So today was the day I sat down with an Acer technician to show him exactly what was going wrong with my system (and explained that it's happening to OTHER systems as well).

    Here's the bullet points:
    • I was only able to get the machine to throttle ONCE in front of them. I'm absolutely stumped why my 6920G behaved so well (do they have Acer-be-good signals on their property? ;) ), but I think it may have something to do with my resetting of the GPU back to stock clocks. I'm going to keep it there and see.
    • That being said, they at least know that the system does throttle at a lower temperature than it should. They suspect it's a motherboard, fan, or BIOS issue, but couldn't hammer it down without taking my system for more time than I had.
    • I was not able to get a stock 6920G to throttle AT ALL. They brought out a model with a T5750 Core 2 Duo and BIOS v1.06, and using ORTHOS I was able to get it to and above 60 degrees without a single stutter or throttle. This may denote that the problem is not as systematic as we originally imagined, or that the demo system was the exception.
    • In any case, they'll happily take my system and fix it up properly whenever I don't need it anymore. (of course, I will need to slide the original CPU back in)

So, what does that mean for those of us who do throttle every now and again?
Unfortunately, there isn't a one-size-fits-all fix. Since the problem occurs across CPUs and BIOSes, it's up to YOU, the user, to find a solution that works. And what works for you may not work for everyone else.

As for me, I'm personally going to keep tinkering.

Oh, and remember, there's still the temporary solution through RMClock to consider.

They fixed the problem for you?
Urm...?? I can't understand some parts you mentioned.
Did you mean they used your laptop to demo by switching the Processor to T5750? Lastly, they tweaked your Windows Vista too?

They did not fix the problem - they simply showed that a different 6920G with a T5750 does not throttle.
They swapped my hard drive into the other 6920G to prove their case. Since Vista recognized the different CPU, it did reconfigure itself slightly, but it seems to be back to normal.

    that just...... sucks..... =_=

as a side note though... seemingly the "newer" ones have less of a tendency to throttle.... mine only started 1.5 years after i got it.... really makes this issue interesting...

Hi, why do we have to have a new thread on this, can't it be kept into the original one?

    DAMN! Acer! ARGH!
Just like I expected, they would use a "method" to cover this case.

Anyway, it seems someone successfully use my TWEAK to settle this problem.
Check it out on my TWEAK thread.

Anyway, I have took part in lucky draw on Acer Timeline Exhibition show. I hope I would take something from them. XD sounds greedy but I want something back(anything) because this 6920G is disasterous!

DarkSilver, like I said, I'm DONE with this whole thing.
I'm going to let some other shlub with time on his hands figure it out.
(and besides, I couldn't edit a BIOS if I tried)

you might want to edit DSDT which is responsible for Temperature and Fan Control of Laptops in Vista.
Using modding DSDT I was able to make the fan continue running at 45 degs where it normally should turn off.
Unfortunately my laptop don't throttle so I won't be doing it for you.

There is also a new BIOS update no sure if you guys will want to try it.

I've restored my Vista power plan to default settings and also Acer's ePower Management thing. I adjusted settings for standby and stuff. I remember that using the old graphic drivers from Acer's website allowed the ePower Management to adjust the graphics' power output but with Nvidia's new ones (183.06) there's no longer an option for graphics, only CPU.

I recommend trying this since it's been working for the past 2 days so far, I've been keeping an eye on CPU-Z and GPU-Z every hour or so when playing Age of Conan. Temperature hits 55C but no throttling yet. FPS has risen from 10 to 40!

Turn powermizer off wih powermizer switch, makes me laugh how many people are trying to stop there throttling and hardly anybody knows about powermizer downclocking the gpu. i never get throttling or lag or drop in fps anymore with this method

No the issue the 6920G people are facing is the dropping of CPU States randomly when not even hitting the thermal threshold.
As you know in a game both CPU and GPU are put to the test but somehow the lousy Acer firmware is crippling the cpu even when not required.

And I quote myself from here:
But if it works for you, Angelwings, good! There is no real one-size-fits-all solution.

    Not running XP, no clue.
Nor do I have any desire to monkey around with my DSDT - undervolting works for me.

    Hi!

You can make it throttle using FurMark and Orthos side by side in less than 2-3 minutes with stock voltages.

My brother bought Acer Aspire 6920G a year and a half ago and started noticing throttling issue few months ago. Undervolting didn't help, but I did notice that it will throttle only using combined Furmrk and Orthos. On the other hand, I can't observe if throttling starts with Orthos alone because I had to return notebook back so I didn’t ran full stability test.

Anyway, I hope you can pinpoint the exact temperature when throttling actually starts.

Hi Darkling, and welcome to the forums!
Please refrain from bumping old topics in the future, however; this thing's been dead since January.
And it's been completely superceded by the Definitive Guide here, which includes software that stops throttling outright.
    Closing thread.
