So I should enable discrete for the desired affect I'm looking for?

Ah ... that makes sense. I remember the power management button working when I was plugged in too for some reason. Perhaps I'm mistaken.

    Hi friends,

I bought this on march 2011 ..till 2 days before,it was working perfect. Yesterday evening I was trying to load some pages and it didnt work.. google chrome was asking me to reload each time. Then I noticed that my wifi signal was fluctuating (no access to internet, searching for wifi etc) . Everybody else in home were getting good signals on that time .I did windows recovery and I thought it would help me..but still the same situation...something wrong with wifi . please help me to sort this out.

    try wifi elsewhere to confirm.

    also try wired connection.

I'd say it has more to do with internet and router themselves.

(Experienced the same few days ago, it was the router)

what do specs have to do with internet connection? apart from it being N capable or not.

there are few of you on the same connection, that might be one of the causes.

if he uses torrents or downloads extensively, it may cause slow speeds for you.

as said, try wired connection, try a different wifi network.

in the meantime, who's the ISP, what are the declared speeds, how many people are using the same network, what is the router used, what network security is being used?

I'm really not into guessing game, post more information or don't expect relevant answer.

virgin media is throttling the lower speed connections.

you might have just ran over the daily cap.

I'm on virgin 50/5 connection and never had any real issues (apart from crappy d-link router and once when the service was down, for which they refunded me)

Check whether your SNR margin drops when you have connection problem, if that's the case, contact your ISP and request for a profile change.

I want it to switch to the power saving intel hd graphics simply when I unplug it from its power source and I want it to switch back to the ati, intensive graphics automatically when I plug it back in. Like it did before I reformatted.

Two possibilities. 1: Your card is dying. Wifi cards fail as often as hard drives (i.e. pretty often) because they make a lot of heat in a small space with their little transmitters. If it is bad, a replacement is ~$15 or so on ebay. But, it's also like that, 2: You've had an antenna pop off / start making a poor connection. To fix this, you'll just need to pull off the bottom of the computer and disconnect and re-attach the antenna connectors. They just pop right on / off. Often times just wiggling them will fix your problem.

Turn off the machine, remove the battery, take the four screws out of the bottom cover plate. then starting near the edge of the computer where there are three USB connectors, slip your fingernail under there and start prying it up. there are little snaps along the edges of the cover the should come up pretty easily as you work your way around. The wifi card is the tiny little card with two wires coming off of it (or one if one came loose).

    FENVI HDD CADDY received! (Finally)

I've just installed it, I've removed the flat bezel it came with and installed the 4820TG's one: PERFECT, the look it's just the same. I slipped inside a 320GB WD scorpio black, instantly recognized.

The only problem was that I had to make some extra hole on the femvi, for some extra plastic retention pin on the original optical drive bezel.

Now I just have to buy an external case for the original drive (and a bezel with the eject button!)

I used to have the Acer 4820TG-7805 (ATI 5650 card) last year, it was an excellent purchase and I loved it so much. Unfortunately it got stolen. So I bought another Acer 4820TG but this was model 6847 with an ATI 6550M card and 640GB HDD. I updated the RAM to 8GB.

Anyways, I remember on my old laptop I could reach 8 hours of battery life really easily. On my current new one I can't get any higher than 5 hours at the max. I don't know why, since I installed all the same drivers and the GPU switches to Intel whenever the laptop gets unplugged and I tried my best to close all unnecessary apps and services.

Kind of a stretch, but I'm just wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences as to what could be causing my battery life to be so low with my new laptop as compared to the old one.

Warranty is usually 1 year from Acer. I'm not sure if the Warranty cover accidentals.

If you registered for warranty (with the SNID: number on the bottom of the laptop) on the Acer website; you can check to see when the warranty ends. If you never registered the warranty then I have no idea if it still works.

Warranty in the US does not cover accidential damage. I think accidential warranties were offered in Asia. US warranties were one year depot repair or replacement.

If you're within your warranty period go to the Acer site and register. I just bought a 2 year extension to my warranty for a little over a hundred dollars.

Hi guys, first time posting here!

    I'm having a really annoying problem with my TimelineX 4820TG - 6847

When I bought the notebook it worked just fine. Then once a month, it started to have some issues with the ati card. Windows would just freeze, then a small crash and a black screen appears, only to finally work again stating that the "ati drivers stopped working".

Now every time I plug the computer the driver crashes and crashes and crashes, it tries to recover from the crash but then it crashes again. When I use the computer unplugged with the intel card it works just fine. Also works fine (some times) when I use the Ati card unplugged.

Also when it crashes the card fan starts to work at full speed.

Overall, the ati card works some times. But most of the time it just crashes. I'm with the 6550m by the way. Please, please help me!

You can't have flash, YouTube, games or any graphics acelerated hardware/software enabled when you are switching graphics; this includes Windows Messenger, IE 9, et cetera.

Best remedy is to close them and then restart the laptop.

Update your graphics drivers to the latest ones (released like two weeks ago). Read the posts I've made starting around page 450. I had the same issue as you with the driver crashing on the ATI card (specifically when watching HW accelerated flash videos on a browser though) and I got it resolved. It is most likely not a hardware-related issue so please don't send it off to Acer and waste a couple months getting it back because it probably won't be fixed. Updating the graphics drivers will probably fix it. If not, uninstall the drivers/software completely and then try again because that's what I had to do.

Hi, I have a problem in my 4820TG. My cpu temps reaches 105 degrees max! and my graphics reaches 90+ degrees. I believe the fan is the problem cause I can't really hear it spinning or maybe the BIOS? I currently have 1.17 and yea its old. I remember I used to hear the fan spinning when gaming and when I use Ubuntu o_o Can anyone help? Already changed my thermal paste and clean the dust last week but it doesn't change anything..

If you can't feel air blowing through the fan duct when your temps are high then you have a problem. I have never had my new laptop (6550M) reach above 95C when gaming and my old laptop (5650) never reached above 80C. If you can't replace the fan yourself then you'll have to send it in to Acer if you have a warranty still.

I feel the air blowing but I think its not enough, I just benchmarked a while ago using Heaven and my 5650 reached 94 degrees and the 460m reached 103 degrees core 0 and 105 degrees core 1. I think my warranty has ended and even if I have my warranty, I can't go there cause its 6 hours drive x_x

Is there another way like updating BIOS? o.o Thanks for the reply btw :)

First, use canned air to see if you've just got a dusty / clogged heat exchanger.

After that, you might have to tear the machine down and reapply thermal paste / make sure the heat sinks are making good contact.

It's also possible your fan is failing and not moving enough air.

Lastly, RWEverything might be able to control the fan speeds on your machine and force it to full throttle for more cooling. I've not played with it on my 4820TG as the GPU runs 85 and the CPU 90 max when gaming, so I'm not too sussed.

Checked the heat exchanger but not thorough though, ima check it next week, kinda busy..

Changed my thermal paste 1 week ago, I guess ima reapply it again next week and try if theres any significant difference..

For some reason RWEverything doesn't work for me

I envy j00 temps >_> btw have you tested it on Prime95? Would your cpu stays 2.7 100% load? o_O Just wondering..

    Thanks for the reply :)

    I've upgraded from an i3 330M to an i5 520M.

I've also applied new thermal paste, some artic silver 5, I've applied as thin as possible.

Now the CPU temp don't more than 70-75°C but when I play games, the GPU reach 102°C (monitored with HW Monitor).

Is it normal ? I guess I will have to reapply some thermal paste, because for the GPU, there was a red paste but not as thin as I've applied.

    Thx

no, that's not normal i suppose. the temp on the GPU is a bit too high.

but before taking any action, try to use a different software utility that measures the temperature to confirm there is an issue with the GPU temps.

but, nonetheless, I'm not too sure about this - did you apply the new thermal paste on the GPU as well, or did you just leave the old one on it?

Yep I applied new thermal paste on the CPU chip and CPU before reassembling the computer.

Maybe it lacks a little paste on the GPU, I remember that there was a lot of thermal paste on the CPU, maybe 0.25-0.5 mm and it was red (like ATI colors ^^)

On my 4820Tg there are some cooling pads for gpu and video ram, not thermal paste.

I think it's because the whole dissipator covers both cpu and gpu and it's difficult to have it perfectly "flat" (or parallel?) with the surfaces of both chips, so on the cpu they put thermal paste (maybe assuming contact will be ok there) and thermal pads on the vga.

If you put thermal paste instead of thermal pad on the vga, maybe you don't have a perfect parallel contact between the two surfaces.

Again, sorry for my english :D

I saw the termal pads for memory chips but also thermal paste on the GPU ...

Hi, currently I'm using Acer TimelineX 4820TG i5-460M ATI 5650M using Insyde BIOS v1.25,
I want to run 64-bit guest OS with VMWare, but the guest OS failed to start because there is no virtualization support or the virtualization has been disabled in BIOS.
Does Intel Core i5-460M support the virtualization technology?
Where in BIOS I can find the menu to enable/disable the virtualization on this laptop?

    regards,

I think there's an option called "Intel VT-d" and "Intel VT-x" in the bios. Search in the tabs, maybe the 3rd ou 4th tab of the bios menu.

Anyone how has a clue about my temp ? Do I have to apply more paste on the GPU ?

    Thx,
    Big.

The thermal paste is something new to me for the GPU/heat sink on the 4820TG. If you read the early posts in this thread, I recall owners reporting a thermal pad on the GPU. Is this right Owners? With your GPU temp, I would guess that there is a bad connection in the junction. The lack of thermal pad would be a prime suspect to me. Paste is not meant to bridge large gaps in a heat sink. I would at least investigate further. If you need a pad, I would read to see if anyone has used a copper shim and paste instead of the thermal pad.

The problem is that I throw it to garbage, it was red (like I said before). When I removed the thermal pad, I touch this "paste" and it tore immediatly in two or three parts ...

The copper shim is not a bad idea, it will fill the gap and with thermal paste, the junction will be better than before ... Thinking about it ... Meanwhile I will uxse only the intel GPU.
I will take some photographie when I will disassemble it one more time.

    Thx

EDIT 2: someone on a french forum told me to buy thermal pad to fit the gap (I think it's less than 1mm). But I don't know what 5W/MK means ? I can see it everywhere so I think it the average, but maybe there's a better solution (I've got some shims from an airsoft gun but I can't find them ...)

I've orderered 1mm and 0.5mm thermal pad. I keep you up to date

EDIT 4: I received my thermal pads. I ordered one 1cmx1cmx0.5mm and it fits perfectly the GPU. I've got a blue screen last time I tried dead island, but the dump talk about intel stuff so I'm asking if I've got to reinstall a new fresh windows or not ? because of a conflict between i3 drivers and i5 driver ...
Somone got a clue for me ?

EDIT 5: maybe some unstability because the laptop was totally screwed off !
Temp with CPUID Hw Monitor during a Dead Island play :
CPU 72°C max (maybe because of fresh Artic Silver 5 paste ?)
GPU 82°C max (like original thermal performance)

new temps : 93°C for GPU in Red Orchestra 2 game ... do you know a good thermal paste ?

Anyone else having issues with the scroll feature on the touchpad in Firefox? It will randomly stop working after a few minutes of browsing the web and require a Firefox restart.

It always works in other apps though (although I cannot speak for other browsers since I only use Firefox), such as Microsoft Office. It will also always work when viewing a PDF through Firefox.

I updated the synaptics driver so I am assuming it's a Firefox thing? Any suggestions?

    Thanks

I never had that issue. Try the synaptics drivers from laptopvideo2go.com, those are the ones I use. Get the latest unmodified one.

Thanks for the responses. I am currently running the current Acer synaptics drivers from their website. Strangely it's still happening.

Also, iwin2000, laptopvideo2go.com seems to be a fairly unorganized website. It has a lot of ads, but as far as I can tell it only supplies nvida drivers? I don't see any synaptics drivers on the site.

these are the latest generic synaptics touch drivers: Drivers | Synaptics

this is the spot I was referring to on laptopvideo2go: Touchpads - LaptopVideo2Go Forums
but you're right, that forum is rather outdated.

So...I don't want to re-install windows over again for a graphic update. What is the procedure for removing the old graphics driver and installing the new one?

What I will do in this case :

    - uninstall driver (with Add/Dell program and functionnalities)
    - download driver sweeper and install it
    - reboot in safe mode (press F8 or F10 several times at booting before windows Logo)
(If you've got problem you can also wait for windows logo and suddendly shutdown your computer, then at next boot windows will offer you the safe mode)
    - launch driver sweeper then erase all ATI traces and remains
    - reboot
    - download latest driver from Acer Website (the driver for 6550m and other, first graphic card driver in the liste)
    - install it

I think it's quite a good way to do it.

Hello everyone. Has anyone tried running The Witcher 2 on this laptop?
I am getting about 28 FPS at the lowest possible settings. My PC has the following specs:

    CPU: i5-480m (2.67-2.93 ghz)
    GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6550m, 1gb 600/800 core/memory
    RAM: 8gb
    Resolution: 1280x720

I was wondering if ~30 FPS with those specs at lowest settings is correct. I feel like the game should run smoother.
