    Hey:(,

I had upgraded my Acer Aspire 1714Smi from Windows XP to Windows Vista Ultimate a long time ago. On trying to solve a hardware problem i formated my hard disk. After recovering my notebook and trying to upgrade to Vista i can not use Windows Aero and Windows Movie Maker and i get the message "Video Card does not meet minimum requirements".

Acer does not support Vista in my machine and NVIDIA after trying upgrade my video card drivers redirects me to my computer's manufacturer. When i unload this driver for XP from Acer i get the same message.

Everybody says that Vista Aero can not cope with my machine because of the video card requirements but i beleive this is wrong because i had been working Vista in the same machine for years.
Can anybody tip me solving this problem?

You could try updating the driver by using the device manager. Go to Device Manager, Find the Video card and right click on it. Select update driver, then direct it to the place where the nvidia driver extracted its files. Usually in My Computer/C:/Nvidia. Find the INF file and use it.

Thank you for your answer. :(
I have done this already but there is no new update (it says that Windows has decided that my driver is up to date). This happens because Acer does not support this notebook in Vista only in Windows XP. And Nvdia suggests me to contact my manufacturer....

But i have worked this machine with Vista and everything worked perfectly until i erased my hard disk. Since then the driver i download from acer for my video card do not colaborate with vista in Windoes Aero and windows movie maker.

So i need still any other suggestion if any ..

You have to force it to use the driver. Not have it search for the driver, it never finds one. If you set up the option in your user setting, so that I can PM you. I'll PM you my phone number, and walk you through the driver install.

Try Windows Update. It may have the driver.

    Hello:(

This issue is not solved even by Acer so I would appreciate help through this web page in case sb in the community would give could idea to our discussion.

Please note that I am using windows update (on recommended updates) but still there are no drivers available.

What I done so far is:

    1. On Using advice manager
after “Browse my computer for driver software”
I chose “let me pick a list of device drivers on my computer select the driver you want to install for this hardware”
    I checked “show compatible software”
    Taped “next”
    it says “installing driver software”
So the installation of the driver is OK
Please note that I have the driver on DVD from acer and it says when I set up that it is for Windows2000 and WindowsXP only.
But as I said, I had been working this notebook with the same video card with vista and aero and Movie maker worked perfectly. That’s why I assumed that the driver my notebook is installing afterwords is different than the one Acer gives as support from its site. The notebook could not played before and after reinstalling the system not. Perhaps some information it had the notebook(NB) its self is missing.
Now acer does not support this model to vista. If i use the support from Acer they only turn the NB to windows XP. I have done this already and then upgraded to vista and this themas are still not working.

The driver I have is: VGA_NVidia_5.3.5.1_XPx86

The characteristics of my display and video are (I re-write them form manual):
17” Desktop LCD at 1280X1024 Super
    Simultaneous LCD and CRT display
    Dual independent display support
    Hardware 3D graphic engine

The card writen in my NB is: nVIDIA GeForce FXGo5700 128MB

    2. On trying to understand why aero now is not working
On Appearance and Color Settings there is no color scheme to Windows Aero so to pick. In help it gives the hind that this is because my computer might not meet hardware requirements for running windows Aero

Any clue what other driver i could download compatible with vista for my PC? nVDIA site does not help me at this and i am transfered to my manufacturer's site where the only driver available for my NB is the one i have.

If not, i am thinking perhaps to install another video card so vista regards it as compatible would solve the problem for good. Can this be done?

You need to select: browse computer for driver software. Then, browse to where the ATi Driver you download is extracted. Select it and click next. It may say its an un verified driver, but install it anyway. Then reboot.

    Hi:( ,

I did that as well. I set up driver it does not work under Vista. Now, i download every possible driver Acer has issued unter vista for aspire models but i have noticed so far that after my machine Acer uses Intel for video cards and not nvidia. My model has two types of cards drivers one intel and other nvidia the same model has small and big screen. Obviously, they had identified the problem then, kept it in secret and keep sale the model. But i stil can not understand why it work once. What else could i do. Any idea?[/FONT]

Go back to XP or upgrade to 7.( Sometimes 7 can find driver through Windows Update).
