That's a picture of what the upcoming 4830TG is supposed to look like. Might be a 4830TG, might be a mockup or photoshop.

I don't even care anymore. This laptop runs like a friggin dream.

After playing L4D2 for an hour the temps remained around low 60ish and that blew me away. Considering my old gateway went above 90 celsius after such a session. Not to mention the superior performance compared to that of my gateway.

The laptop is really well built. The screen and body of the keyboard can be flexed since the system is so thin, but you would have to grab awkwardly and do it on purpose without care to actually give it a hefty flex. Otherwise, I'm sold to this system, and the build quality is top notch.

One con I can point out is how absurdly glossy it is. Then again, every laptop now a days seem to follow such an unfortunate trend. If the next iteration of the TimelineX series fixes the two minor issues above, then that is probably going to be the best laptop ever.

    @pwcmed :
I'm currently considering buying a 4820TG if I can fit a 1600x900 screen in it.
I tried to contact some LCD Panels suppliers, but they need the actual model number of the 4820TG's panel to tell me if they got a compatible screen.

If you have a 4820TG and if you are ready to swap the screen, you can tell them what they need to know and get an answer!

Of course it would be good.
The poor sound quality is due to the low resistance and Power of the external speaker, the sound is still being rendered by a standard audio chip.
When you plug in the headphone the output goes directly to the headphone.

Hello, I am owner of 4820TG bought in July 2010. So far I was very satisfied with it but now I have a problem with performance. Recently, I noticed that some of my games don't run as they did and overall performance is worse than it was so I decided to run 3DMark06 again. When I ran it on almost clean computer the score was > 7000 (don't remember exact value) but now I get only 5682.
Do you have any advice how should I investigate which component makes my notebook slower ? Any benchmarking SW, what would help me to compare my device with same device ?
I have a feeling that the problem is in graphic card but I'm not sure. Could it be in new graphic drivers that I installed recently ? Should I reinstall to old ones ?

    My 4820TG:

    Intel M430 @ 2.27Ghz
    Ati Radeon HD5650 550/800
    GPU drivers: 8.821 Catalyst 11.2

    3DMark 06 result: http://3dmark.com/3dm06/15460458?sh...6/15460458?key=Tf3yWPsdA9Z4tD75hSnNf0f98s6JcH

*edit I ran the test again after couple of restarts and using CCCleaner and my 3DMark CPU score improved almost twice (don't really know how that happened) ! And overall 3DMark score is now 6752, but I think it should be better.

Check the date on your drive firm ware. Make sure it's up to date. Then make sure you have intel rapid storage technology application running.

See if you have powersaver on in Catalyst and, if using ePower, make sure that all of your settings call for power vs efficiency when plugged in.

    Hi All,

I just found out that the upper corner of the lid where "Signal Up" word are written is magnetic. Any idea why it is magnetic? Are yours similar? Nothing that I am worried about, but it is interesting to know.

I'd try shutting down all background apps and run the bench again. And remember to run it without powersaving features as Bronsky said. If that doesn't work, try a defrag. As that probably won't work, I'd try rolling back to the Acer certified drivers.

Mine is similar, but I don't know why.

Well, since he didn't state that he'd installed an SSD and since he doesn't seem to know the common reasons why a benchmark score goes down, I just assumed he hadn't put one in.

i have this problem as well. i suspect that it might have something to do with using an external monitor as well.

i've tried closing everything so i can switch back to the onboard from ATI but it still does not work. The only thing that worked was rebooting/logging out. is there a better way to do this?

Apparently it's just Acer's tech for improved wireless. I believe they started including the tech a couple years ago and still continue the branding. Overall, it just improves the reception of wireless signals with small adapters inside the monitor area. Think of it as lift up your laptop screen to raise the antenna for a radio/cell phone. More info on the Canadian Acer website: Acer Features, Learn about Acer CrystalBrite, GridVista, SignalUp, Nplify and GraviSense from Shopacer.co.uk

    ----

Anyways, I just picked up my 4820TG at Microcenter yesterday, and I just have to say I absolutely LOVE this device. The lightweight and portability added with both integrated and dedicated graphics still blows my mind as I type this. At one point, I saw that my battery life was 6+ hours on integrated graphics. This is such a big shock to me as I'm coming from a 15min-charged Dell Inspiron 1501 -> 2hr-charged Sager NP8660.

After doing initial setup/boot on factory defaults, I did decide to go with the clean install. As a note to those looking at doing this, the only driver that gave me issues when installing was the Atheros WLAN. Acer's support website listed what seems to be an out-dated driver that just wouldn't load correctly on my 6847 version. After a couple hours of "realizing" this, I finally found the updated 9.0.0.x driver versions, which installed fantastically. (Can't find the link atm, will update with them when I get home)

Other than that, I am a very happy with my purchase, and I'm glad Microcenter carries the lesser known laptop models, like the 4820TG/3820T, that are so hard to find in the US without purchasing online.

P.S. - Bronsky, I just watched your 3820TG Unboxing Video. Gotta admit, that was pretty epic, given your anticipation and excitement for the device! +2points

This site popped up a few weeks back regarding the announcement of the 3830/4830/5830 series. The guy posting on it just uploaded some pictures of the 4830. Looks like it's quite a bit thicker....also you can see the blue USB 3.0 port on it. No nVidia sticker on it like on the other post....so I guess what GPU will be available isn't completely clear yet.

I am currently the proud owner of an Acer 4820TG.

I am wondering if anyone has encountered any problems when carrying the laptop around. This was what happened a month ago. I carried the laptop in my Samsonite laptop backpack and used the fastener to secure the laptop.

I basically took the train from my place to my office. When i settled down and tried to turn on my lappie in the office, i encountered problems. The hard disk seemed to have crashed. It took me a loooong time to repair and troubleshoot to get it back up.

    Anyone else encountered this?

Hey everybody, I purchased a 4820tg with the standard ati5650. For this card on every review I see that the windows experience index seems to be 6.7. However mine shows only 5.9 for both graphics for the 5650. Anybody know why this might be the case?

No I haven't and mine spends a LOT of time travelling each day. Was it in suspend? It might be a poorly seated memory module. Jostling around a suspended machine with a loose memory module would most certainly make it crash. If the hard drive crashed it would usually not be able to boot. Were the any bad sectors on it?

Is the processor swap as simple as remove old one and put in new one? Do I need to change bios or install anything for the new processor to run? I'm planning on replacing my I3-350m with the new I5-480m processor.

The windows experience index is based off of all of your components together; your graphics card, your cpu, hard drive, RAM, etc. are all included in the analysis. Your Windows Experience Index score will be based off of your lowest component score, not an average of all of them.

I have the 4820TG with the 6550ATI gpu and I also have a 5.9. For me, the bottleneck is the RAM. I'm guessing that that's the bottleneck for you too.

Thanks for the replys. Yes I know how windows experience index works, what I was trying to explain was not the lowest score but the desktop and gaming graphics indexes for 5650 were both 5.9s. I've already tried switching to ati mode and re-run the assessment but they're still 5.9. I was just curious why it was so while all the reviews suggest that 5650 receives 6.7 for graphics. Thanks.

Guys, let me ask you this. I am planing to do a fresh install of windows 7 on the AS4820TG-6847. I am debating between installing the 32-bit or the 64-bit version. I have some friends recommending me the 32-bit will run faster. At the same time the 32-bit will not see all 4 GB of RAM..

    What is the consensus?

32 bit version will not run faster- 32bit apps will be equally fast on both versions while 64bit apps usually excel on 64bit OS compared to their 32 bit versions.
There's no reason to buy legacy and that's what 32 bit version is becoming- a legacy version.

The thing is 32bit apps work as fast on 32bit system as on 64 bit system.
It's not really an emulator- just one system can do more than the other.

Hey quick question for the 640gb that came with the laptop. It has three partitioned. It has acer recovery, the os partition 100mb (don't know for what) and then the rest is the main harddrive. Can i make an exact copy of all three partitions on a 250gb hdd as a backup? I already made backup discs for the acer b4 doing anything. Was gonna use the 640gb in the optical bay drive once i get the item to put my movies/more games.

Yes, you can. Software like Clonezilla, make an exact copy of a drive (google for instructions). You can also make images of the drive using Norton Ghost, etc. About the partitions, the acer recovery is the factory recovery partition (allowing you to reset your laptop to factory conditions without using a disk), the 100 MB OS partition is reserved for Win 7 to store all the things it needs to store (settings, etc.), and the last is yours.

Hey guys, haven't posted in a while.
After 3 months or so? ... Still loving this laptop.... One small problem.
    My dog ate my charger

She also got my eeepc's charger a few months back... Ugh I was so mad.
But I took this opportunity to see if there were any smaller chargers, since I often carry my charger with me and it wasn't tiny (not the biggest I have ever seen though).

This looks oddly small but seems like it will work so I ordered it and I have amazon prime so it should be here on Monday (hopefully in time for school... because I need my laptop for school hence the rush and less research then normal).

If this works and is as small as it appears then the only thing my dog did was eat $60.... (which still makes me pissed) but at least I got a usability upgrade out of it.
I also might be the first one to leave a review for it.

If it sucks I will make sure to let you guys know and hopefully amazon will refund me or something, they have always been very good to me with that sort of thing.

So yea, if anyone has had any experience with replacement chargers or with this charger possibly let me know.
