new would cost over 3 times as much

The outlet is clearly the way to go. I would take the time to scan the Latitude thread. My business used Dell exclusively for nearly 10 years. We all had Latitudes and Vostros. The latitudes were very dependable.

We stopped using Dell exclusively because the on-site service started to become unreliable. Both my old Latitude and my Vostro are still in use by others within my company. The Latitude is 6 years old and has been incredibly reliable and the Vostro is 3 years old (less reliable due mainly to its 8600M GT GPU).

If I didn't need a GPU, I would probably have a Latitude or HP Elitebook. Good luck with it.

I dont normally play games. Is there anyway to fix the switchable graphics so that it maintains on Intel Integrated Graphics when I am on battery and also when I am on power?

In other words, i want it to be on Intel graphics ALL the time! I can't find the option to do that.

    Please help, thanks.

On a completely different note, I am having impromptu restarts at a rate of about one a day. While I'm at the office I run the laptop on battery. WiFi off & plugged in via LAN cable. I usually turn off the screen with the Fn+F6 shortcut if I'm leaving the room.
I haven't nailed it down yet, but it looks like when the laptop goes asleep at some point Windows or the laptop itself just reboots without a proper shutdown. I then get the usual black screen telling Windows did not shut down properly. I just continue with resume.
It also seems that if I close the lid the machine goes asleep as expected. But it will not resume Windows normally and a code is displayed on the black screen(make sense??)
These issues are not major but at the same time I would like to pin-point them.
I have Intel Rapid Storage Technology installed weather that makes any difference or not!

I understand, but the point of the matter is I shouldn't have to disable it. This was not happening on the stock Acer install, so it should not be happening now!

The only difference between the 450M and the 540M is AES and a little more turbo boost to 2.93GHz.

I got my sig laptop for a little over $1300, including the SSD/RAM update.

Hey guys... Glad to join this group!!

Just got my 4820TG yesterday , from mumbai for 45300 INR.

The build quality is great , I dont know what people were fussing about the so called "flex" .
I love the looks of this thing, and still cant imagine how acer managed to put so much meat into this and still kept it soo light and thin!!

For a core i5, and 4 GB RAM, I was expecting it to be rocket fast, but its just about normal ;) .

I havent spent much time on it yet though, will get more time today, yet the battery seemed to be good in the couple of hours i was on it , and didnt notice any heat .

I did get a blue screen dump initially when I was getting the Antivirus updated ( at the same time i tried to fidgit with the graphics switch) .

but since then, so far Alll Izz well :D

    Raviraj.

I just read that the 3195 model has been discontinued. Can anybody confirm this? Does anybody know why it has been discontinued? Is it going to be replaced any time soon? Does anybody even know where there may still be a 3195 in stock? I'm really upset to hear that it may have been discontinued because I missed out on getting one by no more than a few hours on newegg.com. Thanks for any help you can offer me.

Happened to me before. I dont know how i solved it, but after a while, (BIOS updates, OS updates), it ok now.

Though i have a problem, whereby if i switch off the wifi using Launch Manager in Windows, when i restart, its ON again! It just never remembers my last wifi settings (on/off) = always ON!

    Any one with same problem?

I've tried everything but that PCI driver is still not "recognizable"

    http://i53.tinypic.com/108e0bs.png

And my screen blackens after a minute, how can I disable it?

And there's some kind a high pitched noise coming from the fan :(

Update: The noise stops after I plugged the laptop in. It's happening at A/C power

Have you tried these drivers for the unrecognized device?

If by "blackens" you mean dimming, it can be disabled in advanced power settings.

The high pitched noise you're hearing is probably coming from your Intel Core i5 CPU (I'm not sure if this is 100% confirmed to be the source) and it's fairly common with the Core i series, not only with Acer.

Wow you really need to jump when the 4820TG is in stock somewhere otherwise you'll be SOL. I just heard from Newegg that my 4820TG shipped yesterday.

Has there been a consensus as to which hard drive I should install into my new laptop to replace the slow stock one?

Also, for a clean install, what Acer software do users here install? I only ended up installing epowermanagement on my 3810T but I wonder if that is even necessary.

I keep reading how people have run clean installs of Windows 7 instead of just deleting the bloatware. How come? Do you really gain more performance? What about the Catalyst 10.7 drivers? Have you all noticed a performance boost over stock drivers?

From my experience a clean install usually works better than just deleting all the bloatware. The registry and all the other nonsense might still stay in the computer (I'm not 100% percent sure so please, don't bash me on this if I am wrong) To me, when I do a fresh install, it feels like everything has been cleaned up.

I think of it as a car engine that has been used for a while. Even if you try to change the oil, coolant and etc, polish the parts and replace them with new ones, it will still be an old engine that might break down sooner or later. (Not that windows can haha) Doing a fresh reinstall is like ordering a brand new engine straight from the assembly line. Its free of any faults, any usage or any wear. Its clean! Just like a fresh install of windows. Then it gets used and abused again leading to a replacement. That's why its always a good idea to reinstall windows once to twice a year just to keep the system running smooth. Now that is just my opinion. If anyone feels like agreeing feel free to do so.

Now replacing windows comes with a risk. You must make sure you have all the drivers ready. There could be chances that some drivers might not work thus leading to more problems. But this thread is very helpful and if any problem comes we will be glad to help. Also, if you do decide to do a clean install, Bronsky has a guide on how to do it properly with this laptop.

I hope I helped you out understanding why its better to do a fresh install of windows rather than just deleting all the bloatware.

Hi guys, just a question : while doing the initial set up, my vendor said that this model does not allow us to freely partition the drives, so I was stuck with a C drive (225 * Gb) and a D drive (225* GB) .
Now I need to install Windows 2003 64 bit server OS in addition to the windows 7 (make my Laptop with dual boot option),
how can I do that without doing a total format and reinstallation? Ive heard of VM ware but im not that god at all this stuff.

Look for partition wizard home edition 5.0. Very easy to use.
Just resize one of the existing partitions, and create a new partition with the un-allocated space.

I do a fresh install to clean out any "extras" that weren't removed from the uninstall but mostly to partition the drive so I have a system drive and a user drive. I then configure all the user files to go to the D: by default using this website as a guide... Windows 7 Move the Users and Program Files Directories To A Different Partition | Tuts4Tech
