Hey, how hot are you AC power bricks? Mine seems a bit hotter than i think it should be >_>. Like when i touch it, its not hot but it is rather warm.

i must tell i dont have any problem with how fast it runs (dont have any slowdowns), but i think because of high temps the speed is constantly down to cool the cpu. High temperatures bother me the most -
I don't think decreasing the speed got anything to do with the temperature at idle, unless when you are gaming or doing something intense then the speed will throttle down to cool the cpu.
In my opinion, if the cpu is at constant speed it has something to do with the power options. For example you set its minimum processor state to 0%.
Have you tried using a cooler pad ? It is quite helpful. -
thanks mate. will try to post a review soon too!
-
I dont have cooler pad yet, but gotta have one in nearest future.
where can I check my power options? -
thanks Danny7GTX -
It can get as low as 46 degrees with the cooler, maintaining around 50 degrees average. I'm using the Cooler Master Notepal Ergostand btw
#You can check the power options by right clicking the battery icon at the bottom right hand corner of the taskbar.
#From there select Power Options.
#Then you'll see 3 power plans. If you're on high performance, go click it's "Change plan settings" and then "click change advanced power settings"
#The Power Options will show up. From there you should click "Power Processor Management" and then click Minimum processor state. You can experiment with it, changing its minimum state(both battery and plugged in) to see how your cpu will react.
My maximum processor state is always set at 100% and Minimum set at 15%.
It is better that you set its minimum state to 15%, so that your cpu wont be stressed all the time, i think. -

you cooler is one big hell of a cooler -
Yeah.. But I like the design of that cooler. Its so cool

Hi guys. I am new here. However I am not new to the tech world. I think I got my first computer when I was like 12.
Anyhow, I am about to purchase the 4820TG-5637 and was wondering if the i3-350M could be swapped for a i5 ULV or a i7 ULV. Would either i5 or i7 ultra low voltage processors be more efficent/cooler than the i3?
I am a little behind in the processor dept., but to my understanding the ULV processors are capable of full speed but run at a lower MHz than the regular i5/i7. Is that right or am I way off?
Is there specific models that will fit the Acer 4820 Motherboard?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Oh and I did try to do a search. The "Search this thread" button will not work. I do not know why, but it fails every time. -
So I got my TimelineX 4820TG-7805 from Amazon Today and not only does it have a 320GB hard drive it also doesn't have bluetooth. Other then the processor being the i5-460M I think everything else is the same. I was hoping it might have USB 3.0 or something but no luck.

I hate to add pain to injury, but I thought I would mention that I just bought the last AS4820TG-5637 from Microcenter for $699. This was the last unit in ALL the USA region. I hope I don't get a lemon.
The specs are:
Intel i3 350M
320gb Hard drive
ATI Radeon 5650
Bluetooth 3.0+HS
I guess it was a good deal considering the price+bluetooth that it has.
So does anyone have any insight on the processor swapping?
Update: So I just finished reading this entire thread. Still no info on processor compatibility. Anyone? Please? -
I think I would have been better off with the last 4820TG with the i5-450M, the 500GB hard drive, and bluetooth. Also, I think towards the end it was going for $699
But I am very happy that I have a Timeline 4820TG since this is the only one I could find.
Also, I noticed while making the recovery discs this laptop has the quitest DVD-ROM drive I have ever had in a laptop, and I have had a lot of laptops. -
I saw that newegg has the new crop of these in stock. I am about to purchase this one:
Newegg.com - Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-7805 NoteBook Intel Core i5 460M(2.53GHz) 14" 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 320GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 + Intel HD
I have one question first though. I plan on putting this thing in my backpack that is already full of heavy books. Is there any sort of sleeve with hard cover to help keep the 14" timelinex safe?
I decided to just go with a sleeve. Hopefully i can carry this thing in my backpack in such a way that it doesn't cause my any issues. I got the Caselogic one with the pouch so I can carry the charger if need be.
Also, I ordered the Momentus XT 500GB drive because they were offering it for $20 off and an enclosure for the stock hard drive. I am a bit nervous about switching the two drives since the OS is on the one that comes with the machine. Should I just make the back up disks and use those to install on the new hard drive? -
I recently bought an Acer 4820TG with the i5.
First thing was do format the hd with all the bloatware and a fresh install of windows 7 pro.
Then the drivers; i managed to find all drivers except one on acer's support pages. I can't find a driver for the device called "PCI Simple Communications Controller" in device manager. Anyone know which driver to use? -
where did you see it has optional 3g? what does optional anyway? I have exactly same model I believe if you have 4820TG Il Diavolo(?) -
The only one I see that Walmart sells is the AS4820T. That is the one with-out the ATI 5650 graphics card. If you have seen the 4820TG for sale at Walmart before, please tell me where. I would rather buy from Walmart for the easy return policy. However, I do not think that Walmart ever sold the 4820TG. Walmart goes for the cheapest of anything, so that means they would go for the non ATI laptop.
Anyone have any ideas on the processor swap. I might buy a i5 450m and sell the i3 350m.
Also, no one has discussed modifying the 4820 with another fan. Would it be possible? I have 2 Dremels and an 18v Ridgid just begging for attention. LoL -
Hey Guys, I would like to ask you if someone knows or maybe even has the iso (or at least a link) to the original Acer CD that comes in the package ????
I don't know what i did and lost the cdand now want to install some stuff from it and can't find it .... It would be very cool if you could help me with this ....
It is really necessary ...
Thank you all in advance
By the way i just love the Notebook
Please reply asap ! Thanx. -

Heads up. Amazon added the AS4820TG-7805 on Sunday for $799. Also just showed up on Newegg's site and they've already undercut Amazon by $50. This is one of the models with i5 460m & 1gb Radeon 5650.
Edit: Oops... missed the last few pages of this thread. Looks like this was already mentioned. -
Anyone knows how much this laptop can be upgraded with its default mobo ?
-
How to enable bluetooth.Do i need drivers.

Did notice that a german website Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820TG-5464G75Mnks (LX.PSE02.339) | The H Price Insight / EU has similar specified machines but not really wanting the hassle of new keyboards and potential warranty issues have not gone down this route for a 4820tg just yet. -

got one pinging away to me atm -
Does anyone know where I can get a good case for it? I just received the laptop and haven't even opened it but I'm curious what kind of cases are available for this specific laptop.
-
I'm in the same boat ... i would like a sleeve with a bit of sturdiness to then be placed in my backpack (which i havent got yet either).
Googling i will go... -
Is the bluetooth module located on the wi-fi card?
In other words, you would have to buy a wi-fi+bluetooth card to get internal bluetooth?
I keep hearing people talk about changing their lower spec wi-fi card for an Intel one. Is the wi-fi+bluetooth an Intel? -
-
Does the 4820TG support Dual band 5.0 GHZ wireless?
-
So was the i3 model I bought from Microcenter for $699 still a good deal?
It has the i3 350m, 320gb, 4gb ram, ATI 5650, and bluetooth 3.0
Still worth the $699 vs. the $749 i5 460m (no bluetooth) at Newegg? -
hi guys... i'm considering to get either the acer 4820tg or the lenovo y460... which 1 would you guys recommend?
the acer comes with i5 460m and the lenovo comes with i5 540m. any significant difference between the 2 proc?
other than tat the rest are almost the same except acer has 640gb hdd and lenovo has 500gb...
i just want to know how's the built quality and heat problems for the acer compared to lenovo... thanks guys... -
@ fire3element
Ur not gonna like this answer but sry bro the $749 trumps the $699. $50 more for the i5 460? No brainer. Add the fact that the thermal envelope for the i5s are nearly 20 degrees C higher.. The 749 is a steal and totally worth it.
Not to mention you were taxed from MC while newegg only taxes a handful of states. -
anyone know how the AS4820T-5570 model handles with SC-2?

My laptop gets here on Monday (yay!) and I am planning to replace the HDD with the Momentus XT. I am a bit concerned about transferring over Windows though. I know that Windows is backed up on the stock HDD so switching the two would remove my operating system. What is the easiest way to get Windows over to my new HDD from the old one?
Also, are there any big bottlenecks or lower quality parts that or worth replacing early on. I knew the HDD was weak and now I am reading a bit about a mediocre wireless card and sound card. Do people suggest replacing them as well?
By the way I am getting the new i5-460m with 5650 card. -

The QM's have a built in heat spreader that covers entire CPU and no video part, with center area developing the most heat. HS then contacts the entire heat spreader area to dissipate heat.
The HS in the 3820TG/4820TG does cover the entire chip, but the only parts that make contact are the tops of the CPU and Intel GPU with air around the rest. Two separate heating area's are under that one HS section, not centered like the QM would require.
Also, the QM is a 45w part, but no onboard Intel video to add, while the i7-640m is a 35w part, but also has the added heat from integrated Intel video (although I think the 35w includes that).
So wouldn't the stock cooling work with the QM? (perhaps poorly, but work?) Centered heat source and no GPU? You would lose the TimelineX long battery life obtained by the Intel GPU part, and end up with only a 3 hour battery usage, with in my opinion, only moderate performance gains.
As a person that stuffs Big Blocks into cars that most say would never work, and they do work, this QM has me thinking there has to be a way.
