The need to stretch my dollars as far as possible, yet retain good quality, is something I am taking to a new level.
In general, for those who own any of the Aspire models, do you think they are good value for the money, yet still have quality close to Dell, or HP?

New Gemstone Blues (Aspire 6920G and 8920G) are better than old Gemstones (Aspire 5920G as top model).

New TravelMates and Extensas don't have problems with build.

love my cheap little Aspire 5315  ,,, it has to be the most easliy upgradeable laptop i've ever owned

11 screws and you can pull the CPU out,,, takes 10 minutes the first time,,,
now i can upgrage a CPU in this model in 3 minutes start to finish :D

i've owned it since Nov 1, 2007... w/ ZERO issues or problems..

best price/performance laptops in my oppinion,,, there are better manufactured laptops,, and there are companies with better support..

it all comes down to what you NEED and what you wanna pay for it.
i'd like to own a better laptop.... but mine does all i need and after downgrading to XP it's now a speed deamon too!

    later,
    bigO

I appreciate everyone's input. I am not trying to sound predjudiced.. just don't know too much about laptops yet. Had heard mixed comments on both Acer and Asus. Definitely more interested in both of these. I have noticed that Asus is not listed in quantity on eBay, and apparently is not easy to be found at Best Buy or some mainstream stores, which I guess confirms what I had stated to suppose -- that Asus is more well known among the computer enthusiast realms, rather than consumer or mass appeal type devices.

I was wondering where to look for both Acer and Asus with XP Pro installed, in mint condition, with restore discs, etc? Looks like the vast majority of stuff lately seems to have Vista. I am getting used to Vista on my desktop but don't know if I want in on the laptop.

there is a great site w/ instructions for downgrading Acer Aspire 5315,, it's been reported to work on other INTEL based acers... but if downgrading your OS be sure to have all the required drivers for the OS burned to disk before beginning the XP install process...

    http://soulpass.com/2007/11/10/inst...essional-sp2-on-acer-aspire-5315-2153-laptop/

that's where all my info about downgrading came from

you might want look into model with vista buiness most them can be downgrade to xp legaly some eve have disk in box they called dual load model

but only realy apply machine load with vista buiness home premiers does not contain any downgrade rights

alot extensa and travelmates have downgrade right if they have vista buinesss

I Agree with bigozone my acer was nice casue it cound be moded unlike my current machine not alot options mind you being 12 inch laptop limnts everything

also vista with sp1 is realy not that bad once you remove all extra junk on acer and update it will fine

Sorry for the bad wording post , I will delete it ASAP.

ASUS is more well known among the computer enthusiast realms , rather than consumer or mass appeal type devices,I think it is true or almost true.

I think ASUS is a good brand and it used to be the best ODM but now , it is foucing on its own line of laptops and motherboard.

The suprior quality MB made it so oddly raved brand by you called computer enthusiast realms.

But as a guy in ASUS forum told me , it was originally a part of Acer group, in 80th separated from Acer.

I think BenQ used to be a part of Acer group also.

Now , BenQ is the no3 brand in Thailand and I think BenQ is a good brand but not as popular as ACer or ASUS in the US.

Thank you for your kind comment.

Cause I realized that I had one of maybe a billion of the 4920G laptops that did not work well after my friend bought the same laptop and I was impressed with its feature and build.

I apologize to all people here and I encourage more people to try it out yourself ,rather than listening to a reviewer or others.

My experience change my opinion always so I will try not to be judgemental on others.

I truly do appreciate the insight and background.
One more question if you all don't mind.
Is there a particular model of both Acer and Asus that is not real spendy, yet could be thought of as a "multimedia" capable version -- something with 2 gigs of RAM?

Are you looking for a 15.4 or smaller?

if so I would recommend you ASUS F8SN , M51sn or Acer 5920G.

if you like bigger than 15.4 , there is the excellent new blue acer , chosen for editor's choice at laptopmag and other sites, AS6920g.

this model has 2 screen resolutions :
1 .1366 x768 WXGA HD Acer CineCrystal TFT.
2 1920x 1080 full WUXGA Full HD Acer CineCrystal TFT.

both have the 16:9 HD raito screen and the sound system is outstanding for a laptop audio.

also there is the PCW editor's choice ASUS M70SN X1 , which is a good but a huge , it's even got dedicated 10-key and really amazing sound system and costs just a bit moe than weak HP Pavillion DV9700T.

I personally like the Acer 6920G , it is a really nice looking, handsome lappy , you can check it out at a circuitcity.

I am probably buying it soon, wish it were smaller though.

I hope this site'll review it but I doubt that since I never seen any Acer/ASUS review here besides a couple of user-reviews(submitted by forum members).

now, you can read Kevin's review here too , it is very detailed as usual and I think the ASUS is an excellent mutimedia notebook , too big to call it a notebook though.
