Is it possible to disable automatic graphic switching with an option to manually switch? (=switching to discrete in bios is not a solution)

Thinking about pulling the trigger and ordering this 4820 to replace my slowly dying 4.5 year old laptop. I've seen that the revised Sandy Bridge versions are coming out pretty soon, is there an expected timeline/price for the 4830? Would it be worth the wait for the revised version?

OOO it might be worth the wait if it's less then 2 months. But if it is too long you won't be missing much I think with the current specs.

Question for those who have redone thermal paste:

Were there any thermal pads on the GPU? Or were both parts covered with thermal paste?

About to open my TimelineX and redo the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU, but I'm unsure whether I'll need a copper sheet + thermal paste to replace any thermal pads.

The chipset had a thermal pad, I removed it and bent the tabs up to make up the space that was left from the pad.

Hey guys! I hope you can help me make my final decision with regards to buying a laptop, and the Acer 4820TG is one of my considerations. I made a post here which I hope you could visit :D What notebook should I buy? Choosing between asus u33jc, u36jc, acer 4820, u41jf

I wanted to read your entire forum, but it's just too long! :p Especially after finishing reading 3 other owner's threads...

    TIA!

(I'm making this post in the different owner's threads; I hope that's ok...)

Thanks for the info. I just did the thermal paste for the TimelineX. There was a thermal pad on the GPU. I removed it and just replaced it with thermal paste. AC-MX2 is awesome. Over 10 degrees drop in temps.

I also want to apply some thermal paste. I'm not sure which to buy.
    I'm considering AS5, MX2/3/4, IC7, or a Shin-Etsu compound.

Can you also talk about the procedure a bit?
How did you get at the the motherboard?

I'm sure the CPU portion is relatively straight forward but how about the GPU?

    Hey guys quick question.

I Overclocked the GPU with the AMD tool to 750/950 and Team Fortress 2 would run fine but later on, would freeze for about 10 seconds followed up by a either a gray, white, or black screen and return to normal. The freezing would shortly come again repeating the steps above. The temps would show that it has barely gotten above 62 and I thought that's stable temperatures considering I got constant 60 C with stock.

Is there something wrong with my laptop or am I doing this OCing thing wrong?

I used Artic Cooling MX-2 because it's non conductive. I think it's up to MX-4.

Look at the first page for the service manual. It will show you how to take it apart.

All the ones i mentioned are non-conductive. Some say mx-4 is inferior to mx3/2.

I checked the service manual but see nothing about the GPU.

Good temps =/= stable OC. It's probably not stable at those clocks. Are you sure you're looking at the GPU temps, 'cause 60C seems awfully low?

I use IC diamond. Earlier in these threads I documented my 3820TG's 10C lower temps using it. My I5-540m had idle temps under 29C.

The fan/sink housing for the GPU is on the same side as the CPU. Once you have the motherboard turned over to get access to the CPU, you have equal access to the GPU.

Somebody on this thread tested various different clock speeds for their stability. He concluded that 700 clock/ 1000 memory was stable.
BTW, without OCing your GPU, you should be able to run TF2 perfectly fine on very high settings. I averaged out to 50 FPS with occasional drops to 30 when there was a number of explosions happening.

New here myself...centering on the AS4820.. I notice there are 3 versions. The 6847 would seem to be the one to get. The i5 processor is a little faster version, as well the hard drive has the most capacity compared with the other two.
Hard drives are relatively cheap these days, it seems an easy upgrade to a 7200 rpm drive would be feasible.

Yeah, make sure it's a 4820TG not a 4820T. As only the TG has a GPU for gaming performance etc.

I'm wondering about this myself. I have the 3820tg with the HD 6550. Just from 3Dmark06, it seems that overclocking the memory has more of an effect.

My stock 3Dmark06: 7700-7800 like everyone else..

    700 mhz core/800 mhz mem: ~8100

    650 mhz core/1000 mhz mem: ~8800

I realize that 3Dmark06 is a directx9 bench, and therefore, the increased core speed may have more of an impact on directx 10/11, but I was surprised to see just how memory limited 3Dmark06 scores seem to be.

Is this a trend that everyone else is seeing?

If so, is there a consensus about what safe clocks for the memory are? 1000 mhz?

I wonder if you could drop a HD 6750/6770 into one of these things (20% more shaders and GDDR5 instead of GDDR3) as they seem to have a similar thermal envelope (though couldn't find wattage ratings for either)... And if you could, how would you even go about finding one retail...

(The HD 6750/6770 are GDDR5 versions of the HD 6650 that Acer is speculated to be including in their next X830TG lineup - I suppose they don't think it cost effective to spring for the GDDR5 version - for that the only place I know of where you can find one is a $2000+ mac book pro..)

It is .. there are 3 TG variations One is a M480 processor, and 640 GB hdd. Others have either 500 or 320GB hdd and the i5 is M460. All have the 1GB Radeon GPU.

Hey guys. The size of this charger impresses me but one thing worries me. I hear a faint buzzing sound coming from the charger.

At first I feared it may be underpowered for this laptop, but after looking at my chewed up first charger I see that the wattage and specs all seem to be the same.

Here is the pics of the specs on the back of both:
    http://i56.tinypic.com/2v2eg4g.jpg
    http://i55.tinypic.com/2eghd8n.jpg

Think I should be worried? It seems to be charging fine but I am scared to load up crysis or something and start using up power like a . But I see no reason to worry besides the faint buzzing noise.

if SP1 is not showing up then most likely the culprit is the video drivers. if you go and check the version of your intel drivers, you will find that this is the issue since a required update before installing sp1 cannot install because of the version of intel drivers that the acer driver package currently has.

I don't know if anyone cares... but I just played the demo for Dragon Age 2 with the charger plugged in and it seemed fine. Every couple minutes I touched it to see how hot it was and listened for the buzz. It seems to have grown softer and is now hard to hear unless I hold it to my face (it better not explode).

I consider that a good test but I will continue to use it and monitor it. I hope it works good because it is very small and easily portable... well worth the money if it works like the old charger.

Also Dragon age 2 is terrible... don't buy it. The demo convinced me... camera controls SUCK.

Just wondering (and I'm sure this has been answered before), how accessible are all the components like RAM and hard drive? I definitely have some things to replace and don't want to have to tear the damn thing apart to do it

So I finally got my 4820TG and I finished installing World of Warcraft.

When the game loads up, my fps wont go above 30, I thought this laptop was supposed to be able to handle WoW flawlessly.

    Any suggestions?

Is this happening to anyone else? My HD6550 won't overclock for some reason. I've had this laptop for about 3 weeks and for the first 2 weeks, it OCed and everything was fine. now, AfterBurner won't do anything. I enabled unofficial OCing and what not, and nothing. It says that "700/1000" clock speeds have been applied but I still see the AfterBurner monitoring the GPU at 600/800.

    Anyone know anything about this?

My friend gets around 40-60 FPS (depending if it's in city or out of the city) with high settings in WoW on the HD 5650. You'll need to check your graphic settings or drivers.

Not bad on high, I was running around on ultra to see what it would look like, guess the 4820tg can't handle that much in the city.

Drivers are up to date, just need to settle for less with the graphic settings.

Edit: Nevermind, the game still feels choppy and doesn't respond very well even on Fair settings. Still trying to figure out a way to make it more bearable.

Yeah, while Acer can drop in a new chip, it's unlikely you or I could (well, if they're pin compatible I might be able to track down the wave soldering / desoldering equipment needed in a pinch, but still...) Plus GDDR5 memory runs much hotter than GDDR3, and switching notebooks tend to get bus bound at a certain point, so that a super fast GPU is just spinning its wheels waiting to transfer data across a slower narrower bus than you'd use if you built the machine with just one GPU not two.

My friend told me that having shadows on the lowest in WoW had a massive change in FPS. Try messing around with the settings and lower some details.
