I just flashed to 1.22 and still the same.

EDIT: I think I solved the problem by disabling the Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology service (IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe) and removing "iastoricon.exe" from autorun.

Hi, Robs, do you know if this second ribbon cable can be plugged directly in mainboard or requires some mod as AS3820T:

I want to do this on my AS4820 but, I don't think that place was a good source of power.

    David.

The power cable can not be connected directly to the motherboard. It was not planned to use a backlight keyboard on a 4820.

I'm using 8.15.10.2125 and it works fine. The driver package name from ATI's CCC is 8.741.1.6-101021a-107242C-Acer--the driver is the second newest from Acer's website I think. I know mine works because I calibrated my screen to get rid of the bluish tint. Did you calibrated yours on both ATI's CCC and Intel's? Whenever you switch graphic mode the color profile is also switched.

    thanks for your answer.

What can be the problem for you if i want to remove the optical bay et to place a slim HDD (9,5mm ) ? Do you think that the chipset can't operate with two HDD ? If the optical bay use SATA , i can put the slim HDD on a caddy like this one : Optical Bay Hard Drive Caddy(p/n OBHD9-SATA-SATA-B) Black, 9.5mm [OBHD9-SATA-SATA-B] - $42.00 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks ?

Can you give me the version of your bios which function with the 640M ?

Last question : i don't understand " but a ssd with cabbinet is possible!"

    Thanks :)

Hello. I recently purchased this laptop from ebay but it came with no adapter. Currently ive been using an Acer 5920 adapter which works fine however its wattage is low at 3.something whereas the required is 4.something so it does take quite long to charge. Anyway was wondering what is the correct model adapter ie is it Delta or Lite-on brand and where can i purchase one from? Thanks.

The optical drive is SATA, and I believe there are people who use an optical bay caddy to install a 2nd hard drive.

Got a few problems with freezing. Every now and then on games and on word the PC will freeze momentarily. It doesn't happen when I'm browsing and only freezes on some games but not all.

On games, I can get past this, but it's really irritating when I'm trying to type out an essay at 1am and I keep getting typo's because of it.

Download drivers from acer site, specifically the new catalyst drivers. So I think the drivers are up to date. Are there any drivers for the processor. Excuse my igorance.

It can be a good solution to have a good capacity and a good speed for a smal price .

Install a SDD of 80go or 120go (or less) for the system and some games et put the original HDD on a caddy in the place of the optical bay ...

    For less than 200€ ...
You have just to buy this one : Optical Bay Hard Drive Caddy(p/n OBHD9-SATA-SATA-B) Black, 9.5mm [OBHD9-SATA-SATA-B] - $42.00 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks and a SDD (9.5mm hight maximum) , and this product : SATA (slimSATA) to USB Cable , connect optical drive externally [slimSATA-USB-C07] - $29.95 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks to keep the optical drive .

But i think that the RAID isn't supported ...

Someone have already install a 640M or 580M on this laptop ? Do you have to update the bios version to the last one ?

8 go of PC3 10600 can boost my laptop or is it useless ?

Thank and sorry for my english :(

If you have a Western Digital hard drive then you should download quietHDD. It's mentioned in the Frequently Asked Questions section on the first post of this thread.

Each 4820TG laptop has a different brand hard drive (Hitachi, Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung, etc.). Western Digital hard drives are known to have freezing/stuttering problems in games and quietHDD solves this problem.

Just finished re-installing Win 7 on my 4820 as well as replacing my hard drive with an SSD. Thanks to Hendrickson and Bronsky for their great guides.

I have had the 4820 for about a month now and had been wanting to do this, but the holidays delayed it.

The procedure went very smoothly, although there are some minor differences between the guides and the 4820 since they were written for a 3820.

The backup app on the 4820 backs up both apps and drivers to the same disc. The activation key backup procedure worked fine with no issues.

After removing the expansion cover, you'll see that the hard drive is not covered by a cage as shown in Hendrickson's photos, but instead has a small amgle bracket which screws into the HD in two places. The drive replacement itself was as simple as unplugging the HD and plugging in the SSD (a Corsair Force series 120 GB drive). The drives just slide into place.

After following the directions in Bronsky's guide on placing a bootable Win 7 on a thumb drive, the re-installation ran like clockwork. I then proceeded to re-install every driver from the backup disc. I didn't touch any of the apps. The install manager conveniently identifies what is an app and what is a driver.

After this, it all seems to be working perfectly, including the switchable graphics. Since it is working I am in no hurry to update any of my drivers, but I am sure I'll get to that eventually.

Next up is replacing the ODD with the original HD setup as a data disc. I am just waiting on the adapter/caddy to show up.

LOL! Gotta love that SSD! The four little colored dots on boot-up now don't even finish coalescing into the Windows symbol before the system is ready to go. :D

Thanks again to all who posted guides!

I've lurked this thread for a while now, and you guys inspired me to buy my first laptop. The Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820TG-7566. I'm absolutely in-love with it. The graphics surpass my gaming rig, acting as a perfect desktop replacement, thats still perfectly portable (14')

Anyways, I want to wipe it clean and put a clean install of W7 64bit that I bought prior. Just want to know what acer drivers, switchable graphics drivers, etc. that I'll need. Wondering if you guys had some sort of list, or download page for everything I'll need to install when I put a new copy of 7 on.

    Thanks in advance, guys.

You can always backup the drivers from the hidden folder at C:\OEM\Preload\Autorun\DRV

It should have all the necessary drivers.

Why not just use the backup utility already included? It will create a backup for you on a disc complete with a GUI driven restore program. That is what I did when I did a clean W7 install. I simply restored from this disc and everything worked like a charm. No fuss, no muss.

There are still some 4820TG laptops "in stock" at several Micro Center locations in the U.S. You'll have to search by location on the Micro Center site.
    http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0350011

Other than that, it looks like all the other retailers are "out of stock".

Okay thank you! I think someone already said that acer is not doing a refresh on the timelineX line does that mean they will stop adding new components to the 4820tg or does that mean that they will create a "new and better" line to replace this? *sorry noob question.

Hey guys first post. I've been lurking here forever and used the reccommendation from this thread to buy the Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-3195 from newegg a few months back.

Thing is I never really used it I just had my Ipad instead. I'm selling the Ipad and the laptop so I can get the new Asus Tablet that they are selling.

Since the Acer laptops are in short supply I thought I'd give everyone a heads up that I have mine posted on ebay. I have it listed at $635 but I enabled offers, if you send an offer over for $585 via ebay and mention you saw it here I'll give it to you for that price.

    Thanks guys!

Hey Everyone, first post here! I've been following this thread for awhile and I've read through most of it, but I was wondering if there was a consensus on what the best AMD drivers are to update to without any issues. From what I could tell it seemed hit or miss, but I just wanted to make sure.

I just got the laptop this week from Amazon, yay! Ordered right after Christmas and no tax or shipping here in CA.

I'm thrilled about the performance and quality of this laptop. 14" is a perfect size for me, the screen I got is an AUO panel and works fine. No graininess or lines. There's a little flex in the keyboard but it's fine with my normal typing.

I've run through Prime 95, Intel Burn Test, and Furmark and the highest cpu temp was 89, the highest gpu temp was 66. So far I've only played EVE on it and that doesn't tax the thing at all. Still have to download some games from Steam to finish my testing, but I think I've got a pretty flawless unit. Thanks to everyone who has been giving advice here. It helped me to decide to buy this laptop and know what to look out for once I got it.

RMA is the short for replacement or repairing your laptop through Acer. The RMA is your tracking number for the process. Or with other words, use your waranty.

If you get an I/O error on the recovery process there could be more great problems which are not fixable by end user like you and me.

go into the ATI CC, make sure that under powerplay settings it's set to "maximum performance." Do the same thing for windows Power Options (under advanced settings).

You also want to make sure it is using the video card. Right click on the desktop and click adjust video performance. Make sure the "high performance" and not the power saving gpu are in use. It does not always switch, especially if you have other programs like explorer open.

Question: what are reasonable speeds for copying from DVD to the hard drive? My dvd drive seems defective and awful slow. I tested copying a 2.9 GB file to the HDD and it took ~10 min.

Also, which program should I use to make/burn a factory image? Acer eRecovery or Windows Backup/Restore? Or another method?

    Other problems:
    - IE running slow, freezing every few seconds
    - Mouse freezes up every 20-30 secs, I have to remove my finger from the pad and try again

    I am really regretting this.

As far as I know Warranty-Void stickers are on the bottom of the laptop covering a few screw holes and/or on the bottom preventing you from getting access to RAM and HDD. Also, I haven't seen anyone report warranty stickers on laptops bought in North America. It seems like they only put them in Europe and Asia, but I might be wrong.

To summarize: if you don't see any Warranty-Void stickers on the bottom of your laptop, then you are good to go! :D

You are not supposed to use your computer when you are burning recovery discs; you'll experience lag/freezing like you are mentioning. This is common sense. Also, it'll take you about 2-3 hours burning recovery discs. So, most people would just make the driver disc and skip the backing up process.

It seems like user error from my point of view.

Posting from my desktop. Of course I wouldn't use the laptop while burning recovery discs.

Can anyone provide feedback on mouse pointer freezing and expected dvd copy to HDD speeds?

I took my 4820 out of its case to figure out how to get at the ODD, which I plan on replacing with my hard drive (the HD was replaces with an SSD). I had to take every screw on the bottom of the case off, then remove the keyboard and remove some screws there. After that I could get the motherboard partially out. There are a couple wires (I believe the speakers were one) that prevented me from separating the board from the case completely. I also had a bit of trouble when there was a hang up on the screen hinge. However, I was not specifically looking to get at the CPU, so I didn't really notice what would be required there.

After going through all these contortions, I discovered I didn't have to do that just to get the ODD out. All you have to do there is just pop the keyboard, then remove one screw. Oh well, live and learn...
