Noone opened his 4820 to know the clock generator ? :S

 

Hi guys,as a new owner of the acer timelinex 4820tg i have some questions and pics with the toy".First my acer works well and i like most his body and finish.the hdd is too slow for the cpu performance i have an hitachi 500gb/5400rpm hdd by default took about 1 min(didnt count) to load the win 7 64 and my start up programs.Most of the games work on high details levels(tdu2, mafia 2, nfs uleashed ,gta)all on high settings.now questins:

1.For ex. on mafia 2 the max temps are cpu:84'c and 88'c, gpu 78'c without the cooler stand.With te cooler(cooler master U2 2 fans alloy body) only drops with a few grades cpu 81'c and 86'c and gpu 75'c .( the indoor temp is 24/25'c) .on normal use browsing, music office is 39/42 "c same indoor temp.
are this temps ok? my concern is about the cpu temps..*never get higher then this level.

2.the battery is "Simplo" manufactered 6000mah last about 6 h normal use brightnest level2.Never get hot even when i play mafia2 ex.,The q is :when it get discharged about 10% of its capacity on cpuid program shows that it has a wear level of 12%,after charge 100% it has only 7%.is that normal?i charge and discharge it to 5% in 5days usually then recharge it to 100%.How to minimize the wear level of the battery? How to you charge yours 4820tg on or off, how many hours?

Your temps are actually decent for a factory thermal paste job. At 84C on the CPU, you are still 20C under the max temp. My original 3820TG ran in the low 90's from the factory under stress. The GPU temp is fine too.

Hey guys,

I've had no issues with the built in mic until just recently.
I used it for ventrilo and now it doesn't seem to want to work. Works fine for Skype, but not for vent, anyone have any thoughts on what I should try?

 

never heard of ventrilo before, but if it works fine for skype, it will be related to the audio settings for that application.

they got a chat support, as I've seen on their website so if playing with the settings wouldn't help, ask their support for suggestions.

 

yea has to do with settings if it works in skype. check your ouput settings test it urself with the test button, etc if you can hear urself ur friends are trolling you .

 

alright so I got my unit back today. The rep was corrected. The tech replaced the motherboard. So I'm thinking the ATI graphic must of died, but why don't they desolder and solder a new ati chip in instead of replacing mb? maybe it costs less doing that?. Anyway, I got screen, hd and mb replaced. Not sure if I would want to buy another acer. I'm also going to disassemble my unit and put in new thermal paste, diamond 7. Temp was jump around 47 to 51 with ATI graphic enabled around 10 minutes. I think the 4820tg is a little bit hot, and the system is suffering with only one fan. If only I can install another fan into this system.

 

The time and the equipment to control the solder process of the ATI is to expensive to have it at all repair stations worldwide.

It is cheaper for Acer to order a few thousands motherboards more and have them in stock for replacement.

The replacement can be done by a unteached cheap person ($/h), the solder process not.

Only the money is important.

 

That is what i thought. I TOTALLY understand how mb replacement can " be done by a unteached cheap person". You guys are not going to believe this. The " Senior" technician forgot to connect one of the cables to my mb. It is the speaker cable, funny how it is still work without being connected to the mb. Maybe it is for something else. I found out after I disassembled my laptop for new thermal paste.

 

that's why I was afraid to send it in for repair after I experienced the sound issues, which are now luckily resolved.

I'd be worried that they'll do more damage to it than it was sent in with and that's not even talking about marks and scratches to my absolutely spotless unit.

seriously. I'm a tech too. So i understand that can happen. But I always careful and double check my work.

Bronsky and others how high is the wear level of the battery on yours laptops.mesure it with cpuid hardware monitor or aida64 pls.


How can i do a calibration on the battery?i usually discarge to 5% then recharge to 100%, its ok.

No Battery calibration possibly. It is all inside the the hardware on the TimelineX line.

The 4820T(G) has only one fan, the second is a mod.
A few persons hearing the hdd.

 

It looks like an underclocked QS I7. It will fit the PGA 988 socket. There is a download to check compatability. But, my guess is that it will work. The bios compatability would be my only concern. Thats why I prefer OEM CPUs. I would at least ask the vendor.

I'm planning to reformat my 4820tg so I have created a
partition to store my backups. My question is, if I reformat my
laptop, will it erase also the partition? I'm not familiar in
reformatting laptops that uses recovery cd's. Thanks!

 

There is a link in the ad. If you look at the questions under the ad, the seller says it is 100% compatable with the 4820TG. When in doubt ... read the ad.

@bebifies - If you are unfamiliar with partitioning your drive, you can easily destroy the recovery partition. You can make a restore disk and a backup of your system using Acer eRecovery. There are ways to make a copy of the partition in case you screw it up.

hello i don't know if this is a problem but i ask anyway. I think my usb peripherals take time to remove. The safe remove menu takes about 20 secs to appear after i click on safe remove. Am i just too paranoid? I saw the same process on other pcs being almost instantaneous

 

If you use eRecovery, you should have 4 DVDs at the end. One should be the recovery disk and 3 for the system information.

Hi,

Having a problem with my Aspire 4820TG.

I bought it in late February of this year so it's not very old. I used it for a couple of weeks and loved it but then my Mum needed a laptop so I gave it to her to use. She was fine with it for a while then started having problems - running slowly constantly BSODing. I went over there eventually and did a Startup repair which seemed to fix the issue but then a week later she was telling me the problem was back. I ended up doing an e-Recovery on it - ALT F10 and it seemed fine again - I took it back this time and gave her an iPad 2 instead which is much better for her but I digress. Anyway I've been using it on my desk here for a week or so - installing Steam games, using it a little but not much. Today I turn it on after maybe a week of not using it and it's come out of sleep and been SLOW SLOW SLOW. I waited half an hour for Steam to load and turned it off manually. Now it's BSODing with an error relating to DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL iastor.sys ...‎

I've just done a system repair but it seems to me I'm going to have a similar issue as before when my Mum was using it.

Anyone had this issue with it? If anything this laptop is underused. At this stage for me since the e-Recovery I have ONLY installed Steam and some games and a couple of benchmarks, Vantage and 3DMark 05 etc...

Any advise would be really appreciated.

Is this a software issue I can fix or a hardware issue I need to get warranty on?

Sounds like a machine that's overheating severely to me. Got any software to monitor CPU/GPU temps?

 

I have found this by googling:

"Ran chkdsk again with /r parameter, found and fixed issues. Ran Bootrec.exe /fixmbr from recovery console command prompt. Was able to log into Windows 7 Safe Mode with networking, update and ran ccleaner and malwarebytes. So far so good. Longest we've been in the OS in days."

this is a SW issue most likely, the problem is the Intel storage manager driver.

and just to add, I always prefer clean windows installs to system repairs and restores.

 

Yeh I can install them and have a look. Anything's possible. It's just sitting on a desk with nothing around it so there is nothing obstructing or that would cause overheating other than failed hardware.

Yes a fresh install would be nice and I do have a spare Windows 7 CD Key in my technet account but it's a new laptop from Acer and I want to enjoy the time saving aspects of their install...well I would LIKE to enjoy it.

If you haven't ruled out failed hardware, I would restore to factory settings to test the hardware. Then, if you have to RMA the notebook, it is completely stock for the tech.

hello sometimes happens that when i am on battery svchost and explorer.exe saturate ram. useing it up to 97 - 98 % . Do i need a fresh windows install?

 

My drive died. I dont have the recovery dvds.

So far my 4820tg has been good. I had it for close to a year now and the only problem I had before was that booting windows would take a veeery long time. Almost 5 minutes before firefox would open after bootup. But that was because the HD was slow. So i changed to a SSD and everything is good. I haven't had a problem with my notebook.

 

Hows the battery life with an SSD as an OS drive? I cant even get 3hrs out of the 4820tg anymore. Maybe because it only has about 10gb free and is very fragmented

I just waiting for SSD prices to fall a bit before I grab a 60 gb ssd, Canadian prices suck -_-.

 

I cant really tell much of a difference with the ssd either than it just loads apps and boots windows much faster. Now I do not even need to put the laptop to sleep in between classes, I can just shut it down and start it up again without much wait. I still get around 5 hrs wifi surfing and about 6-7 on word and thats with a 12% battery wear. If I'm constantly pushing the laptop like watching a movie then I get around 3 hrs

I've been having a couple issues and was wondering if you guys might be of help.

Lately I've been experiencing temporary freezes (a few minutes) in Firefox 4 (HW accel off), mainly with certain flash pages such as the Best Buy weekly ad. Can't really do anything with the system while this happens.

Additionally, when I run a Malwarebytes scan, the mbam window freezes about 15-20 seconds into the scan and the program stagnates. After 8-9 minutes it resumes, but I can do other things during this time. Older quick scans show a time of ~2 min, so it seems on the outset like a similar problem to the above one - a program freezes for 5-10 minutes.

I have stock video drivers (maybe should update those) as well. My drive (stock WD) shows no defragmentation so I'm not sure where these hiccups are coming from. Thanks for reading!

 

if I was you, I would perform clean install, load the drivers and then check the harddrive with HDTune.

 

Has anyone replaced the the stock HDD with something faster? How is the battery life and performance then? Is it worth it? I'm thinking about buying a 500GB 7200 RPM WD drive for $65 or just saving that money if there isn't anything noticeable with the upgrade.

yeah, I was considering that too, but for the time being, SSD is way too expensive for me :-(. And I don't have the patience to transfer stuff between my laptop and external HDD as this is my primary gaming+work computer.

 

you can keep the current drive and put small 40GB SSD drive in instead of optical drive just for OS and some apps. That shouldn't be that costly. If you get a deal or a rebate, you might not have to spend much more than you were planning with 7200rpm.

Looks like Acer has anounced 3 models of the new Timelines for the US market: an I3 5830T, an I5 4830T and an I5 3830TG. If this is right, no 4830TG this time around. Whats with that?

I guess Acer never noticed that the 4820TG would sell out from Newegg and Amazon in an afternoon and was constantly out of stock.

BTW, why is Acer putting 1066 RAM in these? They we putting 1333 RAM in the 3820TGs and they couldn't use it.

Hey, I'm having some overheating issues during gaming that never used to happen. My HDD stays at a cool 40c but my CPU can get up to a toasty 90c (although rarely) forcing shutdown. I can hear the fans whirring and there doesn't seem to be a huge build up of dust. EDIT: I've read some posts that say that temps in the 80's aren't some kind of doomsday so I'm wondering if it's some setting triggering the laptop to forcefully turn off...

PS: Nice to see that Crysis2 can run satisfactorily. Wonder what my chances will be at Skyrim and BF3 when they come out.
Any feedback on Witcher 2, wary because I've heard it is quite intensive.

 

If you have an I5, you should not be seeing throttling at 90C. If you have an I3, you will. The headroom on the I3 is much tighter than the I5. Even a small amount of dust or deterioration of the thermal compound could be a problem. If you're under warranty, it might be time to consider a trip to the Depot.

I'm i5, that's why I'm curious. I've given it a little clean up and temps were 60c on a oldish game. I'll play Crysis again and see what happens this time.
