I think there is a hacked hybrid graphics driver with newer amd mobility driver posted on the first page of 3820TG thread that links to a German forum.

I am also wondering about the same thing? But, the main issue for me is the intel driver that is incompatible with Windows Live Messenger. A post in the 3820TG thread mention about the issue of certain intel driver, which happens to be on the official hybrid graphics driver release, with Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Live Messenger and suggest updating the intel driver. But there is no hybrid graphics driver for 4820TG that has updated intel driver as far as I know.

Does anyone know if there is an official Acer hybrid driver with updated intel driver? If not does anyone know if there is someone that package their own hybrid driver with updated intel driver? I might have missed it, so if you know could you help me out here?

    Thanks!

That's why I normally prefer to pay a bit more for an OEM CPU. The I7 is supported in the 4820TG, there was actually a model that came from the factory with this CPU. I would guess the problem is in the ES.

So its about 2 months since I last replaced the my thermal compound and I'm starting to see bad results already. It is the first time I saw my cpu temps rose to 102 degrees max while gaming, despite having the notebook cooler below it. I'm beginning to suspect that thermal compound doesn't really help in reducing temps in a long term.

Can I ask you guys, what are your processor power management settings are ? I don't know why my cpu won't reduce its speed to compensate for the high temperature like most cpus do ?

The only solution I can think of is turning on my air-conditioner which will only raise the bills.

If anyone wants to overclock their 1st generation Core i processor in their 4820TG; use the overclocking method from the link below. Credits goes to DavyGT & nando4. ***Try at your own risk***

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...overclock-your-r2-over-166-a.html#post7288744

    Download SetPLL

setPLL is free and can overclock the 1st generation Core i processor just like SetFSB with the (ASUS G73JH clock generator). Make sure you type "setpll Alienware-m11xR2" in the "command prompt" and not just "setpll m11xr2" like in the tutorial.

Once you have set up setPLL, you will need to "create a task" in Windows 7 Task Scheduler to autostart the batch file every time you login/restart/resume/hibernate into Windows or you can use the automated script posted on the setPLL page.

Example of how to set up Windows 7 Task Scheduler:
    General
    - Run whether user is logged on or not
    - Hidden
    Triggers
    - On workstation unlock of any user
    - At log on of any user
    - At system startup
    Actions
    - Start a program
    - Program/script: C:\setpll\setPLL.bat
    - Add arguments (optional): Alienware-m11xR2 164
    Conditions
    Uncheck everything.

Have you already cleaned out the grill on the heat exchanger? Either with compressed air or opening the machine and using a brush? Dust build up can be a huge deal for small hard running laptops. I blow out the grill on my machine monthly and every time a big cloud of dust erupts out of it. Temps drop 10C or so for a while.

You mean the vents ? Hmmm... never checked. The gaps in between the grills seems pretty narrow.. Do you like suck it out or something ? Where do the dust comes out from ? But I always do clean the dust out of the fan.

The strange thing is, with air-conditioning my laptop's temperature decreases instantly. The highest it went while playing the same game that got me the 102C was 88C. Whats your ambient temperature ? Does your area feel cool ? My room is kinda warm sometimes.

Ambient temps definitely affect mine as well. My room's usually < 80F, nominally in the 70 to 75F range.

About cleaning it. When the machine is in operation, the fan sucks air in from the bottom and front of the machine, and pushes it out through a radiator on the side, where the hot air comes out. The fins in this radiator get clogged with dust from inside the machine pretty quickly. I shut my machine off and blow compressed air into the vents on the side where the exhaust usually comes out. Dust goes everywhere for a second. Turn it back on, temps lower again. It's a common laptop problem with dust, and an easy fix.

I use the hose attachment on the upright vacuum with the smallest brush attachment and clean the vents a couple times a year. I get the keyboard while I'm at it.

There are many ways to disable it.
    1. In BIOS, choose "discrete" for graphics.
    2. Use the 3820tray program I mentioned on the first post.
    3. I've read somewhere in this forum that there is also a registry entry to disable it.

Are you sure you tried every possible solution?

    Thanks for the solutions!
I've tried 2. and 3. before and they are not working.

Changing graphics in BIOS to discrete somehow disable all graphics mode in my window. I can only use Window 7 basic theme and no window Aero.
    Why?@.@

And, if possible I would like any one of the GPUs to be available upon my need. The discrete disables the other power saving gpu.

Windows 7 should automatically reinstall ATI drivers once you choose "discrete" in the BIOS. Try restarting again to see what happens.

3820tray was the only solution that allowed me to disable automatic graphics switching while having control of both GPUs. Some versions are more buggy than others.

    Hey guys and gals,

My 4820TG screen keeps freezing (turns black with nothing shown on screen) consistently (once per day, sometimes once every 2-3 days) and then the screen comes back and it says something like "display driver stopped working and has recovered". Then everything is normal again. After a few days, the same thing would happen again.

I was wondering if anyone has the same problem and if so, how to rectify this?

Many thanks for your help and input,
    Welly

Your GPU is crashing. This can be because of a faulty GPU, a faulty GPU bios, possibly a faulty video driver (not sure on that one) or an overheating GPU. Is yours running hot? hwmonitor can tell you (google it)... If it's running over 85 or 90C it could be a problem with the cooling system in your machine.

Most cooling problems can be fixed by cleaning the fan / radiator of dust and re-applying thermal paste to the CPU / GPU thermal pad. It's not an unknown problem on some machines for the thermal pad to make a poor connection to the GPU.

For those that replaced their ODD with a HDD caddy: How much force did you have to apply to get the caddy to engage? I have a Fenvi model off of ebay. I get it past the retention spring on the side (good amount of force required) and then it stops about a 1/4" from being fully seated in the drive bay. I feel like I am going to break something if I push any harder. Is this normal? Anyone have a better caddy model? I prefer to have one where you can replace the bezel with that of the laptop. Thanks in advance!

my tray slides in and out without any trouble at all. There's really no "engaging," it just slips in and once its all the way in its pretty secure. I know when its good to go because there's a blue light that comes on in the tray

I know what you mean. The ODD slips in/out effortlessly so I knew something was wrong with the caddy. Can you give me the name of the eBay seller or store where you purchased yours? Sounds like mine isn't compatible. Thanks!

update the catalyst drivers using the instructions from FAQ from the first page.

I also did a clean windows install before, although it might not be necessary.

micro center at some locations, but you'd have to pick it up in person.

if you got a friend or someone at eg. Philadelphia or so, where it is in stock, they can forward it to you.

apart from that it seems pretty much sold out everywhere.

    Hello!

When my 4820TG is connected to my friends philips TV with HDMI, the picture suddenly show strange colors.. i have to change source from HDMI 2 (connection between TV and PC) to HDMI 1, and than back to HDMI 2 to get it to work correctly again!

When i connect the same computere to other TV's, I have no problems!

What could cause this problem? Kinda annoying..

Hope u guys understand my question?! Hehe..

I think you narrowed it down to either that specific TV or the HDMI cable, since you said it works fine with other TVs. If the problem is with the TV, then I don't think there is much you can do about it.

I know its not the cabel. The same HDMI cabel works fine with other TV's, and I have also tried other cabels.. still same problem with the Philips telly!

No problems with same cabel and PC on my samsung television!

Have the latest drivers for the ATI-card, also got the latest BIOS for the computer!

Could it be that the telly doesn't support specific resolutions?!

Anyway.. thanks for the reply! Will try out more later this weekend ;)

    you keep on repeating yourself.

if the cable works fine in other TVs and if the other TVs are picking up the signal correct immediately and it's only the Philips TV that gives trouble, obviously the problem is on the Philips TV side.

my advice is that if you don't visit that friend too often and hook up your laptop to it all the time + already got a working solution, just don't bother.

why would you want to waste time?
