I am interested in getting an Acer laptop. Probably the 290 series. I was wondering how I can customize it (like the processor, HDD, ram, etc). I have been to the acer site, and all of the online dealers sites that are acer resellers, and I have not seen any options to customize them.

P.S. If they are not customizable, what is the HDD rpm speed of the 290 series notebook, and how fast is the DVD burner?

    Thanks!

It has been over a day and there are no replies.

I am looking at the 290 series, the 2500 series, and the 660 series. I like the 2500, but the battery life is only two hours. Does it have a modular bay to exchange the optical drive for another battery?

    Are these good quality systems?

    Thanks!

Acer is a well respected bran internationally, it's just small here in the US. As far as I can tell they don't offer customization, although they do offer a ton of models within a family. When not stated, assume the slowest, so a 4200 drive a 4x DVD.

    >Run1track, too bad... Unless if you are in Taiwan (HQ,Research Center, factories) or China (50% of the factory - including assemble), you might be able to customize your Acer through the local authroize dealers.

For now, you might have to settle with Gateway or Dell for customization elsewhere in the world [B)]

    Hey,

I just got a TravelMate 291LCi. It's pretty standard, as far as hardware configuration goes. Just ask your retailer for customized units. They might offer you memory upgrades. Don't know about HDDs and CPUs though..
Anyways, my 291LCi works like a charm.

By the way, my unit has a Seagate ST94011A HDD. From what I can tell, it's a 5400RPM HDD.. Google it if you want to find out more about it.
I hope it helps.. Good luck in buying the laptop!

    Thanks for the replies.
My concern with the 291 is that it is not fast enough. It only has a 1.3/1.4 pentium M (I know it equals 2.1 P4 or so).

    Mihai does yours seem fast?

Can anyone comment on the travelmate 2500 or the aspire 2003?

    Thanks![ :)]

    Run1track, the 291LCi features 1.4GHz Pentium M and 512MB of DDR RAM..

Actually, you can even read a review of this unit on zdnet. And it is quite recent (two months old).

My first thoughts on the 291LCi are positive. [ :)]
The laptop is fast enough for me. I am most doing office work, running a movie or two from time to time.. just basic stuff, as many would say. I have run a couple of games too.. the ones that got in my hands.. NFS Porsche and Half-Life/CS. Running on native resolution (1024*768) doesn't put any problem to the Pentium M or even to the onboard Intel graphic card; actually the games run very smooth comparing with my 2.4GHz Pentium4 desktop w/ 1GB of Dual-Channel DDR RAM.
The battery lasted on me about three and a half hours with video playback, burning CDs and doing some other tasks. It can get even better, if you resume to basic tasks..

I bought it on a deal. Initially my eyes were set on the IBM ThinkPad T40/41, but since it was made in China, I avoided buying it so I went with the Acer. Anyways, it is a great deal and its got a great value for the money.
I don't know if the 1.5/1.6GHz Pentium M would make such a difference from the 1.4GHz Pentium M, but the latter runs pretty fast (remember, I also have a desktop powered by 2.4GHz Pentium4 and Dual-Channel)..
The only thing I must get used to is going from 1GB of RAM to only 512MB, and also from the 7200RPM desktop HDD to the 5400 one on the 291LCi. [ :)] On a serious note, the Acer is fast; it compares with my desktop in many areas. I don't do gaming, so other tasks are on top of my list. If you do not want to spend too much on a (Centrino) laptop, go with the 291LCi. ItÂ’s a great deal for the money.
The only thing I really miss at it is the Bluetooth module some other setups have..
