Look at your task manager for programs that are eating your cpu.

It was svchost consuming about 25% of my CPU, but driving temps up into the 60s or low 70s. I closed it and now my temps are in the low 40s (but the fan won't turn off).

Maybe this isn't appropriate for this thread and I have to go to another computer help forum. Just seems so weird. And I can't find my chkdsk log (do I need to specify that I want a log to be stored?).

Funny thing is that last week I wanted to run chkdsk and Windows said it would do it at the next boot since the drive was in use. But, it didn't actually run until today, and in the last week I must have rebooted a few times.

But it's so strange that I'm having these issues after chkdsk. It must have changed or done something.

Use the AMD driver from the Acer page for your model. This will enable the switch option.

On which state are you now?

Have you installed any AMD and/or Intel graphic driver?

If yes, remove them all completely.

    Reboot.

Install only the AMD driver from the Acer site.

    Reboot.

    The switch option should work.

Go to Acer.com Worldwide - Select your local country or region and download/install the AMD graphics driver for the 4820TG. Ignore the individual downloads for Intel or ATI.

For atl+F10 to work, you will need to download/install the application "LaunchManager" for the 4820TG. Also, found on the manufacturer site.

Sup guys. I recently upgraded my Catalyst drivers to 12.2. Before updating, I could barely run League of Legends on low settings. Now, I can run Diablo 3 on max. However, since updating, I have had problems when using the high performance graphics. I press the sleep button on my laptop and when I wake my computer up, the screen is always completely black. On top of that, sometimes when I start up my computer, the display is completely black. I tried messing around with catalyst settings like disabling powerplay but haven't found a solution yet.

It isn't prohibited anymore. We've changed that rule for your convenience.
As long as you've actually bought MacOS it's fine.

While we're talking rule changes- you can also post service manuals from now on.

    Wow awesome! :)
My 4820tg is still chugging and doing great since replacing the keyboard (less than 15 bucks) and getting an SSD for it (way more than 15!)

Now checking for any driver updates.

I'm going on a trip soon and my battery wear is pretty high now. I don't think I am in warranty anymore, does anyone know which battery I should get for the 4820TG?

    Hello everybody
My HDD is dead and I need to buy a new one. My old one was 500GB ,5000 RPM. If I buy 1TB with 7000RPM is it OK? It will be supported by the mainboard and BIOS?? My 4820tg is i5-480M, ATI HD 5650, 6GB RAM,...
And btw what is the max supported capacity for the HDD on a laptop? Is the speed of the HDD changes something?
    Thanks

You have to look for a HDD with size 2,5" and Sata. All of them should work inside the 4820TG.

If you want a fast system, take a look at the SSD section.

One thing that might make a difference- normal HDDs are 9.5mm in height whereas some high capacity ones that use three platters are 11mm.
Most drives these days use two platters and are 9.5mm but some might still be 11mm- the latter might not fit perfectly.

Thank you guys. Its OK I bought 1TB 2.5 WD. Have another question... I put my old hard in an external casing and I can read it. Is there some way (and with what software) to copy from it my old system on a DVD and reinstall it directly instead of installing Windows, and 50 more different softwares and remake all my old settings which will take me a lot, really a lot of time. Thanks again

hi everyone, haven't been here in a while.

quick question. if I want to reapply thermal paste - cpu's fine, been there, done that.

but how is it with gpu chip? I mean the AMD one. is there thermal paste too? on the past laptops, there was usually something like pad or at least the paste was thicker than on the cpu.

can I apply the same thermal paste (arctic silver 5) on both cpu and gpu?

    thanks

Yes. There is paste on the CPU and GPU. There are also thermal pads covering other items like the controller chip. make sure you don't loose the pads. Use the same paste on the GPU and CPU. I recommend IC Diamond 7 paste as it seems to perferm best on my 3820TG. Don't forget, while you have it apart, get the dust out of the fan and the heat exchanger vent. Also, I use coffee filters to clean the surfaces because they don't shed lint.

Don't use Acronis or Norton Ghost - they cost money. There are plenty of free drive cloning options out there.

Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

Clone Windows 7 hard drive/dynamic volume with Windows 7 clone software.

    Clonezilla - About

As long as the new drive is bigger than the old one, you can clone the old one to it. I recommend Macrium Free Reflect (first link). Quick and easy.

False. If someone wants to clone their HD, then keep backups or images of the drive in case of future failure, Macrium or Easeus are the way to go.

Acronis and Norton are cluttered and unnecessary.

Hi everybody, I thought I read somewhere that you can install a hdd mod instead of the optical reader? Does anyone know or remember the instructions to do this? The ssd's are getting very cheap and I want to use my hdd as storage and remove the optical drive since I never use it. Thanks

    Hey guys
so glad I found this forum I have a few questions

People above are looking at upgrading their Ram, if I do that, what kind of difference will it make?

    Also,
Have any of you tried to play BF3 on their 4820?
I tried and had it on low settings and the frames were fine for me but I have that black ground bug where some of the floor tiles don't show up.

I tried uninstalling BF and reinstalling, didn't work
Tried doing the same with windows, didn't work
tried downloading drivers and either it won't accept because they aren't acer drivers or they go to install and fail.

Can I completely remove the acer windows on it and buy a fresh windows 7 and install it so I can download drivers myself?

Since I hadn't tried anything for a few months, I downloaded an old driver this morning just for the sake of it and... it works lol
now there's no black ground and BF3 is running even smoother
    finallyyyyy

So now I'm just wondering about the Ram

That seems pretty solid to me. I don't think you will get much benefit in upgrading the memory.

But maybe someone else can answer that question more convincingly.
And also, does any one know the best place to get a battery replacement?

depends on how much you want to spent - in other words, if you want a genuine or just a non-branded replacement.

from my experience, genuine cost about 2x the price of say ebay ones.

it will have 0 impact on your FPS when gaming, but it's nice to have, if you work with software that can utilize more RAM - like virtual machines etc.

The RAM is cheap these days, but doubling your RAM will not improve your gaming experience, so if that's your only reason for that, just keep the cash.

I'm also looking for a new battery I forgot to put that in. It feels like mine lasts about an hour when not plugged in. I watched ONE episode of game of thrones in bed and it was almost dead by the time it finished.

I don't use any software that will use ram like Photoshop or whatever so yeah I'll just save the money
    Thanks

    Hi,

i've updated my 4820TG by adding a Crucial M4 SSD.. It works fine but i noticed that when i'm in powersaving mode (using Intel HD3000 video card), i get crashs sometimes (can be 3 or 3 in the same hour and just 1 time per week).

If anyone can help me, i would really appreciate.

It is the same core and in fact the same card but 6550 is factory overclocked and to ensure stability overvolted.
So if you try to OC both from their respective stock clocks 6550 will go higher due to higher core voltage.

so I repasted my 4820TG, but I'm not too happy about the temps, I think they even got worse.

    Tmax:

    CPU after 20 mins on prime95 = 80°C
GPU after 20 mins on FurMark = 94°C

    use HWMonitor to check temps.

beforehand, the GPU temps were ~82-85°C as far as I remember

should I be worried, or just leave it and not to mess with that any more?

    EDIT:

used copper shim instead of pad, as recommended by downloads and the GPU max temp after 20 mins in FurMark is 78°C.

    what a difference.

The TimelineX series has ended. The new version is the M3 Timeline Ultrabooks which come in 14 and 15" sizes, have a Kepler GT640M GPU and 17W low powered CPUs. Same craptastic display. I would look at the Dell 14 when it is released or the Gigabyte U2442N.
