    Acer Aspire, 6 weeks old, dust under screen already...

    Hi guys,

    I purchased an Acer Aspire 5745PG roughly less than 6 weeks ago from Comet. I needed to replace my old HP DV7 which was on it's last legs and wouldn't charge any more. It also had serious problems with dust getting under the screen, and under my PC World warranty I had the screen replaced twice.

    So I purchased the Acer, great spec (details under profile) for the price but it still cost me £550, it's been sat on my desk at University and has only been moved once (placed in a laptop backpack and a car journey home) yet i've opened up the lid today and noticed about 3 white specks of dust under the screen, 1 top left, 1 top middle, and one down the bottom below the start button.

    The top two are clearly visible when the unit is on, I've contacted Acer support UK and they have offered to repair it under warranty but I can't help but think I've been here before. I've also got assignments due in may so I can't send it off now...

    If it's happened within 6 weeks then surely it will just happen again on the new screen within time, after all it happened with my HP and the final time it was away for repair for nearly 2 months!

    When I bought the laptop I actually checked to see if the screen was sealed and it does look sturdy and sealed but obviously not well enough.

    Does anyone have any experience with this, or any home ways to remove the dust? I read somewhere about tapping the screen but I've tried to no avail.

    Feeling pretty annoyed that this problem has occured on another machine, I'm aware it may sound picky and apart from the specs I must say the build quality is sound and the laptop performance is excellent.

    If i was you i'll till the end of your assignments, then contact Acer again to have a repair as they looks making no probs to do it under warranty.

    Or send right now.
    Sended to Acer mine for a Hard drive prob, it came back quite fast, it tooks me around 10 days the time to send it, repairing and then come back. That's quite good!

    I have removed dust from underneath screens before.
    You have to determine whether or not its worth it... Chances are there will still be a very slight mark where the dust was if you use your finger to remove it...

    Also I've never done it with an LED screen, it could be a lot more difficult...

    But generally, you can just take the LCD screen out of the laptop, take out 2 screws then pry off the frame and get at the diffuser sheets where the dust is. Do it with plenty of light and in an area with as little dust as possible.
    The dust in the screen can be under or on top of any of the diffuser sheets, there might be several of them.

    You could always take this opportunity to upgrade your screen to a 1080p one.


    On a side note, one thing I don't get about anyone who is even a little bit geeky about their laptop, is why have only 1. It makes life so much easier the more laptops you have, IMO at least a 2nd for backup is a necessity.
    There is a whole range of laptops one can build for 100$. I'd suggest an HP nc6400 for something cheap and reliable.

    That's an impressive turn around time!

    I think it's likely I will send off the laptop once this semester has finished. It's good to hear positive news about servicing, I've had some poor experiences previously.


    I may have a look at how the screen is assembled, it's a touch screen display and from what I can see there is one panel of plastic protecting the screen, with the actual display slightly behind, leaving a space in-between. Obviously gaps in the sealer have let dust get in between the panels and have now stuck on the screen.

    I've built two desktop PC's before, so I like to think I have some experience in assembling although from looking at the casing of the laptop this might be a different ball game.

    A secondary laptop is a good shout, I may take a look.





    Also I think this post is a warning to any readers and a plea to manufacturers that double layered screens just don't work!

    From some further forum reading I've gathered that the screens can never be completely sealed to accommodate features e.g webcam. So dust getting under the screen is probably inevitable.

    So realistically when the screen is replaced it will only be a matter of time before dust gets into that as well.

    A lesson learned, i'll never buy a laptop with this type of screen again.
