I've had an Acer Aspire 3023 WLMi since November, and recently the screen will go grey with random different shades of grey lines, so nothing is visable and requires restarting to work again. What is causing this? Does the monitor require drivers other than the graphics card drivers?

No drivers are needed for the monitor. If you are having such distortions then it might be more likely a graphics card or LCD problem. Try connecting(if you can) to an external monitor. This should help in identifying the problem component.

    Thanks for the reply.
It seems to happen when the screen resolution changes, e.g. going into or out of a game. I uninstalled and re-installed the graphics card drivers but the problem still persists. I also recently noticed, around the the same time as the screen problems started, a crack has appeared at the bottom left of back of the monitor by the hinge. This appears to have been caused by opening and closing laptop and not acidental damage because it doesn't start from the edge of the monitor, if that makes sense. Could these problems be related do you think? And if so, as my laptop is only 9 months and still covered by the warrenty, would Acer mend it?

The crack might not be, if as you say it developed due to bad hinges. In most laptops such distortions are caused by bad graphics cards. The screen unless it is mishandled should run fine.

I think they should fix it, but depends on whether they determine the cause of the crack was an accident or otherwise. Try giving them a call and see how it goes.
