Try open Catalyst Control Center - Power, disable PowerPlay and enable it back.

I've always have this lingering problem. My comp would freeze up and the hd light would be constantly lit up. I have this problem with my old hd that came with the laptop and my new SSD that I put in 1 month ago. So I'm ruling out that it's my hd problem. What I notice is that I have a higher chance of crashing when I'm using any web browser with flash content on the page. I'm guessing it's something to do with the 5650 and flash not working well with each other. Is any one else having the same issues?

If its flash, you could try disable hardware accelerations.
Right click flash, settings, go to leftmost tab and untick it.

Hmmmah, seems to be common for people to start having odd problems about a year and a half owning this model.

In my case there's this weird issue with the power button. Sometimes when I push the power button to turn on, the machine will sound like it's starting up, but then stops. I will have to push the power button repeatedly to get it to actually turn on. Sometimes when I try to get the laptop out of standby, it will turn off improperly (i.e. like a cold shutdown). This happens both with battery and without battery.

Anyone else have this power button problem?

Wouldn't that kill the performance of the flash playback?? Also when it does crash, Windows has no record of anything wrong in the Event logger. It just said that power was interrupted which is normal because I had to hard reset the laptop. Does anyone one if ATI CCC will generate a crash report. If so, where can I find it?

    hi all,
so my built in keyboard is not functioning (tried a new KB, but it must be the board. the external usb works), i cant use the FN keys on my external keyboard and cant emulate it cos i dont know the scan codes.

now, is there a way to activate the Wifi/Bluetooth ON|OFF dialog without using FN+F3?

Acer for some reason decided that having a wifi 'always on' in the BIOS is useless and now i can't turn on the wifi.... :/

    thanks in advance!
    any help is greatly appreciated.

hi thanks, but no, when the wifi is off (before turning it on with Fn+F3) it doesn't appear under the device manager and also disabled in the mobility center.
if you have this model, try to turn the wfi off (Fn+F3 > Wifi > OFF) and see that it is as if you don't have WiFi at all.
What i need is a way to launch the Launch Manager Wifi panel without using Fn+F3...can this be done and if so how?
    thanks again

Are there any higher res screens that can replace the standard 4820tg screen?

This might already be on one of the 486 pages of this thread but I am hoping someone will be kind enough to just tell me.

Why the latest ati mobility catalyst suite download page says, it is not compatible with laptop contain switchable graphics and the download is a 1.1MB file. Is this means we are no longer able to use latest ati drivers...? or is there any other download link ?

This 1MB app is just a downloader that checks your GPU and notebook and if these are supported- downloads the actual drivers.

found this ^ at the bottom of the download page, isn't laptops with switchable graphics include ours too..?

Hey guys, after a year got a problem with the 4820TG switchable graphics.
The auto-switch I configured on the CCC Advanced window to the ATI 5650 does not work and the manual switch on configure graphics, the basic command window does not work either. I am effectively stuck on the intel integrated graphics card.

I am running the latest version of ATI Catalyst drivers.

Can anyone suggest a solution to this problem?

Start with testing new Realtek audio drivers.
Another thing that seems to often cause sound stuttering is a wireless driver.
It must be something with latency.
So make sure those two are up to date first.

    Hi everybody!
Is there anybody here who have replace the dvd-rom with a caddy for hdd? I want to know which screw has to be unscrewed in order to extract the dvd-rom.

have another issue : i replace the actual hdd by a ssd. I didn't want to use the acer recovery to reinstall the system (because of all the crapwares from acer), so i use a copy of windows 7 home premium to install the system and put my license key when i was asked to. But when i want to activate windows, it says that the key is not valid so i have to call to activate my copy of windows. Is it the only solution?

    Thanks for your help.

Anyone having trouble prising the back panel off? Obviously I've unscrewed all screws as shown in the guide but it just won't come off - at all. Might find a way of getting to the fan once I've done that.

I recently started having an odd display issue. A minute or two after I start up, the screen will go black and only the mouse cursor will show. It can be moved around, and will even change to a text cursor or hand cursor depending on what its supposed to be hovering over, but I can't get anything else to show. This only occurs on the Radeon. Once I switch to the Intel card, everything displays just fine. Any suggestions?

I feel like my speaker volume is lower than it used to be. Usually somewhere around 30-40% was quite audible, but now I have to go to 50% or above for it to really be clear.

Things seem fine with a headset compared to before. Is it possible my speakers are damaged somehow? Nothing has happened with my laptop. All my drivers are up to date. Not sure what it could be...

You're loosing your hearing probably because you have an inoperable brain tumor. ;) It's either that or the speakers are collecting dust or the driver core is just wearing out from age.

Glad to hear it about the tumor. Speakers work by coiling a copper thread around a magnet and feed power to drive the speaker cone. The Acer speakers are so small and fragile that my guess is that the wire loosens up over time, causing more imput to get the same output. The dust issue is a bit more complicated. Since the magnet attracts dust with small metalic particles, it is hard to keep clean over time. The other problem is that access is hard to get without taking the notebook apart. You can't reach the speakers by taking the keyboard alone off. You have to split the bottom casing, take the speakers out and use a small vacuum attachment to clean out the dust. It's really not worth the effort. Just live with the fact that you need to turn the volume up a bit.

    hello.
I have Acer 4820TG with core i3-330M and ati 5470. During unlocked BIOS flashing notebook has been totaly hang at final stage (message appears on the screen "updating EC firmware..). after power off it won't start. leds a second light up and faded out. Removing cmos battery does not help. As I understand it in this notebook BIOS settings are not reset by pulling out the battery. Tell me how to reset the BIOS settings hardware way?

P.S. And tell me it possible to this model of laptop to install the i7 620M?

1- Use driver sweeper and clean out the amd drivers
    2- Reboot
3- Install the 4820tg amd drivers (latest from acer which works with the 5650m)

Skip this if you're don't want latest amd drivers (v12.3)
4- Reboot in discrete mode by pressing F2 at bios posting and changing the settings, install the latest amd drivers from amd website
    5- Reboot in switchable mode

Hey guys, I'm having trouble with my laptop thinking there's a second monitor and therefore letting the mouse extend off to the right indefinitely. I recently had to install display drivers from this post since acer didn't feel like packing in the drivers for the 6550M when shipping my laptop. Soon as I installed them I noticed the extended display problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled and same result. I reformatted and this was the first thing I did.

Anybody else here have the same problem and have a solution?

There must be something wrong, open task manager and check cpu % occupation, it should NOT be anything near 100% if you are only watching a video.

If CPU occupation is normal, then you have something wrong in the heat dissipation compartment.

6550 I think you can do a vbios mod for the 5650 to get higher voltages

You laptop needs a cleaning job those temps are very bad I'm idling at around 45c and 55c while browsing/watching videos

For those in the know, are there reliable/easy-to-install drivers for the switchable graphics on this laptop for Linux?

I recently built a new home PC and my laptop is no longer my main gaming machine, so I'd like to throw a distro on there. Last time I tried Ubuntu the driver's or rather a script existed but I could never get it to work properly and had terrible battery life. Still get 4-6hrs in Windows. Ubuntu, at the time, got 2-3 max.

Something is very wrong with my 4820TG.

I ran chkdsk today. It took over 2 hours to complete.

Now my fan is running nonstop and CPU temps are high 60s or low 70s deg C with no programs running. GPU is around 55-60 deg C.

Why are my temps so high after running chkdsk? Before I had no temperature concerns whatsoever, and I was idling my CPU in the low 40s.
