I have an Aspire 5050 and recently small problems have been cropping up. My OS is XP.

 The computer will not shut off except by holding the on/off down until it terminates. This always prompts a disc check when re-booted.

:confused2: The disc defrag will not work.

 The system will not allow Adobe Flash to operate. I have deleted and reloaded Flash several times.

I am considering backing up everything but the OS to an external drive and reformatting. This would also allow me to eradicate the C: D: partition.

    Any sage advise.

do the back but then try a simple factory restore. have you burnt the recovery DVD's ? this is the other option, as from these you can do a repair..
i would put all the stuff you want to keep on the D: partition.
then do the restore, as D: is not touched by a restore.

make sure you still have the PQService partition and the D2D recovery is on in the bios.

Sounds like some files have been deleted and your machine is unable to store settings before shut-down. this used to be a problem with windows 98se.

    good luck
    Phil :D

Thanks Hoggie...I performed the factory restore and that took care of the shut down problem. Once I did that, I found an old version of Flash Player (9) and did an upgrade to 10 vice a new install. The defrag still won't work so tomorrow I will do an XP repair from the OEM discs.

The source of the problems was a registry cleaner/organizer. It would clean the registry if the line had not been used in a certain time period...I uninstalled the registry cleaner/organizer.

I was stupid and only backed up the data not the system...I have learned. Once I perform the XP repair and all systems are good, I will move all data to the ext HD and back up a clean system.

Thanks again and if you ever are in Thailand, drop me a line bkeyston at yahoo dot com...I will buy you a cold one!
