Thanks, I'll see what happens, though now I'm scared to try it. Do you know the best thermal pad that I could use?
-
I'm not from the USA.
The two companies I'm using seems only sell their products in germany with their names on it. KeraFol and Quick-Cool.
You have to look for the right thicknes and value before W/mK should be as great as possible. Something between 5 and 8 is good.
The best way is to ask the local dealer where you buy our other things. Or buy one from the Acer Support (if it possible). -
You bring up a good point. You have to make sure you've got the right thickness. If you put in a shim that doesn't fill up the area it WILL eventually swim loose. I suggest cutting the shim material long and thin, the right width, put the heatsink on and see if you can easily pull it out. If you can it's too thin. Start small and work up. The only better and affordable material than copper for thermal conductivity is silver, but it's not as malleable, and the malleability of copper is what helps it stay in place.
If the junction is under the right pressure, the shim won't swim out of the junction later on.
And thermal pads work too, I'm sure someone sells them on the internet somewhere for cheap if you know what thickness you need. Part number in the manual is Eapus XR-PE. Can you order them from Acer? -
Aren't thermal pads more liberal thickness wise?
-
Is there a link to the service manual?
I had to call with the Acer support to get the information, if I can order a pad directly.
Yes, but you should take one, which will fit nearly.
They are listed on a shop near to me from 0.12mm up to 3mm thickness. Both of the extrems will not be interchangeable.

Speaking of cooling, is everyone aware of this?
Acer Aspire 5570 laptop cooling mod ... I've bought my Acer Aspire 5570 with T2450 Core Duo 2.0 CPU and Intel GMA950 Video 1.5 years ago and back then I wasn't ... -
I just got some of the diamond thermal paste today, and was planning putting in the on the GPU and CPU. But after reading some posts about people having problems after taking the GPU thermal pad, and needed a cooper shim that could potentially slip out of place, I think I'm just going to replace the CPU thermal paste.
-
Good idea
-
You may end up having to replace the GPU thermal pad. When you remove the heatsink, it damages the thermal pad's contact between the GPU and heatsink. A damaged thermal pad will not work well.
-
Yes, I got the temps to 4 degrees celsius below the stock temps. Another member of this forum had done this and he seems pretty happy about his result.
-
I still don't why people are talking about shims and thermal pads. The screws that hold the heat sink can be bent slightly up to make good contact to the CPU and GPU. Here are my results.
My temps -
What did you bend them with?
What about GPU temps running future mark? The GPU is the only die that has the gap problem, not the CPU.
Where can I find the blacklit 4820t/tg keyboard, and is the blacklight controllable via software or button?
Done what, what are you talking about? Removing the plastic flap covering the bottom vent?
I'm also curious about this, I would like to do it too to reduce the temps even more to be insanely cool.
Wonder if it can be done without replacing the plastic with mesh, and just taking off the plastic. -
What a PITA to get to that damn CPU die! Successfully applied the new thermal paste on the CPU, and I ended up with only one extra screw! Idle CPU temps dropped about 10 degrees C, heavy load temps dropped about 5 degrees C. GPU temps stayed around the same, maybe got a degree or two worse due to removing the thermal pad and putting it back on. I forgot to plug that damn SD card reader back into the mainboard, but that will have to wait another day...
Edit: GPU and CPU load temps are hitting 88 degrees C (GPU overclocked)
So where can I buy a new thermal pad for the GPU? -
lol I know what you mean, got left with a couple extra screws and actually damage a power connector but everything seems to be working. Going to open it up again next Tuesday when I'm off and try: removing the plastic sheet covering the vent underneath the fan, bending the screw part of the heatsink over the GPU, and trying out a StarTech thermal pad purchased from Amazon, which happened to get bad reviews, but I'm guessing they didn't combine it with AS5 Thermal grease like I will do. Hopefully I can achieve 80c maximum temps while playing Crysis 2 MP demo on hardcore graphical settings, that will be a dream. I reach 99c as of now after removing the thermal pad and putting AS5 alone..before opening the laptop and doing this it had been in the low 90s celsius, 92 max.
edit: doesn't look like the "cooling mod" is possible on the 4820tg, based on the pics from this Disassembly
On the GPU screw part of the heat spreader, it looks delicate, how did you go about bending it, it's hard to tell what's causing the gap. -
Hello everybody,
I have the next problem posted several times on the thread. My screen freezes from a month now and not on games (I tried Borderlands and no problem at all) but in explorer or other applications and the only think I can do is to reboot. I know , I know I read the first post and pages 206, 207 and others and still don't know what to do. Should I install QuietHDD or I have to update the video drivers???? Please help.....
I didn't touch the original configuration and still have CCC Ver. 2010.0825.2205.37769, Direct 3 Ver. 8.14.10.0761 and Driver Pack. Ver. 8.7411.5.(don't know which ver. of CCC is that - Maybe ACER). I saw that on the AMD site the last version for CCC is 11.2??? What should I do and how without loosing some options of the original Acer driver? QuietHDD or Update ATI????
Thanks in advance -
Only problem is the 4820 does not have covered holes (that I can tell) but does not have enough holes to begin with. Seems Acer (and likely others) like to keep things toasty inside.
-
Sounds like your GPU is crashing. Does this happen on the IGP as well as the ATI GPU?
-
Didn't notice that but I think it's the ATI...
-
You don't have any pictures of your modification?
-
Sxooter Please Help...From the moment I bought this laptop you helped me for everything...It's a VERY VERY boaring and unplesant problem and I'm scared to do whatever before I have the right instructions... Thanks a lot
-
Thank you for posting this.
I've been able to boot up with only the Intel GMA HD and turn off automatic switchable graphics. Also, the program is still in development. Contact inteks if you find any bugs.
Inteks has given me permission to add 3820TGTray as a solution for Intel Graphics in the FAQ section on the first post of this thread. -
Question for those of you who removed the GPU thermal pad: After you removed the pad, did you notice if the surface on the heat sink (which the thermal pad connected to) is completely flat? Also, any idea about the dimensions of the stock thermal pad?
-
btw, i had to disable the acer ePower management service (uninstall may work t0o
) because it was changing the gpu by itself, even with the 3820tgtray
-
I got everything installed and it works great. If you want to do this you need to make sure you get a 9.5mm height caddy. The one I got had a flat black bezel so I didn't even switch it with the angled one from the dvd drive and it looks fine. Everything works great. One thing I ran into was that quietHDD was not working correctly and I still had drive clicking from the heads parking every 2 secs. I am actually using HDDscan and running a command line from startup. This is working to stop the constant head parking and has eliminated the constant "click" sound.
-
thats great still waiting on mine
. its taking forever but still happy with my ssd. and for the person who bent the heatsink to fit on the gpu without the thermal pad. It does seem like it works for you, but I have a question about your temps are you just running prime? I think bending a heatsink will mess with the cooling on other parts not just the die but the memmory chips but idk I havent opened mine up I think it would be better to use copper shim to have direct contact with everything.
-
Does anyone know if we can put in the intel core i5-560m processor into our 4820tg? It uses the same socket as our current processors.
-
yes [ 10 chars ]
-
ePower was one of the first programs I disabled. It was turning off my wireless card on batteries. Power management in W7 is sufficient. No need for this glitchy program.
Bronsky
-
Hmm... so will uninstalling "Acer PowerSmart Manager" quite changing power plans on battery, and keep the gfx from auto-switching?
-
Hi guys,
I'm going to buy a new timeline-x notebook but I'm still thinking about which is better for me: the 3820tg or the 4820tg.
In Italy we have both models equipped with the 5470/512MB and i5/430m so that I have only to chose between the lighter weight of the 13.3 and the wider screen of the 14.
It's hard to do.
Any suggestion?
The ODD is not important to me but I would like to know if the 400g of the extra-weight could be a problem in a mobility scenario because the wider screen could be very useful to me.
The 14 I've found is also equipped with a 9 cells battery but I don't know how it looks.
There's anybody knows where I can find some photos/pictures of the 14 with the extra battery on?
Another question: AFAIK the overheating and throttling issues of the 14 are totally overcame with the i5 proc; it's true?
Thx you for your time
-
Yes the surface is flat..
Heres a picture of what it looks like.
The pinkish grey material that you see is the thermal pad.
-
Any idea of the dimensions? It looks like a 2cm x 2cm copper shim should work... As for the thickness, I think I might just buy 4-5 plates with different thicknesses and see which one fits the best.
-
-
I used a 1.4cm x 1.5cm copper shim for mine. As for the thickness, perhaps 0.09cm thick ?
-
Have you seen improvements in GPU temps with the copper shim?

Does anyone have problems watching 1080p on youtube with the intel graphics card? Everytime I switch to 1080p, the video freezes. It has sound but the video doesnt change. it works fine with 720p but not 1080p. But it 1080p works fine with the ati graphics card. Anyone know whats wrong? I was able to play 1080p before but now it just cant.
-
Guys please help me, my whole trackpad is not registering anything. There is no movement. In the control panel it says the device is enabled and working properly. I accidently placed my WD passport HDD on some part of my track pad and fell asleep. Now it is not working even after shutdown and restarting. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
-
try pressing Fn+F7
-
Thanks man, I didn't know before what that button is for and possibly when I tried to mute the volume pressed the wrong button. Thanks a lot for the help, it solved my problem. -
Hmmm. I've never played 1080p under windows, and on youtube you'd HAVE to have hardware acceleration turned on to make it work, because flash has a high overhead for doing it in software.
Not sure how to turn hardware acceleration on under Windows, it just works in Ubuntu 10.10 with the Radeon. I don't even bother with the Intel anymore in linux as I'm always plugged in and working when I'm using it.
Happened to me once, man I freaked out for about 5 minutes until I thought of that. Thought I was gonna have to send the thing back. -
Now that I've seen this picture I can TOTALLY understand what a previous poster meant about bending the tabs that hold the screws up a little so the heat sink just sits on the chip. As long as lowering the heat sink 0.5mm or so doesn't cause any problems with things touching that shouldn't I think that's the way to go. I might be putting AS5 on my machine this weekend to see if I can drop the temps. If I do I'll try bending the tabs ever so little to see if that works.
-
i am making acooler for my 4820tg 6847
where should i put the fan?
lower left hand side of the laptop or the uper portion next to the exit fan?
any of you guys got a good fan for this laptop that is cheap??
-
I bought the cooler master u2 and I placed the fans right underneath the vents. It helps lower the temps by about 5-6C. I suggest getting that cooler since you can place the fans where ever you like. I got it for around $4 after rebate at frys. Anyone know if the webcam can be swapped to a much better one? Also for running dual hard drives, do we need a hard drive caddy?
-
About a few degrees drop (49-47) on idle depending on ambient temp. Before I removed the stock pad, it will never ever get below 50+ degrees despite ambient temp. Most of the time it maintains around 50 degrees with my copper and some arctic silver 5. My copper shim is thinner than 1mm that may explain why I can't get better temps. However, with my Fan blowing towards my laptop the gpu can get as low as 48-46 degrees on idle
. With a thicker copper piece to conduct more heat and applied thermal compound to both sides, it should get lower temps.
Do you play games ? Any improvements in the temps on load ? And what was your initial temps before getting this cooler ? -
Yea I tested it with starcraft 2 single player and alienswarm which had been giving the I3 owners throttling issues. For Starcraft 2 in single player: w/out cooler temps were 79, 81, gpu= 84. W/cooler 76, 77, gpu = 82. For Alienswarm: W/out cooler temps were 85, 84, gpu = 88. W/cooler 79, 81, gpu = 83. These are wit the settings on high/ultra. So its about 4-5C lower w/cooler

Concerning my problem with freezing i noticed that it occur when the screen stays idle. I installed quietHDD and disabled first APM control and after AAM control because there was no effect. The problem is still here. What can I do? Any ideas?? And I put quietHDD in the startup but it doesn't start with windows - I have to activate it manually .... Please help. My screen freezes often and I must reboot each time. Thanks
-
My friend had a similar problem with his desktop computer, it would randomly freeze and the only way to fix it was with a reboot. It turned out that his hard drive was bad. Try using a hard drive health utility software to test for bad sectors and whatnot.
-
first figure out if it only happens on one or the other GPU. If it never happens when using the intel GPU then I'd suspect you've got a fault with the ATI GPU. When this happens do you get any messages in windows event log about crashed processes or anything?
-
Hey for the people who changed the thermal pad with a copper shim what do you think of this dimension? 15mm x 15mm x 1mm (1.5cm x 1.5cm x .1cm) or should i get one with 15mm x 15mm x .8mm (1.5cm x 1.5cm x .08cm)?
-
I just ordered up three different sizes of copper shims 15 x 15 x 0.8mm, 15 x 15 x 1.0mm, 15 x 15 x 1.2mm. When they get there I'm going to try them out and I'll let you guys know which thickness fits the best.
